Oxygen consumption rates of the deep-sea fish Sebastolobus altivelis were measured in situ on pelagic juveniles at mesopelagic depths (608 m) and on demersal adults at bathyal depths (1 300 m) in the Santa Catalina Basin in March 1982. Two pelagic juveniles were individually collected, and respiration was measured continuously for approximately 2 d with a slurp gun respirometer manipulated from the submersible “Alvin”. Oxygen consumption rates of these juveniles were highly variable and were 1.5 to 1.8 times higher during the night than during the day. Gut contents of the juveniles were mainly euphausiids (Euphausia pacifica and Nematoscelis difficilis). Four demersal adults were collected by “Alvin” and individually placed in fish-trap respirometers on the bottom where respiration was measured continuously for approximately 1 d. Weight-specific O2 consumption rates for adults decreased with increasing body weight and were consistent in magnitude throughout the incubation period. Population O2 consumption for demersal S. altivelis (calculated from abundance, size-frequency distribution, and O2 consumption regression equation) was 11.01 μl O2 m-2 h-1, which is two orders of magnitude less than the O2 consumption rate for the population of the most abundant epibenthic megafaunal species in the Santa Catalina Basin, the ophiuroid Ophiophthalmus normani. O. normani is a principal prey for adults of S. altivelis based on gutcontent analysis. Given the population O2 consumption rate as an estimate of food energy demand, the demersal population of S. altivelis would assimilate only 0.007% of the standing crop of O. normani per day.  相似文献

Summary On Skokholm Island, Wales, the young of the Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) are fully precocial, yet are totally dependent on parents for food. Though all young (commonly three) usually hatch within one day, small hatching intervals do exist, and first-hatched nestlings are usually slightly heavier at hatching than those hatched later. Firsthatched young and/or initially heavier young become socially dominant over their siblings; a stable, linear, non-aggressive social hierarchy among siblings develops, which determines the partition of food among them and results in unequal distribution when food is scarce. Food shortage impairs the growth rate of subordinate young. They are rather hungry and restless and consequently predation on them is higher than on dominant young.It is proposed that Oystercatchers achieve effective brood-reduction by the parents' control of differential egg weight, by the eggs' hatching order, and by the young's acceptance of a non-aggressive social hierarchy. The latter is an adaptation associated with the unusual phenomenon of fully precocial wader young being exclusively fed by parents.  相似文献

The gonad index in the deposit-feeding asteroid Ctenodiscus crispatus (Retzius) in the Gulf of Maine (USA) is seasonally less variable than in any other sea star, ranging from 2.99 to 4.98% of dry body weight in females and from 2.28 to 3.42% in males, and varies in concert with, rather than reciprocal to, the pyloric caecum index. Biochemical composition and, hence, caloric content, of the gonads also show little seasonal change, suggesting that reproduction is aseasonal and continuous in this population. Oocyte development is asynchronous, all females having a full size range of oocytes (from less than 30 m to greater than 400 m diameter) throughout the year. Seasonally determined size-frequency distributions of juveniles, oocyte cytology and size-frequency distributions, responsiveness of adult females to 1-methyladenine, and oxygen uptake rates indicate that variations in reproductive intensity are superimposed on continuous reproduction, and seem related to changes in phytoplankton production rather than to temperature. The rich neutral lipid content (ca. 50% of total lipid) and large egg size (>400 m) in the ovaries suggest that development is direct. The population is extremely variable genetically, polymorphism among 13 enzyme-coding genes being 77% and average heterozygosity being 0.174. The reproductive pattern and genetic variation in the eurybathic C. crispatus are similar to those in deep-sea echinoderms. This may be related to the constancy of the population's detrital food source, to small-scale heterogeneity of its physical environment, and to low individual vagility.  相似文献

Latitudinally separate populations of the sea anemone Metridium senile (L.) are very similar genetically by electrophoretic criteria, yet respond differently to temperature. Anemones from southern and northern California (USA) have different oxygen consumption patterns in response to acclimatory and acute changes in temperature. Northern anemones show a pronounced increase in Q10 at temperatures just above the normal environmental range, but southern anemones do not. The two populations also differed in the extent of metabolic compensation to temperature following several weeks of acclimation. This acclimation regime resulted in changes in the activities of several enzymes of intermediary metabolism, yet the extent and direction of these changes did not display a consistent trend with regard to acclimation temperature or population. The biochemical concomitants of acclimatory and acute temperature effects were studied further by measuring the concentrations of adenylates (ATP, ADP, and AMP) in anemones from the two populations exposed to different temperature regimes. During cold acclimation for several weeks, total adenylate concentrations (AT) increased in both the southern and northern populations, possibly due to metabolic rate compensation, since AT is positively correlated with tissue metabolic rate in many species. Moreover, the extremely low weight-specific oxygen consumption rates of M. senile are probably related to its very low AT values. Acute temperature decreases had no effect on adenylate concentrations and adenylate energy charge (AEC); in contrast, acute temperature increases led to large changes in adenylate concentrations. The effects of starvation on adenylate concentrations are pronounced, and the effect is temperature-dependent. In starved individuals held at 20°C, AEC values fell to 50% of normal values after 8 d, while those held at 10°C maintained normal AEC values.  相似文献

