Sauropod dinosaurs were the largest terrestrial herbivores and pushed at the limits of vertebrate biomechanics and physiology. Sauropods exhibit high craniodental diversity in ecosystems where numerous species co-existed, leading to the hypothesis that this biodiversity is linked to niche subdivision driven by ecological specialisation. Here, we quantitatively investigate feeding behaviour hypotheses for the iconic sauropod Diplodocus. Biomechanical modelling, using finite element analysis, was used to examine the performance of the Diplodocus skull. Three feeding behaviours were modelled: muscle-driven static biting, branch stripping and bark stripping. The skull was found to be ‘over engineered’ for static biting, overall experiencing low stress with only the dentition enduring high stress. When branch stripping, the skull, similarly, is under low stress, with little appreciable difference between those models. When simulated for bark stripping, the skull experiences far greater stresses, especially in the teeth and at the jaw joint. Therefore, we refute the bark-stripping hypothesis, while the hypotheses of branch stripping and/or precision biting are both consistent with our findings, showing that branch stripping is a biomechanically plausible feeding behaviour for diplodocids. Interestingly, in all simulations, peak stress is observed in the premaxillary–maxillary ‘lateral plates’, supporting the hypothesis that these structures evolved to dissipate stress induced while feeding. These results lead us to conclude that the aberrant craniodental form of Diplodocus was adapted for food procurement rather than resisting high bite forces. 相似文献

A simplistic aggregate model of global economic activity supports a 50-year visioning exercise with targets defined in terms of aggregate measures of global equity (convergence) and sustainability (contraction). Some ambitious combinations of these targets turn out to be infeasible even under the most favorable modeling assumptions. No contraction target (no reduction in fossil fuel consumption relative to the present) was possible, for example, if international capital transfers pushed per capita incomes in low-income countries above 33% of levels achieved in high-income countries. Lower prices for renewable alternatives to exhaustible resources generally made sustainability targets easier to achieve, but lower prices for renewable resources also made equity targets more difficult to achieve. Improved substitution between capital and labor made equity targets easier to achieve in relative terms, but improved substitution between capital and labor could make any given sustainability target more or less difficult to achieve. All the results suggest that it is possible to overstate the purported conflict between achieving sustainability and equity targets. The very transfers of international capital that would promote relative equity between high-income and low-income countries could also work to spread the incidence of achieving any sustainability target more evenly across their boundaries. 相似文献

The impact of contemporary agriculture on Danish lakes is acknowledged to be extreme. In particular, high loading of nutrients
from agricultural soils contributes to the eutrophic conditions found in many of Denmark’s lakes. Palaeolimnological studies
have shown that human disturbance of the Danish landscape since the introduction of agriculture around 6,000 years ago has
had a major impact on lake ecosystems. The European Union’s Water Framework Directive requires an evaluation of reference
conditions for lakes, the conditions expected with only minimal human impact. Monitoring data and palaeolimnological studies
of Danish lakes demonstrate that many of the most detrimental effects of eutrophication have been experienced in recent decades.
A new study has suggested that the reference status for Danish lakes may be set to the status in ad 1850–1900, probably providing attainable, realistic restoration targets for many sites. The aims of this study were to explore
the impacts of past and contemporary land-use on Danish lakes, and to consider how appropriate the use of 1850 as a date to
define reference status is for these sites. Catchment land-cover data for ad 1800, taken from historical maps, and sedimentary diatom assemblages of the same age, from dated sediment cores, were used
to assess the impact of pre-industrial land-use on 20 Danish lakes. Analysis of contemporary land-cover data and surface-sediment
diatom assemblages for the 20 sites was also made. In-lake total phosphorus (TP) concentrations were estimated using the sedimentary
diatom assemblages and an existing calibration dataset for Danish lakes. The percentage of the lake catchment that was agricultural
land in ad 1800 explained 8.8% of the total variation in the diatom data. The land-cover variables ‘built-up areas’ and ‘plantations’,
together explained 16.9% of the variation in the diatom data for the modern samples. Diatom-inferred TP concentrations were
high for both ad 1800 (mean 112 μg TP L−1) and the present (mean 122 μg TP L−1), the latter estimates reflecting efforts in recent decades to reduce nutrient loading to Danish lakes following very high
levels of nutrient enrichment post-1950. The data presented highlight the impact that human activities 200 years ago, particularly
agriculture, had on Danish lake systems. The long cultural history and major anthropogenic disturbance of the Danish landscape
mean that true reference conditions for lakes (or ‘baseline’ conditions, those found prior to human impacts) can be found

Creating a habitat classification and mapping system for marine and coastal ecosystems is a daunting challenge due to the
complex array of habitats that shift on various spatial and temporal scales. To meet this challenge, several countries have,
or are developing, national classification systems and mapping protocols for marine habitats. To be effectively applied by
scientists and managers it is essential that classification systems be comprehensive and incorporate pertinent physical, geological,
biological, and anthropogenic habitat characteristics. Current systems tend to provide over-simplified conceptual structures
that do not capture biological habitat complexity, marginalize anthropogenic features, and remain largely untested at finer
scales. We propose a multi-scale hierarchical framework with a particular focus on finer scale habitat classification levels
and conceptual schematics to guide habitat studies and management decisions. A case study using published data is included
to compare the proposed framework with existing schemes. The example demonstrates how the proposed framework’s inclusion of
user-defined variables, a combined top-down and bottom-up approach, and multi-scale hierarchical organization can facilitate

