Ocean acidification, or the lowering of seawater pH, is caused by sequestration of atmospheric CO2 into the oceans. This study investigated the effects of present-day pH 8.0, predicted ocean surface pH for the years 2100 and 2300 (pH 7.7 and pH 7.3, respectively) and an extreme pH (pH 7.0) on fertilisation and embryogenesis in the Antarctic nemertean worm Parborlasia corrugatus and sea urchin Sterechinus neumayeri. Fertilisation success was not affected by pH in P. corrugatus across a range of sperm concentrations. Fertilisation success in S. neumayeri declined significantly in pH 7.0 and 7.3 seawater, but only at a low sperm concentration. Seawater pH had no effect on the rate of egg cleavage in S. neumayeri, or the proportion of abnormal embryos 1-day post-fertilisation. P. corrugatus embryogenesis was also relatively robust to pH changes, with a significant effect detected only when the seawater pH was decreased to 7.0. While fertilisation and early cell division were relatively robust, later development through to the gastrula was sensitive to pH. In S. neumayeri, an effect of pH on development was evident by the gastrula stage, while there were significantly more abnormal P. corrugatus embryos in pH 7.0 up to the blastula stage, and in pH 7.0 and pH 7.3 at the coeloblastula stage. Our results are similar to the observations on other marine invertebrate species where fertilisation and early embryonic development are generally robust to lowered seawater pH, while the older coeloblastula and gastrula stages are more responsive. We also found no evidence to suggest that Antarctic species are more adversely affected by lower seawater pH compared with the findings for non-Antarctic counterparts. We conclude that in the two species we examined, near-future decreases in pH (decreases of ≈0.3–0.5 pH units) may not have a significant effect on fertilisation and early embryogenesis, while predicted longer term decreases (decreases of ≈0.7–0.77 pH units) could reduce fertilisation success in S. neumayeri if sperm concentrations are low and may increase abnormalities in P. corrugatus during later embryogenesis.  相似文献

The mating plug in Drosophila hibisci Bock is a firm, gelatinous structure that forms within the female’s uterus during copulation. Two non-mutually exclusive hypotheses for the function of the plug were evaluated. The plug may serve as a nutritional gift that females digest, using the constituents for somatic maintenance or to provision eggs as they mature within the ovaries. Alternatively, the plug may act as a chastity enforcement device by preventing subsequent copulations, and thereby reducing sperm competition. Plug size did not decrease within females over a period of 2 days, and dietary treatment in females did not affect plug size. The extent of ovarian provisioning was also not related to plug size. These results weaken the nutritional gift hypothesis. In contrast, the probability of a second copulation increased sharply with an experimental decrease in plug size. Moreover, females with plugs experimentally reduced in size were courted significantly more and mated significantly faster than females with larger plugs. These results support the chastity enforcement hypothesis. The plug retains the ejaculate and concentrates sperm at the anterior end of the uterus near the apertures of the sperm storage organs. The presence of the plug thus probably facilitates the movement of sperm into storage by retaining sperm at the anterior end of the uterus near the apertures of the sperm storage organs, which may be especially important for D. hibisci, in which sperm length is nearly twofold greater than ventral receptacle length. Matings with newly eclosed virgin females were significantly shorter than with older virgins, and copulations with the younger virgins ended more often without any sperm having yet entered into storage. The effectiveness of the plug in safeguarding a male’s ejaculate may have favoured the evolution of shortened copula durations with young virgins. One fitness advantage of shortened copula duration could be time liberated for the pursuit of further mating opportunities. Statistical thinking in wildlife biology and ecology has been profoundly influenced by the introduction of AIC (Akaike's information criterion) as a tool for model selection and as a basis for model averaging. In this paper, we advocate the Bayesian paradigm as a broader framework for multimodel inference, one in which model averaging and model selection are naturally linked, and in which the performance of AIC-based tools is naturally evaluated. Prior model weights implicitly associated with the use of AIC are seen to highly favor complex models: in some cases, all but the most highly parameterized models in the model set are virtually ignored a priori. We suggest the usefulness of the weighted BIC (Bayesian information criterion) as a computationally simple alternative to AIC, based on explicit selection of prior model probabilities rather than acceptance of default priors associated with AIC. We note, however, that both procedures are only approximate to the use of exact Bayes factors. We discuss and illustrate technical difficulties associated with Bayes factors, and suggest approaches to avoiding these difficulties in the context of model selection for a logistic regression. Our example highlights the predisposition of AIC weighting to favor complex models and suggests a need for caution in using the BIC for computing approximate posterior model weights.  相似文献

