The immediacy of the need for pollution-free vehicles is investigated by projecting to 2010 vehicle emission densities for eight urban areas and measures of population exposure to pollution for four cities. Three degrees of emission control are applied. Application of 50% control to 1968 automobiles maintains emission densities below present levels for the next 20 years, but is less effective in reducing population exposure to pollution, in some cases only slowing the rate of growth. Application of 50% control in 1968 and 80% in 1973 fails to reduce emission densities below 50% of the present. Reduction below 50% will eventually require an essentially pollution-free vehicle in many areas.  相似文献

Abstract

Air quality monitoring was conducted at a rural site with a tower in the middle of California’s San Joaquin Valley (SJV) and at elevated sites in the foothills and mountains surrounding the SJV for the California Regional PM10/M2.5 Air Quality Study. Measurements at the surface and on a tower at 90 m were collected in Angiola, CA, from ecember 2000 through February 2001 and included hourly black carbon (BC), particle counts from optical particle counters, nitric oxide, ozone, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and direction. Boundary site measurements were made primarily using 24-hr integrated particulate matter (PM) samples. These measurements were used to understand the vertical variations of PM and PM precursors, the effect of stratification in the winter on concentrations and chemistry aloft and at the surface, and the impact of aloft-versus-surface transport on PM concentrations. Vertical variations of concentrations differed among individual species. The stratification may be important to atmospheric chemistry processes, particularly nighttime nitrate formation aloft, because NO2 appeared to be oxidized by ozone in the stratified aloft layer. Additionally, increases in accumulation-mode particle concentrations in the aloft layer during a fine PM (PM2.5) episode corresponded with increases in aloft nitrate, demonstrating the likelihood of an aloft nighttime nitrate formation mechanism. Evidence of local transport at the surface and regional transport aloft was found; transport processes also varied among the species. The distribution of BC appeared to be regional, and BC was often uniformly mixed vertically. Overall, the combination of time-resolved tower and surface measurements provided important insight into PM stratification, formation, and transport.  相似文献

Detailed field investigations and numerical modeling were conducted to evaluate transport and fate of chlorinated solvent contamination in a fractured sedimentary bedrock aquifer (sandstone/siltstone/mudstone) at a Superfund site in central New Jersey. Field investigations provided information on the fractured rock system hydrogeology, including hydraulic gradients, bulk hydraulic conductivity, fracture network, and rock matrix, and on depth discrete contaminant distribution in fractures (via groundwater sampling) and matrix (via detailed subsampling of continuous cores). The numerical modeling endeavor involved application of both an equivalent porous media (EPM) model for flow and a discrete fracture network (DFN) model for transport. This combination of complementary models, informed by appropriate field data, allowed a quantitative representation of the conceptual site model (CSM) to assess relative importance of various processes, and to examine efficacy of remedial alternatives. Modeling progressed in two stages: first a large‐scale (20 km x 25 km domain) 3‐D EPM flow model (MODFLOW) was used to evaluate the bulk groundwater flow system and contaminant transport pathways under historic and current aquifer stress conditions and current stresses. Then, results of the flow model informed a 2‐D DFN transport model (FRACTRAN) to evaluate transport along a 1,000‐m flowpath from the source represented as a 2‐D vertical cross‐section. The combined model results were used to interpret and estimate the current and potential future extent of rock matrix and aqueous‐phase contaminant conditions and evaluate remedial strategies. Results of this study show strong effects of matrix diffusion and other processes on attenuating the plume such that future impacts on downgradient well fields under the hydraulic stresses modeled should be negligible. Results also showed futility of source remediation efforts in the fractured rock, and supported a technical impracticability (TI) waiver for the site. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Abstract: The residents of Nassau County Long Island, New York receive all of their potable drinking water from the Upper Glacial, Jameco/Magothy (Magothy), North Shore, and Lloyd aquifers. As the population of Nassau County grew from 1930 to 1970, the demand on the ground‐water resources also grew. However, no one was looking at the potential impact of withdrawing up to 180 mgd (7.9 m3/s) by over 50 independent water purveyors. Some coastal community wells on the north and south shores of Nassau County were being impacted by saltwater intrusion. The New York State Legislature formed a commission to look into the water resources in 1972. The commission projected extensive population growth and a corresponding increase in pumping resulting in a projected 93.5 to 123 mgd (4.1 to 5.5 m3/s) deficit by 2000. In 1986, the New York Legislature passed legislation to strengthen the well permit program and also establish a moratorium on new withdrawals from the Lloyd aquifer to protect the coastal community’s only remaining supply of drinking water. Over 30 years has passed since the New York Legislature made these population and pumping projections and it is time to take a look at the accuracy of the projections that led to the moratorium. United States Census data shows that the population of Nassau County did not increase but decreased from 1970 to 2000. Records show that pumping in Nassau County was relatively stable fluctuating between 170 and 200 mgd (7.5 to 8.8 m3/s) from 1970 to 2004, well below the projection of 242 to 321 mgd (10.6 to 14.1 m3/s). Therefore, the population and water demand never grew to projected values and the projected threat to the coastal communities has diminished. With a stable population and water demand, its time to take a fresh look at proactive ground‐water resource management in Nassau County. One example of proactive ground‐water management that is being considered in New Jersey where conditions are similar uses a ground‐water flow model to balance ground water withdrawals, an interconnection model to match supply with demand using available interconnections, and a hydraulic model to balance flow in water mains. New Jersey also conducted an interconnection study to look into how systems with excess capacity could be used to balance withdrawals in stressed aquifer areas with withdrawals in unstressed areas. Using these proactive ground‐water management tools, ground‐water extraction could be balanced across Nassau County to mitigate potential impacts from saltwater intrusion and provide most water purveyors with a redundant supply that could be used during water emergencies.  相似文献

