Grazing effects on nitrogen fixation in coral reef algal turfs 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This study addressed whether grazing by the sea urchin Diadema antillarum influenced rates of nitrogen fixation by algal turf communities on Caribbean coral reefs. Because the turfs were nitrogen-limited,
we also assessed whether newly-fixed nitrogen was important for supporting net primary productivity by the turfs. We measured
acetylene reduction in turfs grown in treatments excluding or including D. antillarum in the presence of other herbivores at 3 m water depth on Tague Bay forereef, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. These were
the first measurements of acetylene reduction on coral reefs under quasi-natural conditions of high water-flow and photosynthetic
oxygen generation. Rates of acetylene reduction under these conditions were as high as any measured previously in coral reef
communities (mean 7.6 nmol C2H4 cm−2 h−1). Algal turfs grazed by D. antillarum and other herbivores had chlorophyll-specific acetylene reduction rates up to three times higher than when D. antillarum was excluded. High rates of nitrogen fixation by the turfs were sufficient to meet <2% of the nitrogen required to support
net chlorophyll-specific primary productivity over 24 h. Grazer-mediated increases in nitrogen fixation do not appear responsible
for a parallel enhancement of net primary productivity. Algal turfs at this site must be dependent primarily on external sources
of nitrogen.

Summary Preference by females for choosing mates at male aggregations has been hypothesized as the primary selective pressure favoring the formation of leks, but alternative hypotheses account for lek formation without invoking female preference. Observational studies to determine whether male mating success increases with lek size, as predicted under the female preference hypothesis, have produced inconsistent results, possibly due to covariation of lek size with other variables or to male-male or intersexual conflict over lek size. We tested whether females prefer larger leks in a field experiment with ruffs (Philomachus pugnax), a lekking sandpiper, in which male group size, composition, and location were controlled. Wild females chose the larger of two adjacent groups often enough such that males in larger groups had significantly higher per capita rates of female visitation (Table 3). Such behavior would probably lead to higher per male mating rates at larger leks, which is generally considered a necessary condition for female choice to select for lek display (Fig. 2). Lek size in nature will reflect both female preference for larger leks and competition among males, which may favor smaller lek size. A multinational collaborative study during the summer of 1983 addressed organizational alternatives in natural systems management. Participants were particularly interested in ways different governments attempted to resolve the disparity between the interconnected quality of nature and the compartmentalized structure of bureaucracies. Five patterns of organization have evolved to meet this challenge: mission agencies managing ecosystems; independent or interagency central environmental units: environmental units within mission agencies; environmental components within central planning units; and regional superagencies. Abstract Traffic noise is ubiquitous in many communities and is an important environmental concern, especially for persons located near major roadways. Several different methods are available to estimate noise levels resulting from roadway traffic. These include computational, graphical, and computer modeling techniques. The prediction methodology presented here is a simplified technique that can be used for estimating noise resulting from traffic and for screening traffic noise impacts. This Traffic Noise Screening (TNS) approach consists of a series of traffic noise level prediction graphs developed for different roadway configurations. The graphs are based on the results from using the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) STAMINA2.0 computerized noise prediction model for various scenarios. Data inputs to the TNS approach include roadway geometries, traffic volumes, vehicle travel speed, and centerline distance to the receptors. The TNS graphs allow easy estimation of traffic noise levels for use in predicting traffic-related noise impacts. This TNS approach is not intended as a substitute for detailed modeling, such as with STAMINA2.0, but as a screening tool to aid in determining when detailed modeling may be necessary. If screening results indicate that noise estimates are significant, or if the scenario is rather complex, then additional, more detailed modeling can be performed. 相似文献

Humans have continuously interacted with natural systems, resulting in the formation and development of coupled human and natural systems (CHANS). Recent studies reveal the complexity of organizational, spatial, and temporal couplings of CHANS. These couplings have evolved from direct to more indirect interactions, from adjacent to more distant linkages, from local to global scales, and from simple to complex patterns and processes. Untangling complexities, such as reciprocal effects and emergent properties, can lead to novel scientific discoveries and is essential to developing effective policies for ecological and socioeconomic sustainability. Opportunities for truly integrating various disciplines are emerging to address fundamental questions about CHANS and meet society's unprecedented challenges. 相似文献

