Many butterflies acquire nutrients from non-nectar sources such as puddles. To better understand how male Papilio butterflies identify suitable sites for puddling, we used behavioral and electrophysiological methods to examine the responses of Japanese Papilio butterflies to Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+. Based on behavioral analyses, these butterflies preferred a 10-mM Na+ solution to K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ solutions of the same concentration and among a tested range of 1?mM to 1?M NaCl. We also measured the ion concentrations of solutions sampled from puddling sites in the field. Na+ concentrations of the samples were up to 6?mM, slightly lower than that preferred by butterflies in the behavioral experiments. Butterflies that sipped the 10?mM Na+ solution from the experimental trays did not continue to puddle on the ground. Additionally, butterflies puddled at sites where the concentrations of K+, Ca2+, and/or Mg2+ were higher than that of Na+. This suggests that K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ do not interfere with the detection of Na+ by the Papilio butterfly. Using an electrophysiological method, tip recordings, receptor neurons in contact chemosensilla inside the proboscis evoked regularly firing impulses to 1, 10, and 100?mM NaCl solutions but not to CaCl2 or MgCl2. The dose?Cresponse patterns to the NaCl solutions were different among the neurons, which were classified into three types. These results showed that Japanese Papilio butterflies puddle using Na+ detected by the contact chemosensilla in the proboscis, which measure its concentration.  相似文献

A fine porcelain open-cell photo-catalytic filter with titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) was evaluated for sterilization and sanitation of bio-polluted industrial water. In simulated seawater industrial effluent samples, the populations of Escherichia coli and Vibrio parahaemolyticus quickly decreased and reached non-detectable level within 10min. In seawater effluents from a seaweed processing plant, the bacterial populations in two samples quickly decreased by more than 10(3). In another two samples the decreases were slow and lowered by less than 10(2). Using fluorescence microscopy, it was indicated that the bacterial cells treated with photo-catalytic TiO(2) were damaged. In addition, the protein concentration in simulated seawater effluent slowly decreased using the photo-catalytic TiO(2) reaction; and reached similar concentrations as seawater near cultured seaweed beds. These results indicate that using a reactor with a TiO(2) photo-catalyst filter was effective for the sanitation of seawater effluents.  相似文献

Anguilla japonica leptocephali are transported from their offshore spawning area to their recruitment areas in East Asia, but their depth distributions, food sources and feeding are still poorly known. This study analyzed carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of leptocephali of A. japonica, Ariosoma major and Ariosoma spp., and of particulate organic matter (POM), their likely food source, at five different depths in 2004–2009. We used mixing models to show that A. japonica appeared to be feeding at depths between 5 and 50 m, but sometimes deeper. A. major appeared to have a tendency of mostly feeding at depths of 50 m or shallower. Although the A. japonica and Ariosoma spp. collected in the same area during the leptocephalus stage appeared to have different feeding ecologies possibly related to different types of POM, their different depth distributions, sizes and transport histories may also help explain these differences.  相似文献

Abstract

The control of Hg emissions from a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) is very important, because more than 78% of municipal solid waste (MSW) is incinerated. The Hg content of coal used in utility boilers is relatively low in Japan. In this study, recent trends in the Hg content of MSW in Japan and activated carbon (AC) injection as a control technology of Hg emission from an MSWI are discussed. The effect of AC injection on Hg removal from flue gas in an MSWI was investigated by pilot-scale experiments using a bag filter (BF). The injection of AC increases the Hg reduction ratio by 20–30% compared with cases without AC injection. The Hg reduction ratio increases as the flue gas temperature decreases. The Hg reduction ratio is closely related to the inlet Hg concentration and was expressed with a Langmuir-type adsorption isotherm.  相似文献

