Spentwash is a rich source of organic matter and essential plant nutrients in addition to excess salts. Sugar mills in Pakistan discharge about 3.48 million tons of spentwash annually, with no proper procedures for its disposal or utilization. To test the effect of diluted spentwash on soil and the soil’s ability to support plant growth, sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) variety CPF-237 was planted. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design involving factorial combination of four concentrations of each spentwash (0, 10, 20, and 30%) and mineral fertilizers (0, 1/3, 2/3, and the full recommended rate of NP). The 10% spentwash plus 2/3 mineral fertilizer treatment substituted 33% each of N and P and 100% of K, saving mineral fertilizer cost (Rs. 48600 ~ US$458) in addition to 29.54% increase in yield over full NP fertilizer. The same treatment also improved the soil organic matter (65%), N (20%), P (25%), and K (230%) over full NP treatment alone. Urban Heat Island (UHI) is considered as one of the major problems in the 21st century posed to human beings as a result of urbanization and industrialization of human civilization. The large amount of heat generated from urban structures, as they consume and re-radiate solar radiations, and from the anthropogenic heat sources are the main causes of UHI. The two heat sources increase the temperatures of an urban area as compared to its surroundings, which is known as Urban Heat Island Intensity (UHII). The problem is even worse in cities or metropolises with large population and extensive economic activities. The estimated three billion people living in the urban areas in the world are directly exposed to the problem, which will be increased significantly in the near future. Due to the severity of the problem, vast research effort has been dedicated and a wide range of literature is available for the subject. The literature available in this area includes the latest research approaches, concepts, methodologies, latest investigation tools and mitigation measures. This study was carded out to review and summarize this research area through an investigation of the most important feature of UHI. It was concluded that the heat re-radiated by the urban structures plays the most important role which should be investigated in details to study urban heating especially the UHI. It was also concluded that the future research should be focused on design and planning parameters for reducing the effects of urban heat island and ultimately living in a better environment. 相似文献

There is a growing recognition that knowledge of indigenous communities, based on accumulated observations and experience over time, is significant for sustainable environmental management in collaboration with modern scientific knowledge. A number of innovative policy initiatives are currently being implemented in New Zealand to enable indigenous Maori tribes and sub-tribes to rehabilitate and manage their local fisheries in accordance with customary values and practices. These policies are an important milestone from an historical perspective as they are meant to recognise and empower the role of Maori as Treaty partners. The fisheries management regime in New Zealand now provides for Maori representation at the local level within a co-management framework that enables local Maori communities to exercise their customary rights. These institutional arrangements have been crafted to facilitate Maori input, based on customary values and practices, to complement modern Western management practices for sustainable harvesting of marine resources. Nevertheless, the degree to which these initiatives constitute an adequate response to Maori Treaty aspirations is debatable. A major constraint in this respect is that the government is compelled to recognise the needs of other, economically and politically more dominant, non-Maori user-groups in allocating and managing access to fishery resources and the marine environment. 相似文献

Goal, Scope and Background One of the burning problems of our industrial society is the high consumption of water and the high demand for clean drinking
water. Numerous approaches have been taken to reduce water consumption, but in the long run it seems only possible to recycle
waste water into high quality water. It seems timely to discuss alternative water remediation technologies that are fit for
industrial as well as less developed countries to ensure a high quality of drinking water throughout Europe.
Main Features The present paper discusses a range of phytoremediation technologies to be applied in a modular approach to integrate and
improve the performance of existing wastewater treatment, especially towards the emerging micro pollutants, i.e. organic chemicals
and pharmaceuticals. This topic is of global relevance for the EU.
Results Existing technologies for waste water treatment do not sufficiently address increasing pollution situation, especially with
the growing use of organic pollutants in the private household and health sector. Although some crude chemical approaches
exist, such as advanced oxidation steps, most waste water treatment plants will not be able to adopt them. The same is true
for membrane technologies.
Discussion Incredible progress has been made during recent years, thus providing us with membranes of longevity and stability and, at
the same time, high filtration capacity. However, these systems are expensive and delicate in operation, so that the majority
of communities will not be able to afford them. Combinations of different phytoremediation technologies seem to be most promising
to solve this burning problem.
Conclusions To quantify the occurrence and the distribution of micropollutants, to evaluate their effects, and to prevent them from passing
through wastewater collection and treatment systems into rivers, lakes and ground water bodies represents an urgent task for
applied environmental sciences in the coming years.
Recommendations Public acceptance of green technologies is generally higher than that of industrial processes. The EU should stimulate research
to upgrade existing waste water treatment by implementing phytoremediation modules and demonstrating their reliability to

