A 0.49-ha bioreactor landfill cell containing approximately 32,400 metric tons of municipal solid waste was constructed and operated at the Northern Oaks Recycling and Disposal Facility in Harrison, Michigan, USA. Design of this full-scale research cell included a network of 48 temperature and moisture sensors, leachate collection basins, and gas sampling ports, which provided for continuous temperature and moisture data and periodic measurements of both the quantity and composition of the leachate and gas produced. The data indicated that methane generation started approximately 3 months after filling in lifts that were placed during summer, but not until 8 months for those filled during the winter. Temperature data indicated that near-0 degrees C temperatures persisted within the lifts filled during winter for more than 6 months, and that gas production was minimal during this period. These results suggest that in addition to maintaining optimal moisture levels within the waste mass, temperature control must be a key design consideration in cold climates.  相似文献

This paper describes the measurement of total antimony and antimony species in "real world" mine contaminated sediments using ICPMS and HPLC-ICPMS. Low and high temperature microwave extraction procedures (90 degrees C and 150 degrees C, respectively) using a range of nitric-hydrochloric acid combinations were examined as to their efficacy to extract antimony from six mine contaminated soils and a certified reference material. The use of the higher temperature with nitric-hydrochloric acid (1:2 (v/v)) was suitable to release antimony from sediments and the certified reference material, NIST 2710 Montana soil. Antimony concentrations obtained using this acid mixture were similar to those obtained using a more aggressive extraction with nitric, hydrochloric, perchloric and hydrofluoric acid mixture. A 25 mM citric acid solution at 90 degrees C for 15 min extracted 47-78% of antimony from soils. A Hamilton PRP X-100 anion exchange column with 20 mM EDTA mobile phase, pH 4.5, flow rate 1.5 mL min(-1) and column temperature of 50 degrees C was used to separate antimony species. Column recoveries ranged from 78-104%. The predominant form of antimony was Sb(5+). Little conversion of Sb(5+) occurred (<5%) during extraction, however, significant conversion of Sb(3+) occurred (approximately 36%). The extraction of antimony species with citric acid should be useful in the determination of inorganic antimony available to plants, as plants commonly excrete carboxylic acids, including citric acid, into their rhizospheres to mobilise trace elements for nutritional purposes.  相似文献

An advanced image processing approach integrated with communication technologies and a camera for waste bin level detection has been presented. The proposed system is developed to address environmental concerns associated with waste bins and the variety of waste being disposed in them. A gray level aura matrix (GLAM) approach is proposed to extract the bin image texture. GLAM parameters, such as neighboring systems, are investigated to determine their optimal values. To evaluate the performance of the system, the extracted image is trained and tested using multi-layer perceptions (MLPs) and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) classifiers. The results have shown that the accuracy of bin level classification reach acceptable performance levels for class and grade classification with rates of 98.98% and 90.19% using the MLP classifier and 96.91% and 89.14% using the KNN classifier, respectively. The results demonstrated that the system performance is robust and can be applied to a variety of waste and waste bin level detection under various conditions.  相似文献

