Incineration of cellulose waste filter from acrylic industry showed the presence of 13–16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the list of 16 priority pollutants with an airflow rate of 1, 2, 3, and 4 L min???1 in laboratory scale quartz tube vertical incinerator at 700–1,000°C at an interval of 100°C. The amount of total 16 PAHs increases with the increase in temperature with airflow rate of 1 L min???1 and was found to be 9.4 times at 1,000°C than at 700°C. Studies at 800–1,000°C showed the decrease in total 16 PAHs with increase in airflow rate from 1 to 2 L min???1. The amount of total 16 PAHs increases at 700, 800, and 1,000°C with increase in airflow rate from 2–4 L min???1. At 900°C, amount of 16 PAHs decreases with increase in flow rate from 1 to 3 and increases at 4 L min???1. The lesser amount of 2A PAHs was found at 700–900°C with airflow rates of 1–3 L min???1, while less amount of 2B PAHs was found at 700°C and 800°C (with airflow rate of 1–2 L min???1), at 900°C (with airflow rate of 1–3 L min???1) and at 1,000°C (with airflow rate of 3 L min???1). This study presents an assessment of the performance of the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) photochemical model in forecasting daily PM2.5 (particulate matter < or = 2.5 microm in aerodynamic diameter) mass concentrations over most of the eastern United States for a 2-yr period from June 14, 2006 to June 13, 2008. Model predictions were compared with filter-based and continuous measurements of PM2.5 mass and species on a seasonal and regional basis. Results indicate an underprediction of PM2.5 mass in spring and summer, resulting from under-predictions in sulfate and total carbon concentrations. During winter, the model overpredicted mass concentrations, mostly at the urban sites in the northeastern United States because of overpredictions in unspeciated PM2.5 (suggesting possible overestimation of primary emissions) and sulfate. A comparison of observed and predicted diurnal profiles of PM2.5 mass at five sites in the domain showed significant discrepancies. Sulfate diurnal profiles agreed in shape across three sites in the southern portion of the domain but differed at two sites in the northern portion of the domain. Predicted organic carbon (OC) profiles were similar in shape to mass, suggesting that discrepancies in mass profiles probably resulted from the underprediction in OC. The diurnal profiles at a highly urbanized site in New York City suggested that the overpredictions at that site might be resulting from overpredictions during the morning and evening hours, displayed as sharp peaks in predicted profiles. Source apportionment of fine particles (PM2.5, particulate matter < 2 microm in aerodynamic diameter) is important to identify the source categories that are responsible for the concentrations observed at a particular receptor. Although receptor models have been used to do source apportionment, they do not fully take into account the chemical reactions (including photochemical reactions) involved in the formation of secondary fine particles. Secondary fine particles are formed from photochemical and other reactions involving precursor gases, such as sulfur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, ammonia, and volatile organic compounds. This paper presents the results of modeling work aimed at developing a source apportionment of primary and secondary PM2.5. On-road mobile source and point source inventories for the state of Tennessee were estimated and compiled. The national emissions inventory for the year 1999 was used for the other states. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Models3/Community Multi-Scale Air Quality modeling system was used for the photochemical/secondary particulate matter modeling. The modeling domain consisted of a nested 36-12-4-km domain. The 4-km domain covered the entire state of Tennessee. The episode chosen for the modeling runs was August 29 to September 9, 1999. This paper presents the approach used and the results from the modeling and attempts to quantify the contribution of major source categories, such as the on-road mobile sources (including the fugitive dust component) and coal-fired power plants, to observed PM2.5 concentrations in Tennessee. The results of this work will be helpful in policy issues targeted at designing control strategies to meet the PM2.5 National Ambient Air Quality Standards in Tennessee. 相似文献

The effects of gamma-irradiated sludge on the growth and yield of rice (Oryza sativa L. var. GR-3) in pot cultures have been studied. Compared to plants grown only in soil, shoot length, root length, fresh weight, dry weight, total proteins, total soluble sugars, starch and chlorophyll content of plants grown in soil supplemented with unirradiated or gamma-irradiated sludge were found to be significantly increased. Irradiation of sludge significantly stimulated the linear growth of shoot and root systems as well as fresh and dry weights of plants, compared to those grown in soil containing unirradiated sludge. There was also an improvement in the grain yield (weight of seed) when plants were grown in soil supplemented with irradiated sludge. The results obtained suggest that the gamma-irradiated sewage sludge can be beneficially recycled for agricultural uses. 相似文献

The present communication reports the effect of various carboxylic and amino acids on the uptake and translocation of root-absorbed Cd by maize (Zea mays). Statistically significant increases in Cd accumulation in various plant tissues with increasing supplementation of organic acids suggested the existence of Cd-organic acid interaction in soil-rhizosphere environment of the plant. This paper describes the development and evaluation of a computationally efficient semi-empirical photochemical model that can be used as a screening tool to obtain quick estimates of the effect of a large number of VOC and NOx emission control strategies on ozone concentrations. Selected control strategies can subsequently be examined with a more complex model. The model is one component of an ozone management system, the regional ozone decision model (RODM), designed to examine the costs and environmental consequences of alternate ozone abatement strategies.The model was developed by systematic simplification of a detailed photochemical model. At each step of the simplification, the simplified model was tested against observations and against results from the detailed model. The first major simplification was the introduction of a highly parameterized chemistry mechanism, originally developed by Azzi et al. (1992 Proc. 11th Int. Clean Air Conf., 4th Regional IUAPPA Conf.). This modification resulted in a factor of 5 improvement in the computational efficiency of the model. The model with the simplified chemistry was then tested by applying it to a photochemical oxidant episode in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Further improvements in computational speed and efficiency were obtained by uncoupling the chemistry from the transport of VOC and NOx. 相似文献

The performance characteristics of a solar air heater can effectively be improved by providing artificial roughness in the form of protrusions and dimples of various shapes, sizes, and orientations on the underside of heated surface. An extensive literature review on artificial roughness elements has been carried and the correlations developed for heat transfer and friction factor for roughened solar air collector have been discussed and presented in this paper. The performance parameter has also been computed and compared with various kinds and shapes of roughness geometries using correlations developed by various investigators.