Glycera dibranchiata Ehlers and G. americana Leidy are two closely related and similar species of polychaetes. Electrophoretic studies of 11 enzyme systems encoded by 15 loci reveal that both species are polymorphic at about 50% of their enzyme loci, but that G. dibranchiata is the more variable as judged by heterozygosity per individual, genetic diversity, and effective number of alleles per locus. Both species show marked heterozygote deficiencies at nearly all polymorphic loci, possibly as the result of life-history features. Genetic similarity between the Glycera species suggests divergence at a level between species and sibling species compared to the Drosophila willistoni complex.  相似文献

Thirty-six samples of benthic algae were collected from the continental shelf along the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The algae contain 82.8±143 ppm aliphatic hydrocarbons by dry weight and 11.8±22.7 ppm aromatic and polyolefinic hydrocarbons. The aliphatic constituents of red algae are composed almost entirely of n-C17 (70 to 95% of aliphatic weight); green algae have varying amounts of n-alkanes in the range of n-C15 to n-C19, with homologous series of odd carbon number n-alkenes. Phytadienes occur as high as 740 ppm dry weight in the green algae and do not appear to be related to time or place of collection or to presence of any petroleum pollutants. The single brown algal species contains predominantly n-C15. About 30% of the samples have hydrocarbons resembling degraded petroleum residues, but no petroleum pollution of recent origin was detected in any specimen.  相似文献

Summary Foraging by a social wren, Campylorhynchus nuchalis (Troglodytidae), in a tropical savanna habitat is not enhanced by aggregation. Data for marked individuals show that solitary foraging results in a higher capture rate than foraging near others. We find no evidence of imitative foraging, as individuals actively avoid successful foragers following a capture and successful foragers do not restrict their search to recently productive stations or techniques. Captures are seldom temporally clumped, and clumping is probably not pronounced enough to favor imitation. Juveniles show no greater tendency to respond to captures of others, or to succeed in foraging in a group, than do adults. Aggregation is probably disadvantageous for foraging because of dispersed, scarce, cryptic, and noneruptive prey and because of the searching technique of these foliage-gleaning insectivores. If predator avoidance is enhanced by aggregation, it does not result in either increased survival or increased foraging efficiency in large groups, even by juveniles.  相似文献

Eighteen species of marine phytoplankton from 9 algal classes were tested under axenic-culture conditions for their capacity to improve phototrophic-growth performance on glycine with increasing concentration of this amino-acid serving as sole nitrogen source. Whereas all these species showed poor-to-no growth on 0.5 mM glycine, 14 species manifested considerable gain in growth-rate and yield at higher concentration levels. The highest level tested (25 mM) was generally not inhibitory and produced the best yields in these cases. Some species (notably Skeletonema costatum) showed marked reduction in the adaptation-lag period with increased glycine concentration, but Chlamydomonas palla required a very long adaptation period, which was little affected by concentration. Dunaliella tertiolecta, Emiliania huxleyi and Chroomonas salina showed sharp (albeit elevated) concentration thresholds for efficient glycine utilization. Rhodomonas lens and two cyanophycean strains, Agmenellum quadruplicatum and Anacystis marina, appeared incapable of successful growth on glycine at all concentrations tested, while the rhodophyte Porphyridium marinum displayed marginal growth. The results were insufficient to draw taxonomically general conclusions on algal-class potential for glycine utilization, but they showed unequivocally that more than 83% of phytoplankton species from 9 algal classes can utilize glycine for growth if the appropriate substrate concentration is provided.  相似文献

An oceanographic transet,, extending from Yugoslavia across the Northern Adriatic Sea to the Po delta in Italy, was occupied during 1972 and 1973 to establish the effect of Po river discharge on the phytoplankton communities of the region. Density distribution showed distinct seasonal features: a winter-spring period of low stability throughout the water column, and a summer period of stratification. The total water-column plant nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, silicate) showed a 1.3 to 4.5-fold decrease eastward, with semi-eutrophic conditions restricted to an area off the Po delta. Nannoplankton usually dominated the phytoplankton community, in terms of cell density, surface chlorophyll a concentrations, and surface primary production rates. However, all significant maxima in these characteristics resulted from increases in the microplankton component. Changes in the frequency of major microplankton groups characterized three periods of the annual cycle: September–December, neritic, temperate diatom flora with some littoral elements (e.g. Nitzschia seriata); January–May, neritic, temperate diatom flora of different composition (e.g. Lauderia borealis, Skeletonema costatum); May–August, dinoflagellates (e.g. Prorocentrum micans) at western stations and dinoflagellates plus neritic, warm-water diatoms at eastern stations. The seasonal cycle was characterized by spring and fall maxima tending to coincide with maximum Po river discharge and/or periods of low water-column stability and vertical mixing. The higher nutrient input at western stations was correlated with the co-dominance of only a few species of microplankton during bloom periods, suggesting that these species (S. costatum, N. seriata, and 5 others) can serve as indicators of eutrophic conditions in this region. Assimilation ratios of both the micro- and nannoplankton suggested borderline nutrient conditions. Phosphate was implicated as the limiting nutrient.  相似文献

The major pigment of a marine micro-organism was identified as prodigiosin on the basis of analytical and spectral data. Two minor pigments were tentatively assigned structures, from thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and mass spectral data, as prodigiosin homologs with 3-n-hexyl and 3-n-heptyl side-chains. The micro-organism was classified as a new Pseudomonas species on the basis of its morphological and biochemical characteristics. It was named Pseudomonas magnesiorubra (ATCC No. 21856).  相似文献