Sixty leading members of the scientific, engineering, regulatory, and legal communities assembled for the PFAS Experts Symposium in Arlington, Virginia on May 20 and 21, 2019 to discuss issues related to per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) based on the quickly evolving developments of PFAS regulations, chemistry and analytics, transport and fate concepts, toxicology, and remediation technologies.  The Symposium created a venue for experts with various specialized skills to provide opinions and trade perspectives on existing and new approaches to PFAS assessment and remediation in light of lessons learned managing other contaminants encountered over the past four decades. The following summarizes several consensus points developed as an outcome of the Symposium:
  • Regulatory and policy issues: The response by many states and the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to media exposure and public pressure related to PFAS contamination is to relatively quickly initiate programs to regulate PFAS sites. This includes the USEPA establishing relatively low lifetime health advisory levels for PFAS in drinking water and even more stringent guidance and standards in several states. In addition, if PFAS are designated as hazardous substances at the federal level, as proposed by several Congressional bills, there could be wide‐reaching effects including listing of new Superfund sites solely for PFAS, application of stringent state standards, additional characterization and remediation at existing sites, reopening of closed sites, and cost renegotiation among PRPs.
  • Chemistry and analytics: PFAS analysis is confounded by the lack of regulatory‐approved methods for most PFAS in water and all PFAS in solid media and air, interference with current water‐based analytical methods if samples contain high levels of suspended solids, and sample collection and analytical interference due to the presence of PFAS in common consumer products, sampling equipment, and laboratory materials.
  • Toxicology and risk: Uncertainties remain related to human health and ecological effects for most PFAS; however, regulatory standards and guidance are being established incorporating safety factors that result in part per trillion (ppt) cleanup objectives. Given the thousands of PFAS that may be present in the environment, a more appropriate paradigm may be to develop toxicity criteria for groups of PFAS rather than individual PFAS.
  • Transport and fate: The recalcitrance of many perfluoroalkyl compounds and the capability of some fluorotelomers to transform into perfluoroalkyl compounds complicate conceptual site models at many PFAS sites, particularly those involving complex mixtures, such as firefighting foams. Research is warranted to better understand the physicochemical properties and corresponding transport and fate of most PFAS, of branched and linear isomers of the same compounds, and of the interactions of PFAS with other co‐contaminants such as nonaqueous phase liquids. Many PFAS exhibit complex transport mechanisms, particularly at the air/water interface, and it is uncertain whether traditional transport principles apply to the ppt levels important to PFAS projects. Existing analytical methods are sufficient when combined with the many advances in site characterization techniques to move rapidly forward at selected sites to develop and test process‐based conceptual site models.
  • Existing remediation technologies and research: Current technologies largely focus on separation (sorption, ion exchange, or sequestration). Due to diversity in PFAS properties, effective treatment will likely require treatment trains. Monitored natural attenuation will not likely involve destructive reactions, but be driven by processes such as matrix diffusion, sorption, dispersion, and dilution.
The consensus message from the Symposium participants is that PFAS present far more complex challenges to the environmental community than prior contaminants. This is because, in contrast to chlorinated solvents, PFAS are severely complicated by their mobility, persistence, toxicological uncertainties, and technical obstacles to remediation—all under the backdrop of stringent regulatory and policy developments that vary by state and will be further driven by USEPA. Concern was expressed about the time, expense, and complexity required to remediate PFAS sites and whether the challenges of PFAS warrant alternative approaches to site cleanups, including the notion that adaptive management and technical impracticability waivers may be warranted at sites with expansive PFAS plumes. A paradigm shift towards receptor protection rather than broad scale groundwater/aquifer remediation may be appropriate.  相似文献

An extensive study on Se accumulation in a population of Anadara trapezia from a marine lake is reported. The effects of organism mass, gender, reproductive cycle, and season on Se accumulation and tissue distribution were investigated. Analyses showed that gender and reproductive cycle had no significant effect on Se accumulation. A. trapezia showed a strong positive correlation between Se burden and tissue mass. Constant Se concentrations were observed within individual populations but varied spatially with sediment Se concentrations. Se concentrations in tissues decreased from gills > gonad/intestine > mantle > muscle > foot, which remained constant over 12 months, however, significantly lower concentrations were observed in the summer compared to winter. A. trapezia is a good biomonitor for Se, as gender and size do not effect concentration, however, season of collection must be reported if changes in Se bioavailability are to be identified in short term studies, or during intersite comparisons.  相似文献

Summary. We tested the hypothesis that Daphne gnidium is an ancestral host plant of Lobesia botrana. To this end, we studied the oviposition response of this moth to various aerial organs of this plant. Our results show that females prefer to lay eggs on daphne berries rather than on grapes (cv. chasselas) and that polar surface extracts of daphne berries and leaves strongly stimulate oviposition in a dosedependant way, whereas flower extracts are weakly stimulant and branch extracts are inactive or deterrent for oviposition. Furthermore, a total extract of daphne berries stimulates oviposition in semi-natural conditions when applied onto fresh grapes. Oviposition stimulants from berries were isolated by HPLC coupled with a dual-choice oviposition bioassay. The ecological value of D. gnidium for L. botrana is discussed and the possible use of oviposition stimulants from daphne, contrasting with the oviposition signal of the cultivated host plant, is proposed in the perspective of developing behavioural manipulation methods such as stimulo-deterrent diversionary strategies compatible with IPM programs.  相似文献

Summary The behavior of male bison during the rut was studied, to test the prediction that reproductive effort should increase with age. Because bull bison do not show parental care, the major component of reproductive effort is competition with other bulls to obtain copulations with estrous females. Data were collected on activity budgets during the pre-rut and rut seasons, on interactions with other bulls, and on proximity to tended females during the rut. Participation in the rut started at ages 5–6. Older bulls showed greater percent time active and less percent time eating than younger bulls. The older bulls also had higher counts of dominance and fight-related interactions and lower counts for behavior associated with submission than did the younger bulls. Risk taken seemed to increase with age since bulls aged 6 to 12 participated more frequently in dangerous activities associated with fighting. Within the 6 to 12 year old group, activity patterns changed little with age. However, from the interaction information, peak ages of 8 to 11 years appeared. For the activities: back up, chase, clash, head nod, jump away, move away, run away, run toward, push heads, dominant, and risk, 11 and 12 year olds more closely resembled younger bulls. This suggests a reproductive effort curve that is flat at zero until about age 6, increases to age 8, flattens out again to around age 10, and then decreases somewhat. Reproductive effort in male bison thus generally conforms with life-history theory predictions.  相似文献
