Objectives: The accuracy of self-reported driving exposure has questioned the validity of using self-reported mileage to inform research questions. Studies examining the accuracy of self-reported driving exposure compared to objective measures find low validity, with drivers overestimating and underestimating driving distance. The aims of the current study were to (1) examine the discrepancy between self-reported annual mileage and driving exposure the following year and (2) investigate whether these differences depended on age and annual mileage.
Methods: Two estimates of drivers’ self-reported annual mileage collected during vehicle installation (obtained via prestudy questionnaires) and approximated annual mileage driven (based upon Global Positioning System data) were acquired from 3,323 participants who participated in the Strategic Highway Research Program 2 (SHRP2) Naturalistic Driving Study.
Results: A Wilcoxon signed rank test showed that there was a significant difference between self-reported and annual driving exposure during participation in SHRP 2, with the majority of self-reported responses overestimating annual mileage the following year, irrespective of whether an ordinal or ratio variable was examined. Over 15% of participants provided self-reported responses with over 100% deviation, which were exclusive to participants underestimating annual mileage. Further, deviations in reporting differed between participants who had low, medium, and high exposure, as well as between participants in different age groups.
Conclusions: These findings indicate that although self-reported annual mileage is heavily relied on for research, such estimates of driving distance may be an overestimate of current or future mileage and can influence the validity of prior research that has utilized estimates of driving exposure. 相似文献
Pikeperch Sander lucioperca (L.) were tagged in an area where ten small independent management units regulate fisheries, in order to analyze the relevance of migrations for the management. A total of 465 fishes were tagged in connection with the spawning migration. The number of recaptures was 96. The distribution of recaptures between areas and that of total catches, estimated from questionnaire to housholds and, individuals in the survey area, were correlated. The comparison of tagging and recapture dates showed that the same pikeperch migrated to the spawning areas at the same time in two subsequent years, indicating the existence of individual spawning behavior. A modified yield/recruit-model demonstrated that in situations where the dispersal area of a pikeperch stock overlaps with several management areas, the risk of overfishing is very high. Management of this kind of fisheries needs cooperation between units as well as sound data on the movements of pikeperch to define the effects of fishing regulations. 相似文献
Summary Nest defence responses of experimentally naive and revisited willow tits (Parus montanus) towards a predator model were studied near Oulu, northern Finland, in 1988–1989. Intensity was measured with three variables in 228 trials at 90 nests. Two hypotheses explaining the temporal changes in the nest defence behavior were examined. In naive birds the nest defence intensity was positively correlated with the brood age, supporting the parental investment hypothesis. The number of previous trials did not cause additional variation in nest defence behavior in comparison between naive and revisited birds. Similarly, experiences in a previous breeding attempt did not affect the nest defence behavior during the course of the subsequent brood. Thus, the temporal increase in multiply visited nests was not due to the birds becoming familiar with the nest threat, i.e., no support was found for the so-called positive reinforcement hypothesis. We think that methodological problems in avian nest defence studies can hide the adaptive significance of the behavior, not explain it.

The OECD monitoring programmes 1966–1971 and 1972–1975 have been extended at national level in Finland to 1983 by analysing chlorinated hydrocarbons, mercury and chlorophenols in starlings (terrestrial environment). At the end of the study period levels in fresh muscles were for DDE 10, PCB 30, HCB 1, Lindan 8 and mercury 50 ppb. Of chlordane residues only traces of oxychlordane were found. Ten different chlorophenol compounds were detected at ppb levels, but most of them in only few samples. Pentachlorophenol was most frequently found. Statistical treatment of the analysis results gave some decreasing trends which were very significant for DDE, DDT and PCB 1967–1983, significant for mercury 1967–1983 and somewhat significant for lindane 1978–1983. 相似文献
Accurate predictions of 13C NMR chemical shifts (standard error approximately 1.7 ppm) are achieved for a subset of chlorinated bornanes by empirical scaling of shifts from GIAO calculations with geometries obtained from HF/6-31G* calculations. The optimized molecular geometries were compared with X-ray structures for three of the toxaphene components most frequently detected in environmental samples (Parlar nos. 26, 50 and 62), and the concordance between the experimental and calculated values was found to be satisfactory. Taken overall, the results indicate that theoretical methods hold great promise for rationalizing 13C NMR chemical shifts in organohalogen compounds. However, it appeared that the DFT/GIAO shifts need to be empirically scaled to achieve good numerical agreement with experimental shifts in chlorinated bornanes. Obviously, there is a need to develop new computational methods to describe the large deshielding effects of chlorine atoms properly. 相似文献
Thraustochytrid protists characteristically accumulate high amounts of lipids, much of which is comprised of the polyunsaturated
fatty acid, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Since DHA is important in human health, thraustochytrids have attracted much attention
from the point of view of biotechnology. However, the biological rationale of DHA production in the storage lipids of these
organisms is not clear. We carried out three experiments to study this. (1) The fate of lipids in thraustochytrids during
development was studied by staining lipids of vegetative cells with the fluorescent vital stain for lipids, namely Nile blue,
following the growth of the cells. The fluorescent lipid bodies decreased in abundance in freshly formed motile limaciform
amoeboid cells and subsequently disappeared when they moved away. When vegetative cells produced vast extensions of plasma
membrane, the ectoplasmic net elements (EN), the fluorescent lipids appeared to be transported to them. (2) Changes in lipids
and DHA during starvation were examined in cells with enhanced lipid and DHA contents and those in which they were not enhanced.
