Oxygen uptake and ammonia excretion rates, and body carbon and nitrogen contents were measured in krill (Euphausia superba) and eight other zooplankton species collected during November–December 1982 in the Prydz Bay, Antarctica. From these data, metabolic O:N ratios (by atoms), body C:N ratios (by weight) and daily metabolic losses of body carbon and nitrogen were calculated as a basis from which to evaluate seasonal differences in metabolism and nutritional condition. Comparison of the present data with mid-summer (January) data revealed that early-summer E. superba were characterized by higher metabolic O:N ratios (58.7 to 103, compared with 15.9 to 17.5 for mid-summer individuals). Higher O:N ratios of early-summer E. superba resulted largely from reduced ammonia excretion rates and, to a lesser degree, from slightly increased oxygen uptake rates. Body C:N ratios of E. superba were low in early-summer (3.8 to 4.2) compared with mid-summer krill (4.1 to 4.7) due to lowered body-carbon contents in the former (42.6 to 43.6% compared with 43.2 to 47.5% dry weight of midsummer individuals); gravid females formed an exception, since no seasonal differences in body elemental composition were detected for these. No significant changes in water content (75.3 to 81.4% wet wt) and nitrogen content (9.9 to 11.1% dry wt) in E. superba were evident between the two seasons. Seasonal differences in metabolic rates and elemental composition were less pronounced in a salp (Salpa thompsoni), but a higher metabolic O:N ratio occurred in early-summer individuals. Interspecific comparison of the seven remaining zooplankton species studied with twelve species from mid-summer zooplankton investigated in an earlier study indicated that higher metabolic O:N ratios in early-summer are characteristic not only of herbivore/filter-feeders, but also of some carnivores/omnivores. No relationship between metabolic O:N ratios and body C:N ratios was apparent either intraspecifically or interspecifically, within or between early-summer and mid-summer seasons.  相似文献

Oxygen uptake, ammonia excretion and phosphate excretion were measured in 14 Antarctic zooplankton species, including various size classes of krill (Euphausia superba), during a cruise to the Antarctic Ocean adjacent to Wilkes Land in the summer of 1980. Elemental composition (C, N and P) was also determined on the specimens used in these metabolic rate measurements. The values obtained for C, N and P were 4.7 to 47.5%, 1.2 to 12.5% and 0.09 to 1.23% of dry weight, respectively. Regression analyses of metabolic rates on different measures of body weight (fresh, dry, C, N and P) were made on krill, salps and other zooplankton as arbitrarily defined groups and also on the combined groups to determine the best measure of body weight for intra- and interspecific comparison of metabolic rates. The correlations were highly significant in all regressions, although no common measure of body weight provided the best correlation for the three groups of animals. Except for the regression of ammonia excretion on C and N weight, all other regressions of metabolic rates and body weights were significantly different within these three groups. In the combined group, oxygen uptake and ammonia excretion were better correlated to C and N weights than to dry and P weights. For phosphate excretion in the combined groups, dry weight gave the best correlation. Despite these results, the choice of a particular measure of body weight was shown to be important in a comparison of the rates between krill and salps because of their widely different chemical compositions. Our results of rate measurements are compared with those of previous workers for some Antarctic zooplankton, particularly krill. Some of the previous data are in good agreement with ours, while others are not. Possible contributing factors are considered in the latter case. The ratios between the rates (O:N, N:P and O:P) fell within the general ranges reported for zooplankton from different seas. The O:N ratio was consistently low (7.0 to 19.8, by atoms) in all species, suggesting the importance of protein in their metabolic substrates. Protein-oriented metabolism was also supported by the results of C and N analyses which indicated no large deposition of lipid in these animals. From the results of metabolic rate measurements and elemental analyses, daily losses in bodily C, N and P for Antarctic zooplankton in summer were estimated as 0.4 to 2.8%, 0.6 to 2.5% and 1.3 to 19.4%, respectively. These values are approximately one order of magnitude lower than those reported for subtropical and tropical zooplankton.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: This paper provides a framework for analyzing flood fatalities and injuries, and it describes the derivation of a generalized flood risk (i.e., flood consequences and their probabilities) function by introducing an integrated index (the number of residential buildings affected by a flood) that represents the major change in the power relation among the flood intensity, regional vulnerability, and resilience. Both the probabilities and the numbers of fatalities and injuries clearly increase significantly after the flood severity (in terms of the number of inundated buildings) passes a branch point. Below the branch point, it is still possible for fatalities and injuries to occur because of the variability in the data and the uncertainty in the predicted fatality values. The empirical models of fatalities and injuries due to floods in Japan suggested the usefulness in predicting fatalities and injuries and evaluating the efficacy of the warning or other emergency response measures.  相似文献