This study investigates the impact of building aspect ratio (building-height-to-street-canyon-width-ratio), wind speed and
surface and air-temperature difference (Δθs−a) on the heating environment within street canyon. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and energy transport equations
were solved with Renormalization group (RNG) theory version of k-e{\varepsilon} turbulence model. The validation process demonstrated that the model could be trusted for simulating air-temperature and
velocity trends. The temperature and velocity patterns were discussed in idealized street canyons of different aspect ratios
(0.5–2.0) with varying ambient wind speeds (0.5–1.5 m/s) and Δθs−a (2–8 K). Results show that air-temperatures are directly proportional to bulk Richardson number (R
b
) for all but ground heating situation. Conversely, air-temperatures increase significantly across the street canyon with
a decrease in ambient wind speed; however, the impact of Δθs−a was negligible. Clearly, ambient wind speed decreases significantly as it passes over higher AR street canyons. Notably,
air-temperatures were the highest when the windward wall was heated and the least during ground heating. Conversely, air-temperatures

This study investigated the impact of important environmental variables (i.e.,wind speed,solar radiation and cloud cover) on urban heating.Meteorological parameters for fifteen years (from 1990 to 2005),collected at a well developed and densely populated commercial area (Tsim Sha Tsui,Hong Kong),were analyzed in details.Urban heat island intensity (UHII),a well known indicator of urban heating,has been determined as the spatially averaged air-temperature difference between Tsim Sha Tsui and Ta Kwu Ling (a thinly populated rural area with lush vegetation).Results showed that the UHII and cloud cover have increased by around 9.3% and 4%,respectively,whereas the wind speed and solar radiation have decreased by around 24% and 8.5%,respectively.The month of December experienced the highest UHII (10.2°C) but the lowest wind speed (2.6 m/sec) and cloud cover (3.8 oktas).Conversely,the month of April observed the highest increases in the UHII (over 100%) and the highest decreases in wind speed (over 40 %) over fifteen years.Notably,the increases in the UHII and reductions in the wind speed were the highest during the night-time and early morning.Conversely,the intensity of solar radiation reduced while the intensity of urban cool island (UCII) increased during solar noon-time.Results demonstrated strong negative correlation between the UHII and wind speed (coefficient of determination,R2=0.8) but no negative correlation between UCII and solar radiation attenuation.A possible negative correlation between UHII and cloud cover was investigated but could not be substantiated. 相似文献

The present study was aimed to evaluate the cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) levels in the blood samples of adolescent boys, chewing different smokeless tobacco (SLT) products in Pakistan. For comparative purpose, boys of the same age group (12–15 years), not consumed any SLT products were selected as referents. To determine trace levels of Cd and Pb in blood samples, a preconcentration method, vortex-assisted liquid–liquid microextraction (VLLME) has been developed, prior to analysis by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The hydrophobic chelates of Cd and Pb with ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate were extracted into the fine droplets of ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, while nonionic surfactant, Triton X-114 was used as a dispersing medium. The main factors affecting the recoveries of Cd and Pb, such as concentration of APDC, centrifugation time, volume of IL and TX-114, were investigated in detail. It was also observed that adolescent boys who consumed different SLT products have 2- to 3-fold higher levels of Cd and Pb in their blood samples as compared to referent boys (p?<?0.001). 相似文献
