As a renewable energy source, the use of forest biomass for electricity generation is advantageous in comparison with fossil fuels; however, the activity of forest biomass power plants causes adverse impacts, affecting particularly neighbouring communities. The main objective of this study is to estimate the effects of the activity of forest biomass power plants on the welfare of two groups of stakeholders, namely local residents and the general population. To this end, we apply two stated preference methods: contingent valuation and discrete choice experiments, respectively. The former method was applied to estimate the minimum compensation residents of neighbouring communities of two forest biomass power plants in Portugal would be willing to accept. The latter method was applied among the general population to estimate their willingness to pay to avoid specific environmental impacts. The results show that the presence of the selected facilities affects individuals’ well-being. On the other hand, in the discrete choice experiments conducted among the general population all impacts considered were valued, in particular odour and fauna and flora impacts. The results of this study stress the importance of performing an equity analysis of the welfare effects on different groups of stakeholders from the installation of forest biomass power plants, as their effects on welfare are location and impact specific. Policy makers should take into account the views of all stakeholders either directly or indirectly involved when deciding crucial issues regarding the sitting of new forest biomass power plants, in order to achieve an efficient and equitable outcome. 相似文献

The effects of a sewage effluent with no treatment on the mesozooplankton structure and the environmental quality were evaluated
in the Bahía Blanca Estuary, during June to November 1995. The highest values of particulate organic matter, nutrients and
specially phosphate, were observed in the effluent discharge zone. In addition, taxa richness, mesozooplankton abundance and
Shannon diversity values were lower in the sewage discharge area compared with the less polluted area. Eurytemora americana and Acartia tonsa as well as larvae of Balanus glandula, Neohelice granulata and Spionidae were found in the discharge area with lower densities. The detailed study of the fetal cardiac anatomy in the first trimester of pregnancy by means of ultrasound, transvaginally or transabdominally, is feasible and remains a safe procedure provided thermal and mechanical indices are taken into account. Optimal time for successful imaging of the four chambers and great arteries in early gestation appears to be between 13 to 14 weeks. In experienced hands, first-trimester fetal echocardiography is accurate in detecting major structural cardiac abnormalities and yields a high negative predictive value. Thus, in a clinical setting, it can be offered to families considered to be ‘at risk’ of cardiac defects (e.g. those with previous family history or when fetal nuchal translucency is increased) and can be a powerful tool to reassure families regarding normality of major cardiac structures and connections. However, the early detection of an important structural abnormality (chromosomally normal or not) may be associated with a high termination rate if this is an acceptable option. The high prevalence of associated chromosomal and extracardiac abnormalities for many of the high-risk families, who may benefit from this approach, cannot be ignored. Therefore, fetal heart scanning in the first trimester should be performed in conjunction with detailed first-trimester obstetric scanning. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

In this work a model intercomparison between RAMS and ETA models is carried out, with the aim of evaluating the quality and accuracy of these mesoscale models in reproducing the time evolution of the meteorology in real complex terrain. This is of great importance not only for meteorological forecast but also for air quality assessment. Numerical simulations are performed to reproduce the mean variables' fields and to compare them with measurements collected during the field campaign TRACT. The domain covers the Rhine valley and surrounding mountainous region and we consider a time period of two days. Results from simulations are compared to observations relative to ground stations and radiosoundings. A qualitative analysis is joined to a quantitative estimation of some reference statistical indexes. Both RAMS and ETA models performances are satisfactory when compared to the measured data and also their relative agreement is good. The mean variable fields are reproduced with a satisfactory degree of reliability, even if the simulated profiles are not able to describe the largest fluctuations of the variables. At the surface stations, the best agreement between predictions and observations is obtained for the wind velocity, while the quality of the results is lower for temperature and humidity. 相似文献

The main objectives of this work focus, firstly, on a review of the current existent methodologies to estimate air quality modelling uncertainty, and, secondly, in the preparation of guidelines for modelling uncertainty estimation, which can be used by local and regional authorities responsible for air quality management. From the application exercise, it was concluded that it is possible to define a subset of statistical parameters able to reproduce the general uncertainties estimation. Concerning the quality indicators defined by EU directives, the results show that the legislated uncertainty estimation measures are ambiguous and inadequate in several aspects, mainly in what concerns the error measures for hourly and daily indicators based on the highest observed concentration. A relative error at the percentile correspondent to the allowed number of exceedances of the limit value was suggested and tested, showing that is a more robust and appropriate parameter for model performance evaluation. 相似文献

The aim of this article is to shed new light on which dimensions compose sustainable purchase intention (SPI) with the purpose of understanding what moves consumers to a potentially more sustainable behaviour. Even though several studies have researched which factors influence consumer’s intention to buy in a more sustainable way, no comparable research in consumer behaviour was found studying these dimensions in a triple bottom line perspective (profit, people, and planet) that could also provide future corporate and academic applications. Therefore, this article proposes a new construct – Consumers’ Perception on SPI, defined using the C-OAR-SE procedure and measured using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis using two different samples. In-depth interviews and online survey to actual consumers of sustainable products were undertaken in partnership with a sustainable project using its database, guaranteeing that real consumers’ perceptions were gathered for this study. The construct is proposed with two dimensions (measured by nine items): Accessibility (including facets such as product lower pricing, availability in stores, and being sold within a convenient proximity to home) and Trust (including consumers needs such as: to get to know and trust products through understanding the labels; to have had good experiences in the past or simply to have new trial opportunities). This work proposes an approach to simulate wind flow fields around an urban environment with the aim of evaluating the potential impact of buildings on the general wind patterns and power production using the current generation of commercial wind turbines. The simulation process was performed with the aid of accessible computational tools that can potentially render the proposed procedure applicable in other cases of interest. The roughness of the urban environment was defined as the association of roughness map, topography, and an alternative process for obtaining the volumetry of buildings. A case study was conducted in a region located at the district of Boa Viagem (Recife-PE) for assessing the applicability of the approach. Scenarios were designed in order to simulate wind flow patterns and pre-identify sites that have suitable wind energy potential for electric power production by investigating the combination of wind speed magnitude and turbulence intensity. From the results obtained, it was possible to identify zones of potential wind sources that are not detected in classical wind atlas probably due to the influence of the built environment on local wind flow patterns. 相似文献
