Europe has a long history of human pressure on freshwater ecosystems. As pressure continues to grow and new threats emerge, there is an urgent need for conservation of freshwater biodiversity and its ecosystem services. However, whilst some taxonomic groups, mainly vertebrates, have received a disproportionate amount of attention and funds, other groups remain largely off the public and scientific radar. Freshwater mussels (Bivalvia, Unionida) are an alarming example of this conservation bias and here we point out six conceptual areas that need immediate and long-term attention: knowledge, threats, socioeconomics, conservation, governance and education. The proposed roadmap aims to advance research, policy and education by identifying the most pressing priorities for the short- and long-term conservation of freshwater mussels across Europe.  相似文献

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), surface active substances (SAS) and copper complexing capacity (CuCC) were studied in bulk precipitations collected periodically from 2003 to 2007 in the continental city of Croatia (Zagreb: n = 27) and in the city at the Adriatic coast (?ibenik: n = 38). DOC concentrations (Zagreb: 0.67–4.03 mgC/L with average concentration of 1.93 ± 0.76 mgC/L; ?ibenik: 0.44–4.13 mgC/L with average concentration of 1.83 ± 0.83 mgC/L) are similar to those measured in other samples of continental rainwater in the northern hemisphere. The concentrations of SAS in samples from Zagreb ranged from 0.055 to 0.45 eq. Triton-X-100 mg/L with average concentration of (0.14 ± 0.06) eq. Triton-X-100 mg/L. SAS fractions were of a similar range in ?ibenik (0.02–0.60 eq. Triton-X-100 mg/L) with an average concentration of 0.11 ± 0.06 eq. Triton-X-100 mg/L. However, the lowest values of SAS (between 0.02 and 0.04 eq. Triton-X-100 mg/L) were observed only in ?ibenik (27%). We have estimated that the higher pH values were responsible for lower surface activity of organic matter in bulk samples from ?ibenik. DOC may form complexes that control the transport and solubility of heavy metals in natural water. CuCC measured in ?ibenik in the range 0.066–1.4 μM Cu2+ was in general higher, compared to the one in Zagreb (0.010–0.586 μM Cu2+) which is the result of biogenically driven organic contribution to the precipitation, especially in the warmer period of the year.  相似文献

Goal, Scope and Background

Elevated concentrations of copper in the environment result in accumulation of the metal in plants and cause an increase in reactive oxidative species (ROS). The first response to elevated amounts of ROS is increased levels of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants that reduce oxidative stress. The aim of our study was to evaluate the early stages of antioxidative responses to the low copper concentrations usually present in moderately polluted environments. In addition, some other parameters were examined to evaluate the effect of copper on plants.

Methods

Duckweed (Lemna minor L.) was exposed to different concentrations of copper sulphate for up to 24 hours. Glutathione concentration and enzymatic activities of catalase, guaiacol peroxidase and glutathione reductase were measured spectrophotometrically. Additionally, delayed and prompt chlorophyll fluorescence was measured by luminometry and fluorometry, respectively. The accumulation of copper in plants exposed for 24 hours to various concentrations of copper sulphate was measured by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

Results

The treatment of plants with copper sulphate resulted in an immediate decrease of the glutathione pool, which was replenished after 24 hours at CuSO4 concentrations lower than 2 μM. Higher CuSO4 concentrations caused a decrease of reduced glutathione. The responses of the antioxidant enzymes glutathione reductase, guaiacol peroxidase and catalase to CuSO4 differed during the first six hours of exposure, but their enzyme activities all increased after 24 hours of exposure. All these enzymes displayed biphasic activity curves with maximum values between 0.5 μM and 1 μM CuSO4. The response of guaiacol peroxidase was the most pronounced and statistically significantly specific and that of catalase the least. Delayed chlorophyll fluorescence decreased after exposure to 1 μM CuSO4, but no significant effect on maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) was observed. L. minor accumulated relatively high concentrations of copper. The accumulation rate was higher at lower concentrations of copper in the test medium (up to 2 μM CuSO4) than at concentrations above 2 μM CuSO4.

Discussion

One of the most pronounced antioxidative responses to copper exposure was modified levels of oxidized and reduced forms of glutathione. The decrease of the glutathione pool is most probably coupled with induced production of phytochelatins. Antioxidative enzymes showed the biphasic enzyme activity characteristic of stress response. Guaiacol peroxidase exhibited the greatest significant increase of activity, even at higher CuSO4 concentrations at which the activity of catalase and glutathione reductase dropped. The intensity of delayed chlorophyll fluorescence decreased, indicating reduced photosynthesis of plants under stress. All the measured parameters showed that plants respond to even low copper concentrations very soon after exposure. The accumulation rate of copper in duckweed tissues indicates that L. minor is an accumulator species.

Conclusions

The synchronized and prompt inducibility of antioxidants indicates their involvement in a general plant defence strategy for coping with metal-induced oxidative stress. Glutathione concentration and guaiacol peroxidase activity were found to be the most sensitive of the early indicators of exposure to copper concentrations present in polluted water bodies.

Recommendation and Perspectives

The experimental design of the present study allowed us to compare the sensitivity of various methods and parameters for detecting plant responses to heavy metal-induced oxidative stress. The level of glutathione and the enzyme activities of guaiacol peroxidase and glutathione reductase could be used as a rapidly determined early warning system in toxicity studies.