This article is the third in a series prepared to explain the Teller County growth management planning process. Once it was determined by local decision-makers that Teller County, Colorado, would pursue a policy of directed growth, concepts based on this policy were developed. These concepts presented visions and options for the future. Landscape plans then were developed for Teller County and the City of Woodland Park planning area so that these options could be visualized by local leaders and the public. The landscape plans were used as part of the ongoing citizen involvement process to inform the public about the options for growth management. To provide even more information, detailed designs were developed for specific areas in the county. From the landscape plan, public involvement effort, and detailed designs, specific implementation measures were identified, discussed, and adopted. These measures included guidelines for administration, so that county and city goals could be linked to the actual day-to-day management of development proposals. Paper 3 in a series of 3.  相似文献

The establishment and interrelationships of microorganisms with soil and plant processes during reclamation are greatly influenced by the composition of the planting medium and vegetation practices. While in some instances the parent material may be used as the vegetation medium, the practice of topsoiling, particularly the direct haul method, may be beneficial in introducing microorganisms and improving the quality of the plant growth medium of spoils that are chemically or physically less desirable than the native soils. The influence of different vegetation types on soil development on surface mines may be a reflection of physioiogical differences that affect microbial development in the rhizosphere. Such differences include levels of carbohydrate translocated to the root system and/or released into the surrounding soil; the plant's effectiveness as a mycorrhizal host; and the rate of degradation of plant residues. It has become apparent that microbial interactions are an important part of plant and soil processes in reclamation. While some of the microorganisms important in plant growth and soil development can be introduced readily by management practices, the majority usually are disseminated by natural means and only gradually become a part of the microbial population. More research is needed on developing new methods or refining current procedures for early introduction of these microorganisms in reclamation practices.  相似文献

We report three cases of amniocentesis in which mosaicism for trisomy 12 was detected in two or more independent cultures. The parents elected to terminate the pregnancy in all three cases. Follow-up studies in two of the cases confirmed the mosaicism in fetal tissues (in subcutaneous tissue in one case; in fetal lung in the other), but not in blood. No fetal anomalies were evident by ultrasound or at autopsy. These results along with other reported cases demonstrate the difficulty in counselling for mosaic trisomy 12.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted in male SD rats (225-250 g) to determine changes in the activities of endogenous antioxidants superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and concentrations of glutathione (GSH) in tissues after exposure to low doses of endosulfan and chlorpyrifos using a whole body exposure technique. In both experiments, 6 rats/group were exposed 3 hr/day, 5 days/week for 30 days to: 0 (control), 5, 10, 20, 40 and 60% of LD50 of either pesticide in 50% ethanol; actual concentrations were: endosulfan = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0 mg/250 g body weight; chlorpyrifos = 0, 1.9, 3.8, 7.6, 15.2, and 22.8 mg/250 g body weight. Endosulfan decreased erythrocyte SOD by 21% in all groups and chlorpyrifos increased SOD by 18% in groups 40 and 60. Liver SOD was 12%-20% lower after endosulfan exposure; lung SOD was altered: endosulfan decreased activity by 21% and 51% and chlorpyrifos by 58 and 75% in the 40 and 60 groups, respectively (P < or = 0.05). Both pesticides increased plasma GPX activity at lower levels and reduced it by 26% and 19% in groups 40 and 60, respectively (P < or = 0.05). Liver GPX increased in the 60 group and lung GPX declined between 20% and 38% after endosulfan exposure. GSH in the liver and lung: endosulfan reduced GSH by about 30% at lower levels and increased by 41% or 70% at higher levels; chlorpyrifos decreased GSH by 28-40% in 20 and 60 groups, respectively (P < or = 0.05). Exposure to low, increasing levels of endosulfan and chlorpyrifos can differentially modify endogenous antioxidants SOD, GPX and GSH, which may lead to the development of oxidative stress in some tissues.  相似文献

Analysis for tetra- through octachloro-PCDDs and PCDFs was completed for 46 tissue samples prepared from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Human Adipose Tissue Survey (NHATS). The samples were prepared as composites from over 900 specimens to represent the nine U.S. census divisions and three age groups (0–14, 15–44, and 45 plus years). The data demonstrate that PCDDs and PCDFs are prevalent in the general U.S. population and that differences exist with age.  相似文献