Polycyclic musks, 1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-4,6,6,7,8,8-hexamethylcyclopenta[g]-2-benzopyran (HHCB) and 7-acetyl-1,1,3,4,4,6-hexamethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (AHTN), are used as fragrance ingredients in numerous consumer products such as cleaning agents and personal care products. Studies have reported the widespread occurrence of these musks in surface waters and fish from western European countries. Nevertheless, little is known about their accumulation in humans and wildlife in the United States. In this study, we measured concentrations of HHCB and AHTN in human adipose fat collected from New York City. Furthermore, tissues from marine mammals, water birds, and fish collected from US waters were analyzed to determine the concentrations of HHCB and AHTN. Concentrations of HHCB and AHTN in human adipose fat samples ranged from 12 to 798 and from <5 to 134 ng/g, on a lipid weight basis, respectively. A significant correlation existed between the concentrations of HHCB and AHTN in human adipose fat. Concentrations of HHCB and AHTN were not positively correlated with age or gender of the donors. HHCB was found in tissues of several wildlife species, but not in the livers of polar bear from the Alaskan Arctic. Among wildlife species analyzed, spinner and bottlenose dolphins collected from Florida coastal waters contained measurable concentrations of HHCB. 相似文献

ABSTRACTAs federal, state, and local governments and agencies respond to calls to make decisions and implement programs according to tenets of ‘good governance’, a need exists to develop methods for systematically evaluating performance. ‘Good governance’ has been characterized as including a wide array of principles, which vary across literatures. Comparatively little scholarship has sought to systematically quantify program achievement in accordance with these principles. We develop and present a scale for measuring program achievement in accordance with eight main principles of good governance: inclusivity, fairness, transparency, accountability, legitimacy, direction, performance, and capability. We present the results of a pilot implementation of the scale within the context of two community-based deer management programs. Our results suggest that these principles of good governance may not sort into distinct dimensions in a real-world context. 相似文献

Defensiveness of honeybee colonies of Apis cerana and Apis mellifera (actively balling the wasps but reduction of foraging) against predatory wasps, Vespa velutina, and false wasps was assessed. There were significantly more worker bees in balls of the former than latter. Core temperatures
in a ball around a live wasp of A. cerana were significantly higher than those of A. mellifera, and also significantly more when exposed to false wasps. Core temperatures of bee balls exposed to false wasps were significantly
lower than those exposed to V. velutina for both A. cerana and for A. mellifera. The lethal thermal limits for V. velutina, A. cerana and A. mellifera were significantly different, so that both species of honeybees have a thermal safety factor in heat-killing such wasp predators.
During wasps attacks at the hives measured at 3, 6 and 12 min, the numbers of Apis cerana cerana and Apis cerana indica bees continuing to forage were significantly reduced with increased wasp attack time. Tropical lowland A. c. indica reduced foraging rates significantly more than the highland A. c. cerana bees; but, there was no significant effect on foraging by A. mellifera. The latency to recovery of honeybee foraging was significantly greater the longer the duration of wasp attacks. The results

This paper describes a method for biochemical analysis of proteins from fetal skin biopsy samples. The method has wide potential application for diagnosis of disorders with a known protein abnormality detectable by protein staining or a specific antibody. Analysis requires a single 1 mm biopsy, is rapid (2 days) and extremely sensitive. In the present study, fetal skin biopsies from normal fetuses and a fetus at risk for lamellar ichthyosis were obtained. The epidermis or hairs with attached follicular cells were dissected from the remaining skin. Proteins were extracted and separated by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Proteins from duplicate gels were transferred to nitrocellulose and immunostained for the acidic and basic keratins and for the keratin filament associated protein, filaggrin, using monoclonal antibodies. All samples contained keratins typical of fetal epidermis at 20 weeks gestation. Presence of filaggrin is variable at this age and depends on the presence of keratinized cells of hair canals. No keratin abnormalities in the fetus at risk for lamellar ichthyosis were detected, however, in one presumably normal biopsy, an abnormally low proportion of the 67 kd keratin and the presence of follicular keratins were evident. These results demonstrate that biochemical analysis of fetal biopsies is possible, thus increasing the diagnostic potential of the fetal biopsy procedure for disorders in which a known protein or antigen is altered in utero. 相似文献

Nestling birds produce a multicomponent begging display that has visual (e.g. posturing) and vocal (e.g. call rate) elements. Most work on the function of the display has focused on each component separately. However, understanding the evolution of complex displays such as begging requires knowledge of how the components function collectively. The purpose of our study was to determine how postural intensity and calling rate together influence parental feeding decisions in tree swallows, Tachycineta bicolor . We compared how begging components responded to a manipulation in which pairs of nestlings were either free to approach the parent when it arrived to feed (unconfined treatment) or confined to the back of their nestbox by a Plexiglass partition (confined treatment). We found no significant differences in postural intensity between treatments, but calling rate was significantly higher in the confined treatment. In both treatments, postural intensity, but not calling rate, correlated with hunger. Both components positively and independently correlated with the likelihood of a nestling being fed, although the correlation with postural intensity was stronger. Previous work suggested that both posture and call rate advertised hunger in nestling tree swallows. Here, call rate was not associated with hunger, but rather was affected by nestling position. These results suggest that calling may serve an additional role in helping nestlings in disadvantaged positions attract parental attention. The results also suggest that calling may have a complex relationship with hunger, position and nestmates. 相似文献
