The potential risk of surface and ground water contamination by phosphorus (P) and heavy metals leached from compost-based containerized media has become an environmental concern. Solubility and fractionation of P and heavy metals were evaluated in media containing 0, 25, 50, 75, or 100% compost derived from biosolids and yard trimmings for potential impacts on the environment. As compost proportion in peat-based media increased from 0 to 100%, concentrations of total P, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Mn in the media increased whereas concentrations of total Co and Cr decreased. Except for Cu, all heavy metals in the water-soluble fraction decreased with increasing compost proportion in the media, because of higher Fe, Al, and Ca concentrations and pH values of the composts than the peat. When the media pH is controlled and maintained at normal range of plant growth (5.5-6.5), leaching of the heavy metals is minimal. Incorporation of compost to the peat-based media also decreased the proportion of total P that was water-soluble. However, concentrations of bioavailable inorganic phosphorus (NaHCO3-IP), readily mineralizable organic phosphorus (NaHCO3-OP), potentially bioavailable inorganic phosphorus (NaOH-IP), and potentially bioavailable organic phosphorus (NaOH-OP) were still higher in the media amended with compost because of higher total P concentration in the compost. Further study is needed to verify if less or no topdressing of chemical P fertilizer should be applied to the compost-amended media to minimize P effect on the environment when compost-amended potting media are used for nursery or greenhouse crop production systems.  相似文献

Contamination of unfenced streams with P, sediments, and pathogenic bacteria from cattle (Bos taurus) activity may be affected by the availability of shade and alternative water sources. The objectives of this study were to evaluate water quality in two streams draining tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.)-common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) pastures with different shade distribution, and to quantify the effects of alternative water sources on stream water quality. For 3 yr, loads of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), total phosphorus (TP), and total suspended solids (TSS) were measured during storm flow, and loads of DRP, TP, TSS, and Escherichia coli were measured every 14 d during base flow. We also used GPS collars to determine amount of time cattle spent in riparian areas. Our results showed that cattle-grazed pastures with unfenced streams contributed significant loads of DRP, TP, TSS, and E. coli to surface waters (p < 0.01). Time spent by cattle in riparian areas as well as storm flow loads of DRP, TP, and TSS were larger (p < 0.08) in the pasture with the smaller amount of nonriparian shade. Water trough availability decreased base flow loads of TSS and E. coli in both streams, and decreased time cattle spent in riparian areas in the pasture with the smaller amount of nonriparian shade (p < 0.08). Our results indicate that possible BMPs to reduce contamination from cattle-grazed pastures would be to develop or encourage nonriparian shade and to provide cattle with alternative water sources away from the stream.  相似文献

Aluminum is the third most abundant element in nature, accounting for nearly 8% of the Earth's crust. Because of its chemical activity, aluminum is not found naturally in its free, or metallic, state. However, in its ionic or combined forms, aluminum is a truly ubiquitous element.Because of the widespread use of metallic aluminum in cooking and packaging applications, the Aluminum Association has funded critical reviews of the world's literature on the health effects of aluminum and aluminum compounds for the past 30 years.More recently, an extensive research and literature surveillance effort was developed to provide information on the neurological implications of aluminum, dietary intakes and body balance, and analytical capabilities. Based on these efforts the following conclusions can presently be drawn: (1) the cause (or causes) of Alzheimer's disease is not known; (2) the biological significance of aluminum found in the brain is not understood; (3) aluminum is poorly absorbed by the body; and (4) the normal ingestion of aluminum from food and water should have no adverse effects on human health.  相似文献

These experiments were designed to look at the cellular effects in key organs in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) after exposure in vivo to radiation and subtoxic levels of aluminum (Al) and cadmium (Cd), alone or in combination. Salmon (25g) were exposed to a single 0.5Gy dose of gamma-irradiation in water containing Cd, Al or Cd+Al. Three fish per group were sacrificed after 1h and the liver, pronephros, fin and gill of each was dissected. Small explants of each tissue were set up. After 2 days, the culture medium was harvested and filtered then placed on a reporter cell line for determination of stress signal activity (bystander effects). Radiation in combination with Cd and/or Al, caused bystander effects in tissues harvested from in vivo exposed salmon. The effects vary between different organs and are not consistently additive or synergistic for a given treatment. Tissue type appears to be critical. Liver cultures produce a toxic factor which is lethal to reporter cells, and therefore no liver data could be obtained. It is hoped that this stress signal response will prove to be a useful indicator of environmental stress in species inhabiting aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