A radiotracer study was conducted in a creosote-contaminated aquifer beneath the Fraser River, British Columbia Canada to investigate the in situ degradation of naphthalene. The groundwater is anaerobic, with abundant methane, ferrous iron and carbon dioxide. This study followed earlier work at the site where the contaminant distribution could only be explained by invoking a mass loss through degradation, even though extensive field and laboratory microcosm studies closer to the source zone onshore could not confirm degradation. Accordingly, 14C-naphthalene was injected into the aquifer offshore, further from the source zone where modeling suggested degradation was occurring. During the 230-day monitoring period, 14CO2 was detected, confirming the degradation of the radio-labeled naphthalene tracer. A zero-order degradation rate of naphthalene of 5 microg/L-day was estimated based on the decrease in 14C-naphthalene concentration with time. While the degradation pathway could not be determined from the radiotracer study alone, the geochemistry of the site suggests that either iron reduction or methanogenesis is the terminal electron accepting processes responsible for naphthalene oxidation.  相似文献

This article evaluates the performance of a protocol to monitor riparian forests in western Oregon, United States based on thequality of the data obtained from a field survey. Precision isthe criteria used to determine the quality of 19 field and 6 derived metrics. The derived metrics were calculated from thefield data. The survey consisted of 110 riparian sites on publicand private lands that were sampled during the summers of 1996 and 1997. In order to calculate metric precision, some of the field plots were re-measured. Metric precision was defined in terms of the coefficient of variability (CV) and standard deviation and then compared with a pre-defined data quality objective (DQO). A metric was considered precise if the CV met or exceeded the DQO. The geomorphology metrics were not precisewhile the forest stand inventory metrics and forest cover metrics, with some exceptions, were precise. The precision formany of the field and derived metrics compared favorably withthe level of precision for similar metrics reported in the literature. Recommendations are made to improve the precision for some metrics and they include changing the way precision is calculated, re-defining the field protocol, or improving field training.  相似文献

Outotec open cycle (OOC) is a new low-energy process linking together production of hydrogen and sulfuric acid. While sulfuric acid is the world’s most widely produced chemical by mass at approximately 200 Mt/a, the OOC gives the potential for making 4 Mt/a of hydrogen gas as a by-product. H2SO4 manufacture requires a source of sulfur dioxide. 30% of world production of H2SO4 is from the SO2 by-product of pyrometallurgical processing of sulfur containing concentrates of metals such as copper, nickel and zinc. SO2 can also be made by direct combustion of sulfur. In OOC, a divided electrochemical cell is used for SO2-depolarized electrolysis of water. SO2 is fed to the anolyte and converted to H2SO4, while hydrogen gas is produced at the cathode. On the industrial scale, the equipment will be in the form of a membrane electrolyzer assembly or stack. A case is described where the OOC would be connected to a pyrometallurgical plant smelting 1 Mt/a of nickel and copper concentrate, producing 1 Mt/a of H2SO4 and 20 kt/a of hydrogen.  相似文献

This paper concerns virtue-based ethical principles that bear upon agricultural uses of technologies, such as GM crops and CRISPR crops. It does three things. First, it argues for a new type of virtue ethics approach to such cases. Typical virtue ethics principles are vague and unspecific. These are sometimes useful, but we show how to supplement them with more specific virtue ethics principles that are useful to people working in specific applied domains, where morally relevant domain-specific conditions recur. We do this while still fulfilling the need for principles and associated practical reasoning to flexibly respect variation between cases. Second, with our more detailed approach we criticize and improve upon a commonly discussed principle about ecosystemic external goods that are crucial for human flourishing. We show this principle is far more conservative than appreciated, as it would prohibit many technology uses that are uncontroversially acceptable. We then replace this principle with two more specific ones. One identifies specific conditions in which ecosystem considerations are against a technology use, the other identifies favorable conditions. Third, we uncover a humility-based principle that operates within an influential “hubris argument” against uses of several biotechnologies in agriculture. These arguments lack a substantive theory of the nature of humility. We clarify such a theory, and then use it to replace the uncovered humility-based principle with our own more specific one that shifts focus from past moral failings, to current epistemic limits when deciding whether to support new technologies.  相似文献
