Quantification and characterization of medical waste generated in healthcare facilities (HCFs) in a developing African nation has been conducted to provide insights into existing waste collection and disposal approaches, so as to provide sustainable avenues for institutional policy improvement. The study, in Ibadan city, Nigeria, entailed a representative classification of nearly 400 healthcare facilities, from 11 local government areas (LGA) of Ibadan, into tertiary, secondary, primary, and diagnostic HCFs, of which, 52 HCFs were strategically selected. Primary data sources included field measurements, waste sampling and analysis and a questionnaire, while secondary information sources included public and private records from hospitals and government ministries. Results indicate secondary HCFs generate the greatest amounts of medical waste (mean of 10,238 kg/day per facility) followed by tertiary, primary and diagnostic HCFs, respectively. Characterised waste revealed that only approximately 3% was deemed infectious and highlights opportunities for composting, reuse and recycling. Furthermore, the management practices in most facilities expose patients, staff, waste handlers and the populace to unnecessary health risks. This study proffers recommendations to include (i) a need for sustained cooperation among all key actors (government, hospitals and waste managers) in implementing a safe and reliable medical waste management strategy, not only in legislation and policy formation but also particularly in its monitoring and enforcement and (ii) an obligation for each HCF to ensure a safe and hygienic system of medical waste handling, segregation, collection, storage, transportation, treatment and disposal, with minimal risk to handlers, public health and the environment.  相似文献

Nest protection through egg relocation from natural nests into protected hatcheries is a common practice used at rookeries around the world to increase hatchling recruitment into sea turtle populations. However, rarely have the impacts of this practice on hatchling recruitment and quality been assessed. This study investigated the influences of the thermal nest environment of olive ridley turtles Lepidochelys olivacea on emergence success and quality of hatchlings of hatchery nests in Alas Purwo National Park, East Java, Indonesia (2009 and 2010 nesting seasons). Nest temperatures above 34?°C for at least 3 consecutive days during incubation in the hatchery resulted in decreases in emergence success and locomotor performance of hatchlings. The use of the hatchery is recommended due to extremely high predation rate of nests left on the beach; however, altering hatchery management practice by spacing nests one meter apart and providing shade should improve hatchery outcomes now and into the future.  相似文献

The amount of artificial habitat (termed ??artificial reef??, AR) in marine systems is rapidly increasing, yet the effect of most types of AR on reef communities remains unknown. We examined the role of well-established vessel-reefs in structuring coral reef fish assemblages by comparing assemblages on 7 World War II wrecks (>65?years old) to those on interspersed coral patch reefs of comparable size in a tropical lagoon. Fish abundance, species richness, diversity and feeding guild structure on wrecks were similar to natural reefs; however, species composition differed between the two reef types (R?=?0.189?C0.341, average dissimilarity: 67.3?C68.8?%). Despite being more species-rich and diverse, fish assemblages on larger wrecks were less similar to assemblages on their adjacent natural reefs than smaller wrecks. Wrecks may also have affected fish abundance on adjacent natural reefs, with reefs adjacent to larger wrecks supporting higher abundances than reefs adjacent to smaller wrecks. Our results indicate that increases in vessel-reef habitat may not greatly affect reef fish assemblage parameters, but may affect the relative abundances of particular species.  相似文献