In this study, the influence of anthropogenic pollution on the aquatic environment of Plitvice Lakes National Park (PLNP) was investigated during 2011–2012 using a combination of chemical and cytogenetic analyses. Four groups of major contaminants [(volatile organic compounds: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX); persistent organochlorine pollutants: organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs); major and trace elements; anthropogenic radionuclides (90Sr, 134Cs, and 137Cs)] were determined in three aquatic compartments (water, sediment, fish). Mass fractions of inorganic constituents in different compartments reflected the geological background of the area, indicating their origin from predominantly natural sources. Levels of volatile and persistent organic compounds in water and fish, respectively, were very low, at levels typical for remote pristine areas. Analysis of anthropogenic radionuclides in water and sediment revealed elevated activity concentrations of 137Cs in water, and measurable 134Cs in the upper sediment layers from April 2011, possibly as a consequence of the Fukushima nuclear accident in March 2011. The potential genotoxicity of river and lake water and lake sediment was assessed under laboratory conditions using the alkaline comet assay on human peripheral blood lymphocytes, and measured levels of primary DNA damage were within acceptable boundaries. The results showed that despite the protected status of the park, anthropogenic impact exists in both its terrestrial and aquatic components. Although contaminant levels were low, further monitoring is recommended to make sure that they will not rise and cause potentially hazardous anthropogenic impacts.  相似文献

Mercury is transported globally in the atmosphere mostly in gaseous elemental form (GEM, \( {\text{Hg}}_{\text{gas}}^{0} \) ), but still few worldwide studies taking into account different and contrasted environmental settings are available in a single publication. This work presents and discusses data from Argentina, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Chile, China, Croatia, Finland, Italy, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Slovenia and Venezuela. We classified the information in four groups: (1) mining districts where this contaminant poses or has posed a risk for human populations and/or ecosystems; (2) cities, where the concentration of atmospheric mercury could be higher than normal due to the burning of fossil fuels and industrial activities; (3) areas with natural emissions from volcanoes; and (4) pristine areas where no anthropogenic influence was apparent. All the surveys were performed using portable LUMEX RA-915 series atomic absorption spectrometers. The results for cities fall within a low GEM concentration range that rarely exceeds 30 ng m?3, that is, 6.6 times lower than the restrictive ATSDR threshold (200 ng m?3) for chronic exposure to this pollutant. We also observed this behavior in the former mercury mining districts, where few data were above 200 ng m?3. We noted that high concentrations of GEM are localized phenomena that fade away in short distances. However, this does not imply that they do not pose a risk for those working in close proximity to the source. This is the case of the artisanal gold miners that heat the Au–Hg amalgam to vaporize mercury. In this respect, while GEM can be truly regarded as a hazard, because of possible physical–chemical transformations into other species, it is only under these localized conditions, implying exposure to high GEM concentrations, which it becomes a direct risk for humans.  相似文献

Size segregated particulate samples of atmospheric aerosols in urban site of continental part of Balkans were collected during 6 months in 2008. Six stages impactor in the size ranges: Dp?≤?0.49 μm, 0.49?2?≈?30 %) followed by traffic (PC2, σ2?≈?20 %) that are together contributing around 50 % of elements in the investigated urban aerosol. The EF model shows that major origin of Cd, K, V, Ni, Cu, Pb, Zn, and As in the fine mode is from the anthropogenic sources while increase of their contents in the coarse particles indicates their deposition from the atmosphere and soil contamination. This approach is useful for the assessment of the local resuspension influence on element’s contents in the aerosol and also for the evaluation of the historical pollution of soil caused by deposition of metals from the atmosphere.  相似文献

In a plant cell wall, lignin is synthesized from several monomeric precursors, combined in various ratios. The variation in monomer type and quantity enables multifunctional role of lignin in plants. Thus, it is important to know how different combinations of lignin monomers impact variability of bond types and local structural changes in the polymer. Lignin model polymers are a good model system for studies of relation between variations of the starting monomers and structural variations within the polymer. We synthesized lignin model polymers from three monomers, CF??based on coniferyl alcohol and ferulic acid in monomer proportions 5:1 and 10:1 (w/w), CP??based on coniferyl alcohol and p-coumaric acid in proportion 10:1 (w/w) and CA??based on pure coniferyl alcohol. We studied structural modifications in the obtained polymers, by combining fluorescence microscopy and spectroscopy, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, in parallel with determination of polymers?? molecular mass distribution. The differences in the low M w region of the distribution curves of the 10:1 polymers in comparison with the CA polymer may be connected with the increased content of C=C bonds and decreased content of condensed structures, as observed in FT-IR spectra and indicated by the analysis of fluorescence spectra. The 5:1 CF polymer contains a different type of structure in comparison with the 10:1 CF polymers, reflected in its simpler M w distribution, higher homogeneity of the fluorescence emitting structures and in the appearance of a new high-wavelength emission component. We propose that this component may originate from ??-conjugated chains, which are longer in this polymer. The results are a contribution to the understanding of the involvement of structural variations of lignin polymers in the cell wall structural plasticity.  相似文献

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype 3 infections in pigs and humans have been lately reported in Europe. In the present study, the prevalence of anti-HEV IgG antibodies in swine was investigated, for the first time, in Serbia by means of an ELISA based on a recombinant open reading frame 2 protein of HEV genotype 3. A total of 315 serum samples from 3 to 4 months-old healthy backyard pigs, collected in 63 herds from 28 towns and villages of 4 different districts of the Vojvodina province, in the northern part of Serbia, were tested. A 34.6% (109/315) of the sera tested were positive. The prevalence of anti-HEV antibodies varied widely between municipalities (range 16.7–75.0%) and herds (range 0–100%). These data indicate that HEV infection is widespread in Serbian backyard pigs.  相似文献