When evaluated at the scale of individual processes, next-generation technologies may be more energy and emissions intensive than current technology. However, many advanced technologies have the potential to reduce material and energy consumption in upstream or downstream processing stages. In order to fully understand the benefits and consequences of technology deployment, next-generation technologies should be evaluated in context, as part of a supply chain. This work presents the Materials Flow through Industry (MFI) supply chain modeling tool. The MFI tool is a cradle-to-gate linear network model of the US industrial sector that can model a wide range of manufacturing scenarios, including changes in production technology and increases in industrial energy efficiency. The MFI tool was developed to perform supply chain scale analyses in order to quantify the impacts and benefits of next-generation technologies and materials at that scale. For the analysis presented in this paper, the MFI tool is utilized to explore a case study comparing three lightweight vehicle supply chains to the supply chain of a conventional, standard weight vehicle. Several of the lightweight vehicle supply chains are evaluated under manufacturing scenarios that include next-generation production technologies and next-generation materials. Results indicate that producing lightweight vehicles is more energy and emission intensive than producing the non-lightweight vehicle, but the fuel saved during vehicle use offsets this increase. In this case study, greater reductions in supply chain energy and emissions were achieved through the application of the next-generation technologies than from application of energy efficiency increases. 相似文献

Oxyfuel combustion is a promising technology that may greatly facilitate carbon capture and sequestration by increasing the relative CO2 content of the combustion emission stream. However, the potential effect of enhanced oxygen combustion conditions on emissions of criteria and hazardous air pollutants (e.g., acid gases, particulates, metals and organics) is not well studied. It is possible that combustion under oxyfuel conditions could produce emissions posing different risks than those currently being managed by the power industry (e.g., by changing the valence state of metals). The data available for addressing these concerns are quite limited and are typically derived from laboratory-scale or pilot-scale tests. A review of the available data does suggest that oxyfuel combustion may decrease the air emissions of some pollutants (e.g., SO2, NOx, particulates) whereas data for other pollutants are too limited to draw any conclusions. The oxy-combustion systems that have been proposed to date do not have a conventional “stack” and combustion flue gas is treated in such a way that solid or liquid waste streams are the major outputs. Use of this technology will therefore shift emissions from air to solid or liquid waste streams, but the risk management implications of this potential change have yet to be assessed. Truly useful studies of the potential effects of oxyfuel combustion on power plant emissions will require construction of integrated systems containing a combustion system coupled to a CO2 processing unit. Sampling and analysis to assess potential emission effects should be an essential part of integrated system tests. Implications: Oxyfuel combustion may facilitate carbon capture and sequestration by increasing the relative CO2 content of the combustion emission stream. However, the potential effect of enhanced oxygen combustion conditions on emissions of criteria and hazardous air pollutants has not been well studied. Combustion under oxyfuel conditions could produce emissions posing different risks than those currently being managed by the power industry. Relations of Habitat-Specific Algal Assemblages to Land Use and Water Chemistry in the Willamette Basin, Oregon 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Benthic algal assemblages, water chemistry, and habitat were characterized at 25 stream sites in the Willamette Basin, Oregon, during low flow in 1994. Seventy-three algal samples yielded 420 taxa — mostly diatoms, blue-green algae, and green algae. Algal assemblages from depositional samples were strongly dominated by diatoms (76% mean relative abundance), whereas erosional samples were dominated by blue-green algae (68% mean relative abundance).Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of semiquantitative and qualitative (presence/absence) data sets identified four environmental variables (maximum specific conductance, % open canopy, pH, and drainage area) that were significant in describing patterns of algal taxa among sites. Based on CCA, four groups of sites were identified: streams in forested basins that supported oligotrophic taxa, such as Diatoma mesodon;small streams in agricultural and urban basins that contained a variety of eutrophic and nitrogen-heterotrophic algal taxa; larger rivers draining areas of mixed land use that supported planktonic, eutrophic, and nitrogen-heterotrophic algal taxa; and streams with severely degraded or absent riparian vegetation (> 75% open canopy) that were dominated by other planktonic, eutrophic, and nitrogen-heterotrophic algal taxa.