Locomotion performance plays a vital role in determining hatchling green turtle Chelonia mydas survival in the first few hours after emerging from their nests as hatchlings crawl and swim the gauntlet of predators before reaching the relative safety of the open ocean. Previous laboratory based constant incubation experiments found incubation temperature to influence the size and swimming performance of hatchling green turtles. Here we examine the morphology and crawling and swimming performance of hatchling green turtles as they emerge from nests on Heron Island rookery in the southern Great Barrier Reef to test the hypothesis that nest temperature in the field can influence these attributes. We found inter-nest differences in hatchling mass and dimensions, and that hatchling mass was not correlated with nest temperature. However, hatchlings from warmer nests had smaller carapace dimensions than hatchlings from cool nests suggesting that more yolk was converted to hatchling tissue during embryonic development in cool nests. There was considerable intra- and inter-nest variation in both crawling and swimming performance of hatchlings. Hatchlings from cool nests tended to be faster crawlers than hatchlings from warm nests, but the thrust produced during swimming was not correlated with nest temperature. During the 4 h swimming trial, hatchlings swimming effort decreased significantly during the first 3 h but swimming effort remained relatively constant for the last 1 h. Individual hatchling crawling and swimming performances were not correlated with each other. Antibiotic resistance analysis (ARA) was used to determine if enterococci of human origin were present in a stream (Spout Run) that passes through a rural nonsewered community (Millwood, VA). Millwood consists of 82 homes, all served by individual septic systems, and Spout Run drains a 5,800-ha karst topography watershed that contains large populations of livestock and wildlife. Periodic monitoring by state regulatory officials had resulted in Spout Run being placed on the Virginia impaired stream list and Millwood being categorized as an at-risk community. Stream samples were collected monthly and analyzed for fecal coliforms and enterococci (May 1999-May 2000); ARA was performed on enterococci stream isolates on a quarterly basis. All 117 stream samples were positive for fecal coliforms, and 32% exceeded the Virginia recreational water standard (1,000 fecal coliforms/100 mL). A library of 1,174 known source Enterococcus isolate antibiotic resistance profiles was constructed, and yielded correct classification rates of 94.6% for 203 human isolates, 93.7% for 734 livestock isolates, and 87.8% for 237 wildlife isolates. Antibiotic resistance analysis of 2,012 enterococcal isolates recovered from stream samples indicated isolates of human origin appeared throughout the stream as it passed through Millwood, with a yearly average of approximately 10% human, 40% wildlife, and 50% livestock. There were no human origin isolates in samples collected upstream from Millwood, and the percent human origin isolates declined downstream from Millwood. While a human signature was found in Spout Run, it was small compared with the proportion of isolates from livestock and wildlife.  相似文献

The self-sealing/self-healing (SS/SH) barrier concept is based on the principle that two or more parent materials placed in vertical or horizontal layers will react at their interfaces to form insoluble reaction products. These products constitute a seamless impermeable seal, which is resistant to the transmission of leachate and contaminants. A SS/SH liner formulation was developed in the laboratory and demonstrated at the Sudokwon landfill site in South Korea. Laboratory testing results indicated that a seal with a hydraulic conductivity less than 10(-9) m/s formed after two to four weeks of curing at room temperature, and the seal healed itself after it was fractured. The use of the soil from the Sudokwon landfill site instead of sand as the matrix of the parent materials in the SS/SH liner retarded the sealing and healing of the seal, but did not show an obvious effect on the overall sealing and healing capacity of the seal at early stages. The construction and installation of the field demonstration SS/SH liner were carried out in the same way as for a soil cement liner. The quality of the liner was ensured by the enforcement of quality analysis/quality control procedures during installation. A single sealed ring infiltration test was performed on the field demonstration liner 36 days after the installation was completed. The measurement of water infiltration rate indicated that the liner healed after it was fractured. However, the long-term sealing and healing capacity needs to be further investigated.  相似文献