An accidental explosion occurred in a waste storage tank at an incineration plant in Kawasaki, Japan, on May 11, 1997. The accident was caused primarily by unintended mixing involving reactive chemicals, such as organic peroxides (POs) and acrylonitrile (AN). The PO initiated polymerization of AN and the heat released during the polymerization led to a runaway reaction and explosion. POs are widely used in the chemical industry and can be self-reactive and hazardous when mixed with other chemicals such as acids and alkalis. The goal of this study was to obtain a better understanding of the mixing hazard of chemicals through an evaluation of POs with other chemicals using conventional experimental techniques such as glass test-tube tests, Dewar vessel tests, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Seven types of POs were mixed with AN. Test results were classified into four ranks based on the hazard criteria. In addition, di(2-ethylhexyl)-peroxydicarbonate/AN mixtures were investigated in detail and the influences of the mixing ratio and the stirring rate were examined.  相似文献

 Continuous abundance estimates (510 m resolution) of the copepods Neocalanus cristatus, N. flemingeri and Metridia pacifica were obtained with an electronic particle counter along cruise tracks in the subarctic western North Pacific in spring. For all three species, the number of patches decreased exponentially with increasing patch size. Most patches (63 to 83%) were dominated by one species, and patches of the same species more closely spaced than patches of different species. The patches of M. pacifica tended to coexist with those of N. cristatus. In contrast, patches of N. flemingeri rarely co-occurred with those of other copepods. These patterns were more clearly observed in fine-scale observations with sampling intervals of <31 m. Coherence analysis of copepod species pairs showed no characteristic scale at 2 to 50 km wave lengths. At shorter wave lengths (<2 km), frequent positive correlations were observed between N. cristatus and M. pacifica. Thus, the distribution of copepods appears to be a mosaic assemblage of patches of each copepod species. These results suggest that copepods have a mechanism to form species-specific aggregations, and the aggregation and segregation processes are maintained at a scale of <2 km. Selected chemical characteristics of rare earth elements (REEs) in 89 waste ash samples, including food scrap ashes (FSA), animal waste ashes (AWA), horticulture waste ashes (HWA), sewage sludge ashes (SSA) and incinerator bottom ashes (IBA), were examined in this study. The results showed that Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Dy, Yb, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu in the waste ash samples were normally distributed, but Sc, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb were not. Average REE concentrations followed the sequence of Ce > La = Y> Sc>Nd>Sm>Pr>Gd>Dy>Eu>Tb>Er> Yb>Ho>Lu>Tm. Of the five types of waste ashes, total REE contents (sigmaREE) ranged from 54 to 130 mg/kg, following the sequence of SSA>HWA>IBA>AWA>FSA; individual REE concentrations were within 0.04-20, 0.1-29, 0.2-33, 0.1-44 and 0.01-41 mg/kg for FSA, AWA, HWA, SSA and IBA, respectively. Crust-normalized REE patterns indicated that SSA was enriched with Sc, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb and slightly enriched with La, Ce; IBA was enriched with Eu, Tb and slightly with La, Y, Ce; FSA was slightly enriched with Sm, Eu, Tb; REEs were not found to be elevated in HWA and AWA. Comparison of REE content in the waste ashes and in six principal Japanese agricultural soils indicated that application of FSA, AWA and HWA to agricultural land will cause no REE problem, but continuous application of SSA or IBA may cause Sc, Sm or Eu accumulation in some of the soils.  相似文献

We examined dissolution of polystyrene (PS) into cyclic monoterpenes present in tree essential oils, in order to develop an environmentally friendly shrinking agent for expanded polystyrene. The relationship between the chemical structure of the monoterpenes and their dissolution power for PS was studied through the solubility parameter (δ) and apparent activation energy (E a) for dissolution. (R)-Limonene and its structural isomers on a C=C bond have high solvent power for PS. This favorable solubility was explained by their solubility parameters. The occurrence of hydroxyl group in a solvent molecule, such as in terpinen-4-ol, reduced affinity for PS. Bicyclic monoterpenes and 1,8-cineole, which have sterically bulky structure, showed limited dissolution power even though they have solubility parameters similar to that of (R)-limonene. Their bulky structures would interfere with permeation of solvent into the PS matrix. Cyclic monoterpenes and PS were recovered almost quantitatively by simple steam distillation of the PS solution.  相似文献