The resonant interaction of surface and internal waves produces a nonlinear mechanism for energy transfer among wave components in oceans, lakes, and estuaries. In many field situations, the stratification may be well approximated by a two-layer fluid with a diffuse interface. The growth and damping rates of sub-harmonic interfacial waves generated by a surface wave through a three-wave resonant interaction are measured in the laboratory. These measurements are compared with theoretical predictions. A diffuse interface reduces the damping rate and increases the growth rate. The predicted growth rate provides excellent comparison with the laboratory measurements. The inclusion of the effects of a diffuse interface significantly improve the comparison.  相似文献

A joint conference, for the fourth straight year cosponsored by the Air & Waste Management Association’s TP-6, TP-7, and ITF-2 technical committees, and the Atmospheric Research and Exposure Assessment Laboratory of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, was held at Raleigh, North Carolina, May 2-5, 1989. The technical program consisted of 145 presentations, held in 14 separate technical sessions, on recent advances in the measurement and monitoring of toxic and related pollutants found in ambient and source atmospheres. Covering a wide range of measurement topics and superbly supported by 57 exhibitors of instrumentation and consulting services, the symposium was enthusiastically received by more than 700 attendees from the United States and other countries. This overview contains a selection of the highlights from the technical presentations. A synopsis of the keynote address to the symposium is also included.  相似文献

Spills, leaks, and accidental discharges of petroleum products have contaminated soil at thousands of sites in the United States. One remedial action technique for treating petroleum contaminated soil is the use of thermal desorption technologies.

This paper describes key elements of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report titled “Thermal Desorption Applications Manual for Treating Nonhazardous Petroleum Contaminated Soils.”1 The applications manual describes the types, mechanical and operating characteristics of thermal desorption technologies that are commercially available to treat petroleum-contaminated soils. It also provides step-by-step procedures to rate the critical success factors influencing the general applicability of thermal desorption at a particular site. These factors include site, waste and soil characteristics, regulatory requirements, and process equipment design and operating characteristics. Procedures are provided to determine the types of thermal desorption systems that are most technically suitable for a given application and to determine whether on-site or off-site treatment is likely to be the most cost-effective alternative. Key factors that determine process economics are identified, and estimated cost ranges for treating petroleum-contaminated soils are presented. Spreadsheets are provided that can be used for performing cost analyses for specific applications.

The aforementioned report is applicable only to the treatment of petroleum-contaminated soils that are exempt from being classified as hazardous wastes under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) or as toxic materials under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Although much of the technical discussion in this paper is applicable to the treatment of both nonhazardous and hazardous ortoxic materials, permitting requirements and treatment costs are significantly different forthe individual categories of waste materials.  相似文献

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research on direct-reading instruments (DRIs) needed an instantaneous sampling method to provide independent confirmation of the concentrations of chemical warfare agent (CWA) simulants. It was determined that evacuated canisters would be the method of choice. There is no method specifically validated for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods. The purpose of this study was to validate an evacuated canister method for sampling seven specific VOCs that can be used as a simulant for CWA agents (cyclohexane) or influence the DRI measurement of CWA agents (acetone, chloroform, methylene chloride, methyl ethyl ketone, hexane, and carbon tetrachloride [CCl4]). The method used 6-L evacuated stainless-steel fused silica-lined canisters to sample the atmosphere containing VOCs. The contents of the canisters were then introduced into an autosampler/preconcentrator using a microscale purge and trap (MPT) method. The MPT method trapped and concentrated the VOCs in the air sample and removed most of the carbon dioxide and water vapor. After preconcentration, the samples were analyzed using a gas chromatograph with a mass selective detector. The method was tested, evaluated, and validated using the NIOSH recommended guidelines. The evaluation consisted of determining the optimum concentration range for the method; the sample stability over 30 days; and the accuracy, precision, and bias of the method. This method meets the NIOSH guidelines for six of the seven compounds (excluding acetone) tested in the range of 2.3-50 parts per billion (ppb), making it suitable for sampling of these VOCs at the ppb level.  相似文献