Cells in which lipids and DHA were enhanced by refrigerating them for 48 h survived starvation for a longer period. Compared
to cells that had not been refrigerated, total fatty acids, as well as DHA were marginally higher in pre-refrigerated cells,
while palmitic acid levels were lower. Starvation of cells resulted in a gradual decrease of absolute concentrations and percentage
levels of DHA after 8 days, while percentage of palmitic acid levels increased. (3) The relationship between DHA and specific
gravity of cells was studied by comparing cells pre-refrigerated as above with those which were not pre-refrigerated. Refrigerated
cells with increased lipids and DHA showed higher specific gravities than non-refrigerated cells. We suggest the following
roles for storage lipids and DHA in thraustochytrids: (1) lipids serve as energy sources during movement of cells and for
production of EN; (2) DHA in storage lipids become distributed in the plasma membrane when EN are formed; (3) DHA is preferably
utilized as a fatty acid energy reserve during starvation and (4) an unknown mechanism results in negative buoyancy of cells
when total lipids and DHA are marginally enhanced. DHA in storage lipids might be crucial to the survival of thraustochytrid

Betula papyrifera trees were exposed to elevated concentrations of CO2 (1.4 × ambient), O3 (1.2 × ambient) or CO2 + O3 at the Aspen Free-air CO2 Enrichment Experiment. The treatment effects on leaf surface characteristics were studied after nine years of tree exposure. CO2 and O3 increased epidermal cell size and reduced epidermal cell density but leaf size was not altered. Stomatal density remained unaffected, but stomatal index increased under elevated CO2. Cuticular ridges and epicuticular wax crystallites were less evident under CO2 and CO2 + O3. The increase in amorphous deposits, particularly under CO2 + O3, was associated with the appearance of elongated plate crystallites in stomatal chambers. Increased proportions of alkyl esters resulted from increased esterification of fatty acids and alcohols under elevated CO2 + O3. The combination of elevated CO2 and O3 resulted in different responses than expected under exposure to CO2 or O3 alone. 相似文献
In this study I evaluated the effects of complexing agents on the solubility of heavy metals in an incubation experiment up to 56 days when complexing agents were applied as Fe-chelates (Fe-EDDS(S,S), Fe-EDDS(mix), Fe-EDTA and Fe-EDDHA) on calcareous soils at a level sufficient to correct Fe chlorosis (0.1 mmol kg−1). Of these ligands, EDDHA was the most efficient in keeping Fe in water-soluble form, and EDDS increased the solubility of Cu and Zn most, and only EDTA increased the solubility of Cd and Pb. EDTA increased the solubility of Ni steadily during the incubation period, equalling about 5-8% of the added EDTA concentration. [S,S]-EDDS was biodegraded within 56 days, whereas EDDS(mix) was less biodegradable. Ni-chelates were the most recalcitrant against biodegradation. The study shows that even a moderate input of chelates to soil increases the solubility of toxic heavy metals and their risk of leaching. 相似文献
The importance of long-term environmental monitoring and research for detecting and understanding changes in ecosystems and human impacts on natural systems is widely acknowledged. Over the last decades, a number of critical components for successful long-term monitoring have been identified. One basic component is quality assurance/quality control protocols to ensure consistency and comparability of data. In Norway, the authorities require environmental monitoring of the impacts of the offshore petroleum industry on the Norwegian continental shelf, and in 1996, a large-scale regional environmental monitoring program was established. As a case study, we used a sub-set of data from this monitoring to explore concepts regarding best practices for long-term environmental monitoring. Specifically, we examined data from physical and chemical sediment samples and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages from 11 stations from six sampling occasions during the period 1996–2011. Despite the established quality assessment and quality control protocols for this monitoring program, we identified several data challenges, such as missing values and outliers, discrepancies in variable and station names, changes in procedures without calibration, and different taxonomic resolution. Furthermore, we show that the use of different laboratories over time makes it difficult to draw conclusions with regard to some of the observed changes. We offer recommendations to facilitate comparison of data over time. We also present a new procedure to handle different taxonomic resolution, so valuable historical data is not discarded. Interest in ecosystem services has grown tremendously among a wide range of sectors, including government agencies, NGO’s and the business community. Ecosystem services entailing freshwater (e.g. flood control, the provision of hydropower, and water supply), as well as carbon storage and sequestration, have received the greatest attention in both scientific and on-the-ground applications. Given the newness of the field and the variety of tools for predicting water-based services, it is difficult to know which tools to use for different questions. There are two types of freshwater-related tools – traditional hydrologic tools and newer ecosystem services tools. Here we review two of the most prominent tools of each type and their possible applications. In particular, we compare the data requirements, ease of use, questions addressed, and interpretability of results among the models. We discuss the strengths, challenges and most appropriate applications of the different models. Traditional hydrological tools provide more detail whereas ecosystem services tools tend to be more accessible to non-experts and can provide a good general picture of these ecosystem services. We also suggest gaps in the modeling toolbox that would provide the greatest advances by improving existing tools. 相似文献
