Summary. Evidence is presented that pyrrolizidine alkaloid acquired
by Utetheisa ornatrix (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae) as a larva
from Crotalaria foodplants is incorporated in part into the scales
of the adult. A single forewing of a male or female moth may contain in
the order of 6 to 13 g monocrotaline in its scale cover or about 1 to 2%
of the moths systemic monocrotaline content. Based on estimates of the number
of scales per forewing, the monocrotaline content of individual scales is calculated
to be in the order of 0.1 and 0.2 ng monocrotaline per male and female scale,
respectively. This amounts to concentrations of about 1 and 3%, values roughly at
a par with the average systemic concentration (0.5-0.6%) previously determined
for monocrotaline in Utetheisa. It is argued that the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloid
in the moths scale coating could account for the promptness with which adult Utetheisa are
rejected by spiders. It is suggested further that chemical impregnation of scales with substances
deterrent to predators may be more widespread among insects than generally assumed. 相似文献

The present paper aims at investigating how changes in canopy structure and species physiology associated with the abandonment of mountain meadows and pastures affect their net photosynthesis. For this purpose, a multi-layer vegetation–atmosphere transfer (VAT) model is employed, which explicitly takes into account the structural and functional properties of the various canopy components and species. Three sites differing in land use are investigated, a meadow, a pasture and an abandoned area. Model simulations agree reasonably with measured canopy net photosynthetic rates, the meadow featuring the highest daily net photosynthesis, followed by the pasture and, finally, the abandoned area. A detailed process analysis suggests this ranking to be mainly due to bulk canopy physiology, which decreases from the meadow to the pasture and the abandoned area, reflecting species composition and species-specific photosynthetic capacities. Differences between the canopies with regard to canopy structure are found to be of minor importance. The amounts of green, photosynthetically active plant matter are too similar at the three sites to be a major source of variation in net photosynthesis. Large differences exist between the canopies with regard to the amount of photosynthetically inactive phytoelements. Even though a model analysis showed them to be potentially important, most of them are accumulated close to the ground surface, where they exert little influence on canopy net photosynthesis. 相似文献

Misuse of alcohol is a significant public health problem, potentially resulting in unintentional injuries, motor vehicle crashes,
drownings, and, perhaps of greatest concern, serious acts of violence, including assaults, rapes, suicides, and homicides.
Although previous research establishes a link between alcohol consumption increased levels of violence, studies relating the
density of alcohol outlets (e.g., restaurants, bars, liquor stores) and the likelihood of violent crime have been less common.
In this paper we test for such a relationship at the small area level, using data from 79 neighborhoods in the city of Minneapolis,
Minnesota. We adopt a fully Bayesian point of view using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) computational methods as available
in the popular and freely available WinBUGS language. Our models control for important covariates (e.g., neighborhood racial
heterogeneity, age heterogeneity) and also account for spatial association in unexplained variability using conditionally
autoregressive (CAR) random effects. Our results indicate a significant positive relationship between alcohol outlet density
and violent crime, while also permitting easy mapping of neighborhood-level predicted and residual values, the former useful
for intervention in the most at-risk neighborhoods and the latter potentially useful in identifying covariates still missing

The numerical evaluation of selected PCB congener (28, 118, 153, 180) transport over the Northern Hemisphere is carried out for 1996 using MSCE-POP model. This model is a multicompartment three-dimensional one and includes various environmental media such as the atmosphere, soil, vegetation, seawater, and sea ice. The spatial resolution is 2.5 degrees x2.5 degrees for all media except marine one (1.25 degrees x1.25 degrees ). The main model output information is deposition fluxes, spatial distribution of concentrations in environmental media, pathways and source-receptor relationships. Calculation results are analysed for the whole hemisphere and the Arctic region. In particular, this gives an opportunity to estimate the contributions of individual emission source groups to the Arctic pollution. Current design concepts for low-/intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal in many countries involve emplacement underground in a cementitious repository. The highly alkaline groundwaters at Maqarin, Jordan, are a good analogue for the cementitious pore waters that will be present within such a repository. A geochemical modelling study of these groundwaters has been carried out in order to test the applicability of equilibrium models in geochemical programs and their associated thermodynamic databases in such hyperalkaline conditions. This was achieved by comparison of elemental solubilities and speciations predicted by the programs with observations in the natural system. Five organisations took part in the study: AEA Technology, U.K.; Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden; MBT Tecnología Ambiental, Spain; Nagra, Switzerland; and SKB, Sweden. The modelling study was coordinated by the University of Berne.The results of the study showed good agreement between the predictions of the programs employed. Comparison of the observed solids with those predicted by the models has allowed limited validation of the databases. The results for U and Se are presented here. 相似文献

The theoretical basis for matrix diffusion in fractured rocks and the methodology for the determination of diffusion coefficients in the laboratory are well established. One significant problem, however, remains in that it is difficult to quantify the degree of sample disturbance affecting the geometrical, geophysical and hydraulic properties of the rock matrix. A new technique, with in situ rock impregnation with resin, for examining the diffusion-accessible rock matrix has been developed and successfully adopted to the rock matrix behind a water-conducting fracture in host crystalline rocks at Nagra's Grimsel Test Site in Switzerland and JNC's Kamaishi In Situ Test Site in Japan. In line with the results of a large number of natural analogue and laboratory studies, the existence of an in situ interconnected pore network was substantiated. Matrix porosities determined on the laboratory samples from both the sites are 1.5-3 times higher than in situ values, irrespective of the technique applied. On the Grimsel granodiorite matrix, matrix porosity existing in situ and artefacts of stress release and physical disturbance, induced by sampling and sample preparation, were clearly distinguished, allowing in situ porosity to be quantified. Laboratory work with conventional techniques tends to overestimate the porosity of the rock matrix, hence leading to an overestimation of in situ matrix diffusion. The implications of these differences to a repository performance assessment are assessed with a couple of examples from existing assessments, and recommendations for future approaches to the examination of in situ matrix porosity are made. 相似文献

Global freshwater resources are being increasingly polluted and depleted, threatening sustainable development and human and ecosystem health. Utilizing case studies from 4 different watersheds in the United States, Japan, Switzerland, and Brazil, this paper identifies the most relevant sustainability deficits and derives general vectors for more sustainable water management. As a consequence of the demographic and economic developments experienced in the last few decades, each watershed has suffered declines in water quality, streamflow and biotic resources. However, the extent and the cultural perception of these water-related problems vary substantially in the different watersheds, leading to specific water-management strategies. In industrialized countries, exemplified by the US, Switzerland, and Japan, these strategies have primarily consisted of finance- and energy-intensive technologies, allowing these countries to meet water requirements while minimizing human health risks. But, from a sustainability point of view, such strategies, relying on limited natural resources, are not long-term solutions. For newly industrialized countries such as Brazil, expensive technologies for water management are often not economically feasible, thus limiting the extent to which newly industrialized and developing countries can utilize the expertise offered by the industrialized world. Sustainable water management has to be achieved by a common learning process involving industrialized, newly industrialized, and developing countries, following general sustainability guidelines as exemplified in this paper. 相似文献

A study was conducted to investigate the capability of nine plant species to promote the degradation of pyrene in soil. The test method allowed for analysis of the entire sample of soil. More pyrene was degraded in the presence of roots of all nine species than in unplanted soil. Within approximately 8 weeks, as much as 74% of the pyrene disappeared from vegetated soil compared to 40% or less from unplanted soil. The data suggest that some of the test species may be especially useful for phytoremediation of soils contaminated with PAHs. 相似文献