Persistent organic pollutants have been shown to have immunomodulating effects in humans. However, epidemiological evidence regarding the relationships between organochlorine compound exposure and allergic disorders coming from studies of children has been limited and inconsistent. The current cross-sectional study examined the associations between the concentrations of β-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), and trans-nonachlordane in breast milk and the prevalence of allergic disorders in 124 adult Japanese women. The definition of wheeze and asthma was based on criteria from the European Community Respiratory Health Survey whereas that of eczema and rhinoconjunctivitis was based on criteria from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. Adjustment was made for age, smoking, family history of allergic disorders, and education. The prevalence values of wheeze, asthma, eczema, and rhinoconjunctivitis in the past 12 months were 9.7%, 4.8%, 13.7%, and 29.8%, respectively. The median concentrations of β-HCH, HCB, p,p'-DDE, and trans-nonachlordane in breast milk were 28.3, 7.0, 71.6, and 23.9 ng g(-1) lipid, respectively (range, 4.5-253, 2.1-14.5, 7.5-362, and 1.8-130 ng g(-1) lipid, respectively). When the exposures were treated as continuous variables, no significant associations were found between concentrations of HCB, β-HCH, p,p'-DDE, or trans-nonachlordane and the prevalence of wheeze, asthma, eczema, or rhinoconjunctivitis. Our results suggest that concentrations of β-HCH, HCB, p,p'-DDE, and trans-nonachlordane in breast milk are not evidently associated with the prevalence of wheeze, asthma, eczema, or rhinoconjunctivitis in young female Japanese adults.  相似文献

Geographic variations in the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequence (1,062 nucleotides) of the rocky intertidal goby Chaenogobius gulosus were examined and compared against the phylogeographic pattern of its sympatric sister species Chaenogobius annularis, which we studied previously. We collected C. gulosus specimens from 17 localities around the Japanese Archipelago and Korean Peninsula. Thirty-one haplotypes were obtained. The phylogenetic tree showed three geographical lineages, of which one was distributed along the coast of the Sea of Japan, suggesting that a Pleistocene isolation event in the Sea of Japan affected the genetic divergence of this species, similar to that which was observed in C. annularis. The net nucleotide divergence between the Sea of Japan and Pacific Ocean lineages in C. gulosus was much lower than that of C. annularis. Both traditional molecular clock and hierarchical approximate Bayesian computational models suggest that different divergence events affected the genetic divergences of C. gulosus and C. annularis. Our study on the sister species pair strongly supports multiple isolation events in the Sea of Japan, leading to varying levels of genetic divergence between the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Japan lineages in the Japanese coastal marine species.  相似文献

Organisms in natural habitats participate in complex ecological interactions that include competition, predation, and foraging. Under natural aquatic environmental conditions, amphibian larvae can simultaneously receive multiple signals from conspecifics, predators, and prey, implying that predator-induced morphological defenses can occur in prey and that prey-induced offensive morphological traits may develop in predators. Although multiple adaptive plasticity, such as inducible defenses and inducible offensive traits, can be expected to have not only ecological but also evolutionary implications, few empirical studies report on species having such plasticity. The broad-headed larval morph of Hynobius retardatus, which is induced by crowding with heterospecific anuran (Rana pirica) larvae, is a representative example of prey-induced polyphenism. The morph is one of two distinct morphs that have been identified in this species; the other is the typical morph. In this paper, we report that typical larval morphs of Hynobius can respond rapidly to a predatory environment and show conspicuous predator-induced plasticity of larval tail depth, but that broad-headed morphs cannot respond similarly to a predation threat. Our findings support the hypothesis that induction or maintenance of adaptive plasticity (e.g., predator-induced polyphenism) trades off against other adaptive plastic responses (e.g., prey-induced polyphenism). For a species to retain both an ability to forage for larger prey and an ability to more effectively resist predation makes sense in light of the range of environments that many salamander larvae experience in nature. Our results suggest that the salamander larvae clearly discriminate between cues from prey and those from predators and accurately respond to each cue; that is, they adjust their phenotype to the current environment.  相似文献

Live female Euphausia superba, Dana were collected from Prydz Bay, East Antarctica in January 1985, and observations of intermoult period, growth and maturation changes were made on individuals which spawned and were subsequently maintained in the laboratory for 12 mo. Over this experimental period an instrinsic cyclic reproductive pattern was observed. Following spawning, there was a regression of the female copulatory organ, the thelycum, coupled with a decrease in body length and an increase in the krill's mean intermoult period. This was followed by a period of sexual re-maturation, associated with positive growth and a decrease in the mean intermoult period. This study indicates multi-year spawning of E. superba and a life-span greater than 4 yr.  相似文献
