We investigated the effectiveness of sodium hydroxide/ethylene glycol (NaOH/EG) for dehalogenation of automobile shredder residue (ASR) using a ball mill. Efficient dehalogenation was achieved at atmospheric pressure by combining the use of EG (196 degrees C b.p.) as a replacement solvent for NaOH with ball milling, which improved contact between ASR and OH(-) in solution. Moderate NaOH concentrations and increased ball mill rotation speeds produced high dechlorination that was not significantly affected by the weight ratio of ASR to EG. NaOH/EG dechlorination increased with temperature with an apparent activation energy of 50 kJ mol(-1) confirming that the reaction proceeded under chemical reaction control. The modified shrinking-core model was appropriate to explain the dechlorination process. Low chloro levels in our NaOH/EG-treated ASR suggested that this material could be used for feedstock recycling and the wet process may be applicable for dehalogenation of other important waste streams.  相似文献

When a fly ash waste material from a copper refining process containing large amounts of As2O3 is solidified using cement and lime, the arsenic concentration in the leachate can be lowered to ca. 5 mg/l in a saturated solution of Ca(OH)2. It is shown that the decrease of the concentration in the leachate, mainly of As(III), is due to the formation of insoluble CaHAsO3 in the leachate in the presence of Ca(OH)2. This method is compared with a method whereby use is made of oxidation of the waste before solidification to oxidise As(III) to As(V) using H2O2. The arsenic concentration in the leachate of the extraction test of an oxidised S/S sample was lowered to ca. 0.5 mg/l, a factor of 10 below the one for a non-oxidised sample. It is shown that the decrease of the concentration in the leachate mainly of As(V) is due to the formation of insoluble Ca3(AsO4)2 in the presence of Ca(OH)2. Extensive use was made of the speciation program MINTEQA2, to clarify the immobilisation of arsenic.  相似文献

In this paper levels of four (Hg, Cd, Pb, As) potential harmful elements (PHE) were measured in three different environmental matrices (sediments, macroalgae and fishes) from the Aeolian Archipelago and control areas both after 1 and 10 months from a volcanic activity of particular relevance occurred at the end of October 2002. Results were analysed on a multivariate statistical basis with the aim to evaluate: (I) general levels of pollution and increase of PHE due to the event; (II) differences observed among tested matrices in the time of recovery after the occurrence of the critical event; (III) the biological enrichment of PHE along the trophic web produced by the geological event. Results evidenced that volcanic emissions could represent a local source of particular relevance able to determine great enrichments of considered PHE in sediments and biological species. After 10 months from the event, levels in sediments and macroalgae notably decreased, whereas fish species evidenced an increase, principally related to the bioaccumulation phenomena. On the basis of the biological enrichment factors (BEF), major enrichments were evidenced after 1 month whereas, after 10 months, were recorded values reliable to an incomplete recovery. Concerning Cd, the BEF higher levels reported for the species Serranus cabrilla was probably related both to the diet and to the specific detoxification rates of this species.  相似文献

The EU Nitrate Directive has spurred many countries to regulate manure production and manure application. Farmers have three allocation options: spreading manure on their own land, transporting manure to other farmers' land or processing manure. The manure problem can be seen as an allocation problem. To better understand this allocation problem, we have developed the spatial mathematical programming multi-agent simulation (MP-MAS) model. This model has been applied in Flanders, Belgium, a region with a high concentration of livestock. The model evaluates the cost efficiency of policy intervention in the manure market through obliged processing. We propose to further optimise the policy using a regionally differentiated manure pressure indicator, which is directly derived from the dual outcome of the mathematical programme. This indicator increases transparency in the manure and processing market, leading to better decision support about location and type of manure processing.  相似文献

The arguments against the use of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) for non-medical sex selection are analysed. It is concluded that the distinction between medical and non-medical reasons is difficult to maintain, that the disproportionality of means and end is not a decisive counterargument and that the fear of damage to the reputation of PGD does not justify the refusal of controversial applications. Moreover, since non-medical sex selection does not belong to basic health care, it should not be equally accessible to all. The position defended in this article is founded on two basic principles: (1) medical reasons have priority on non-medical reasons, and (2) personal reasons do not qualify for public funding. In order to respect both principles, it is proposed that restrictions should be installed to control the number of requests for social sexing and that a tax should be imposed on these elective services. Environmental impacts of a farm which is managed in accordance with ecological criteria is assessed. To this end the ecoaudit ordinance of the European Union 1836/93/EWG is used as guiding principle. This article focuses on methods and results of the impact assessment (chapter 2, 3) and the recommendations derived from that (chapter 4). Before that, objectives of investigation (chapter 1.1), key topics of the assessment ordinance are summarised (chapter 1.2), and finally the farm and the main fields of investigation are described (chapter 1.3). The density of complex hedge rows, as one from 21 assessment criteria, exceeds the limit of tolerance. The investigation underlines the need for further methodological harmonisation.  相似文献

We investigated the physiological plasticity and environmental tolerance of two phylogenetically closely related, ecologically similar and co-occurring species of supralittoral amphipods differing drastically in the size of their geographical ranges. A series of physiological traits were characterised for the Corsican-endemic Talorchestia ugolinii Bella-Santini and Ruffo and the widespread Talitrus saltator Montagu. The effect of body mass, temperature and salinity on heart rate (used as proxy for metabolic activity and stress), the effect of temperature on oxygen consumption and the tolerance to salinity exposure were investigated in both species, together with the characterisation of haemolymph osmoregulation in T. ugolinii. Our results showed that there is a clear difference in the resting metabolic rates and physiological capacity, as well as environmental tolerance, between T. saltator and T. ugolinii, with T. saltator overall showing a broader physiological niche. Although T. ugolinii showed a relatively good ability to regulate its haemolymph osmotic concentration (similar to that previously described for T. saltator), it demonstrated a lower tolerance to exposure to hypo-osmotic stress. In addition, a consistent picture emerged between the ability to control the cardiac function and the capacity to actively respond to osmotic stress. The physiological findings are discussed in relation to the known ecology and geographical distribution of T. ugolinii.  相似文献
