Burning of western low sulfur coal, to reduce sulfur oxide emissions, has resulted in decreased electrostatic precipi-tator collection efficiencies. In an effort to restore pre-cipitator performance a flue gas conditioning program was established by the company. This paper is a brief history of Commonwealth Edison Company’s experience with sulfur trioxide as a flue gas conditioning agent. Testing at State Line Station has proven that sulfur trioxide conditioning can effectively be used to improve precipitator performance when burning low sulfur coals. Although the first phase of the conditioning program is not completed, information has been gained which is being used as a basis in design and evaluation of future systems.  相似文献

Lignins in general have been extensively studied, while beech wood lignin in particular is rarely researched. In the present work, Organosolv isolated lignin from beech wood (OBL) has been characterized. The isolation was done by two methods: (a) by using sulfuric acid at 170 °C and a reaction time of 120 min and (b) at a temperature of 180 °C for 240 min. A range of analytical methods were applied including elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV–Vis, 31P NMR, SEC, Pyrolysis-GC/MS and HPLC to gain information about establish the purity, structure, molecular weight, thermal behavior and to determine carbohydrate residues according to the NREL protocol. FT-IR and UV–Vis spectra of OBL revealed expected typical absorptions for lignins. NREL analysis presented a carbohydrate-free lignin fraction which has not been achieved to date. TGA and DSC are used to study the thermal behavior of the isolated lignins and showed a relatively low glass transition temperatures (Tg: 123 °C) and decomposition temperatures of 348 and 381 °C. The pyrograms generated from the pyrolysis–GC/MS at 550 °C consisted mainly of fragments of syringyl, guaiacyl and hydroxyphenyl units, thereby confirming the results of the NMR analysis. Our findings support Organolsolv as an efficient method to isolate pure lignin fractions from beech wood with practical value in industry.  相似文献

To obtain a reference status prior to cultivation of genetically modified oilseed rape (OSR, Brassica napus L.) in Switzerland, the occurrence of feral OSR was monitored along transportation routes and at processing sites. The focus was set on the detection of (transgenic) OSR along railway lines from the Swiss borders with Italy and France to the respective oilseed processing factories in Southern and Northern Switzerland (Ticino and region of Basel). A monitoring concept was developed to identify sites of largest risk of escape of genetically modified plants into the environment in Switzerland. Transport spillage of OSR seeds from railway goods cars particularly at risk hot spots such as switch yards and (un)loading points but also incidental and continuous spillage were considered. All OSR plants, including their hybridization partners which were collected at the respective monitoring sites were analyzed for the presence of transgenes by real-time PCR. On sampling lengths each of 4.2 and 5.7 km, respectively, 461 and 1,574 plants were sampled in Ticino and the region of Basel. OSR plants were found most frequently along the routes to the oilseed facilities, and in larger amounts on risk hot spots compared to sites of random sampling. At three locations in both monitored regions, transgenic B. napus line GT73 carrying the glyphosate resistance transgenes gox and CP4 epsps were detected (Ticino, 22 plants; in the region of Basel, 159).  相似文献

Floods and droughts are natural phenomena for which the risks of occurrence are likely to continue to grow. Increasing levels of exposure and insufficient adaptive capacity are among the factors responsible for the rising vulnerability. The former is conditioned by anthropopressure (e.g., economic development of flood–prone areas) and adverse effects of climate change; scenarios for future climates indicate the possibility of amplified water–related extremes. This article presents the current situation of coping with extreme hydrological events within the pressure–state–response framework. Among promising response strategies, the role of forecast and warning, and of watershed management are reviewed. Sample success stories and lessons learnt related to hydrological extremes are given and policy implications discussed.  相似文献