Excessive production of methane has been observed at some remediation sites following the addition of organic hydrogen donors such as (emulsified) oils/lecithin, sugars, and conventional carbon + zero‐valent iron (ZVI) amendments. This is due to the fact that methanogens are commonly the most ubiquitous indigenous microbes in anoxic aquifer settings, and, under enriched environmental conditions, methanogens replicate every one to two hours (whereas Dehalococcoides spp., e.g., double in 24–48 hr). Hence, methanogens often bloom and dominate the microbial ecosystem following the addition of remedial amendments, thereby liberating large amounts of methane gas. There are at least three important consequences of this response:
  1. By utilizing hydrogen, the methanogens compete with dechlorinating microbes, thus making inefficient use of the remedial amendment (just 20 ppm methane in groundwater represents an approximate 30 percent “waste” of added fermentable substrate (i.e., hydrogen donor)—this is a common and tangible detriment);
  2. Methanogens can methylate heavy metals and their rapid growth consumes alkalinity, while generating acidity, thereby facilitating multiple potential mechanisms for creating secondary contaminant issues (i.e., arsenic plumes); and
  3. Elevated methane concentrations can exceed current and pending regulations of <10 to <28 ppm methane in groundwater and/or 0.5 percent by volume methane in soil gas (e.g., 10 percent of the lower explosive limit) and/or indoor air (methane is flammable between 5 percent and 15 percent by volume) and this will induce migration of contaminant vapors potentially causing indoor air issues.
Considering the recent guidelines for indoor air published by the US Environmental Protection Agency, it is increasingly important to prevent excessive methanogenesis associated with remedial actions. From a regulatory perspective, public safety issues are paramount; from a property re‐use or real estate (brownfield) developers’ perspective, project delays are costly and can jeopardize an entire program. The use of antimethanogenic compounds as inhibitors of protein biosynthesis and the activity of enzyme systems unique to Archaea (i.e., methanogens) during in situ remedial action can improve contaminant removal while offering safer, more efficacious treatment, simply by impeding the methanogenic bacteria's ability to proliferate and out compete desired bacterial communities (e.g., Dehalococcoides spp.). ©2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill exposed common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Barataria Bay, Louisiana to heavy oiling that caused increased mortality and chronic disease and impaired reproduction in surviving dolphins. We conducted photographic surveys and veterinary assessments in the decade following the spill. We assigned a prognostic score (good, fair, guarded, poor, or grave) for each dolphin to provide a single integrated indicator of overall health, and we examined temporal trends in prognostic scores. We used expert elicitation to quantify the implications of trends for the proportion of the dolphins that would recover within their lifetime. We integrated expert elicitation, along with other new information, in a population dynamics model to predict the effects of observed health trends on demography. We compared the resulting population trajectory with that predicted under baseline (no spill) conditions. Disease conditions persisted and have recently worsened in dolphins that were presumably exposed to DWH oil: 78% of those assessed in 2018 had a guarded, poor, or grave prognosis. Dolphins born after the spill were in better health. We estimated that the population declined by 45% (95% CI 14–74) relative to baseline and will take 35 years (95% CI 18–67) to recover to 95% of baseline numbers. The sum of annual differences between baseline and injured population sizes (i.e., the lost cetacean years) was 30,993 (95% CI 6607–94,148). The population is currently at a minimum point in its recovery trajectory and is vulnerable to emerging threats, including planned ecosystem restoration efforts that are likely to be detrimental to the dolphins’ survival. Our modeling framework demonstrates an approach for integrating different sources and types of data, highlights the utility of expert elicitation for indeterminable input parameters, and emphasizes the importance of considering and monitoring long-term health of long-lived species subject to environmental disasters. Article impact statement: Oil spills can have long-term consequences for the health of long-lived species; thus, effective restoration and monitoring are needed.  相似文献

We present here a method to integrate geologic, topographic, and land-cover data in a geographic information system to provide a fine-scale, spatially explicit prediction of sediment yield to support management applications. The method is fundamentally qualitative but can be quantified using preexisting sediment-yield data, where available, to verify predictions using other independent data sets. In the 674-km2 Sespe Creek watershed of southern California, 30 unique “geomorphic landscape units” (GLUs, defined by relatively homogenous areas of geology, hillslope gradient, and land cover) provide a framework for discriminating relative rates of sediment yield across this landscape. Field observations define three broad groupings of GLUs that are well-associated with types, relative magnitudes, and rates of erosion processes. These relative rates were then quantified using sediment-removal data from nearby debris basins, which allow relatively low-precision but robust calculations of both local and whole-watershed sediment yields, based on the key assumption that minimal sediment storage throughout most of the watershed supports near-equivalency of long-term rates of hillslope sediment production and watershed sediment yield. The accuracy of these calculations can be independently assessed using geologically inferred uplift rates and integrated suspended sediment measurements from mainstem Sespe Creek, which indicate watershed-averaged erosion rates between about 0.6–1.0 mm year?1 and corresponding sediment yields of about 2 × 103 t km?2 year?1. A spatially explicit representation of sediment production is particularly useful in a region where wildfires, rapid urban development, and the downstream delivery of upstream sediment loads are critical drivers of both geomorphic processes and land-use management.  相似文献

Hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) generated from C&D debris landfills has emerged as a major environmental concern due to odor problems and possible health impacts to landfill employees and surrounding residents. Research was performed to evaluate the performance of various cover materials as control measures for H(2)S emissions from C&D debris landfills. Twelve laboratory-scale simulated landfill columns containing gypsum drywall were operated under anaerobic conditions to promote H(2)S production. Five different cover materials were placed on top of the waste inside duplicate columns: (1) sandy soil, (2) sandy soil amended with lime, (3) clayey soil, (4) fine concrete (particle size less than 2.5 cm), and (5) coarse concrete (particle size greater than 2.5 cm). No cover was placed on two of the columns, which were used as controls. H(2)S concentrations measured from the middle of the waste layer ranged from 50,000 to 150,000 ppm. The different cover materials demonstrated varying H(2)S removal efficiencies. The sandy soil amended with lime and the fine concrete were the most effective for the control of H(2)S emissions. Both materials exhibited reduction efficiencies greater than 99%. The clayey and sandy soils exhibited lower reduction efficiencies, with average removal efficiencies of 65% and 30%, respectively. The coarse concrete was found to be the least efficient material as a result of its large particle size.  相似文献
