There are fears that global warming will lead to degradation of peatlands, higher emissions of greenhouse gases from peat, and accelerated warming. Anaerobic decomposition of organic soils produces methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas. Two peat bogs differing in mean annual temperature, Velke Darko (VD, Czech Republic, 7.2 °C), and Stor Åmyran (SA, Sweden, 4.0 °C), were selected for a comparative study of how organic soils in different climatic zones will respond to warmer and drier conditions. Twenty peat cores from each bog were incubated in growth chambers. Under present-day summer conditions, VD produced 14 times more CH4 than SA. Two different warming scenarios were used. Peat-core replicates were kept at temperatures of 11 versus 16 °C, and 11 versus 22 °C. From 11 to 16 °C, the CH4 production slightly decreased at SA, and slightly increased at VD. From 11 to 22 °C, the CH4 production increased 9 times at SA, but slightly decreased at VD. After an 8-month incubation, peat cores under drying conditions (water table at ?14 cm) were compared to samples with original water table (?2 cm). Drying conditions led to a steeper reduction in CH4 production at VD, compared to SA. The CH4 production decreased more than 100 times at VD. Then, the combined effect of simultaneous warming and drying at 11 and 22 °C was studied. We did not find any significant effect of interactions between increasing temperature and decreasing water table level. This paper presents a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) of a trade-off between salmon and hydropower production in the Ume/Vindel River, northern Sweden. A distinctive element of this analysis is that estimated changes in resource conditions are based on detailed river-specific data. A salmon population model was used to develop the scenario and a novel willingness to pay (WTP) question, which caters for uncertainty in a different manner, provided an interval estimate. Non-use values are the major contributors to the benefit (96–517 millions of Swedish kronor (MSEK)) of increasing the stock of wild salmon. Sensitivity analysis suggests that the opportunity costs in terms of lost electricity are typically higher than the estimated benefits. 相似文献

A three-dimensional chemical transport model (PMCAMx) is used to simulate PM mass and composition in the eastern United States for a July 2001 pollution episode. The performance of the model in this region is evaluated, taking advantage of the highly time and size-resolved PM and gas-phase data collected during the Pittsburgh Air Quality Study (PAQS). PMCAMx uses the framework of CAMx and detailed aerosol modules to simulate inorganic aerosol growth, aqueous-phase chemistry, secondary organic aerosol formation, nucleation, and coagulation. The model predictions are compared to hourly measurements of PM2.5 mass and composition at Pittsburgh, as well as to measurements from the AIRS and IMPROVE networks. The performance of the model for the major PM2.5 components (sulfate, ammonium, and organic carbon) is encouraging (fractional errors are in general smaller than 50%). Additional improvements are possible if the rainfall measurements are used instead of the meteorological model predictions. The modest errors in ammonium predictions and the lack of bias for the total (gas and particulate) ammonium suggest that the improved ammonia inventory used is reasonable. The significant errors in aerosol nitrate predictions are mainly due to difficulties in simulating the nighttime formation of nitric acid. The concentrations of elemental carbon (EC) in the urban areas are significantly overpredicted. This is a problem related to both the emission inventory but also the different EC measurement methods that have been used in the two measurement networks (AIRS and IMPROVE) and the actual development of the inventory. While the ability of the model to reproduce OC levels is encouraging, additional work is necessary to confirm that that this is due to the right reasons and not offsetting errors in the primary emissions and the secondary formation. The model performance against the semi-continuous measurements in Pittsburgh appears to be quite similar to its performance against daily average measurements in a wide range of stations across the Eastern US. This suggests that the skill of the model to reproduce the diurnal variability of PM2.5 and its major components is as good as its ability to reproduce the daily average values and also the significant value of high temporal resolution measurements for model evaluation. 相似文献

Responding to constantly more demanding European legislation, notably for electrical and electronic equipment, worn-out vehicles or hazardous substances, manufacturers have to develop End of Life (EoL) strategies. The challenge today is to assess which “product EoL process” would be profitable for an enterprise given the business model in place. Most of the Original Equipment Manufacturers recycle or subcontract reverse logistic and EoL treatments. Recycling is currently the most common solution but it is far from meeting the goals of Sustainable Development. We believe that, integrating constraints from EoL strategies into the early phases of design is one important aspect that needs to be improved. We are currently combining this idea with principles from concurrent engineering to develop design aids which permits designers to compare their products to “Remanufacturable Product Profiles”. However, conscious those EoL solutions often involve several strategies; it is now envisaged to develop tools to help designers make optimal decisions while designing a product considering 3R strategies: Reuse, Remanufacture and Recycle. In this paper, our vision of why and how to integrate EoL strategies in the early design phases is presented, and what tools to apply 3R strategies are envisaged, considering the evolving architecture of the product, and the translation of transversal information into design criteria. 相似文献

Sediment size and supply exert a dominant control on channel structure. We review the role of sediment supply in channel structure,
and how regional differences in sediment supply and landuse affect stream restoration priorities. We show how stream restoration
goals are best understood within a common fluvial geomorphology framework defined by sediment supply, storage, and transport.
Landuse impacts in geologically young landscapes with high sediment yields (e.g., coastal British Columbia) typically result
in loss of instream wood and accelerated sediment inputs from bank erosion, logging roads, hillslopes and gullies. In contrast,
northern Sweden and Finland are landscapes with naturally low sediment yields caused by low relief, resistant bedrock, and
abundant mainstem lakes that act as sediment traps. Landuse impacts involved extensive channel narrowing, removal of obstructions,
and bank armouring with boulders to facilitate timber floating, thereby reducing sediment supply from bank erosion while increasing
export through higher channel velocities. These contrasting landuse impacts have pushed stream channels in opposite directions
(aggradation versus degradation) within a phase-space defined by sediment transport and supply. Restoration in coastal British
Columbia has focused on reducing sediment supply (through bank and hillslope stabilization) and restoring wood inputs. In
contrast, restoration in northern Fennoscandia (Sweden and Finland) has focused on channel widening and removal of bank-armouring
boulders to increase sediment supply and retention. These contrasting restoration priorities illustrate the consequences of
divergent regional landuse impacts on sediment supply, and the utility of planning restoration activities within a mechanistic

在景观水平的管理中,为了保护具有代表性和连接成片的生境网络,以达到维持生物多样性的目的,就必须在不同规模上将保护、经营和生境恢复等几项工作有机结合.我们认为将自然和社会科学融为一体的两维缺陷分析方法是实施生物多样性政策的有效工具.这个工具把与生物相关的"水平"生态学问题与"垂直"的制度体制和其它社会问题有机结合考虑.以森林生物多样性为例,本文将演示如何将与生物多样性保护有关的生态学和制度等方面的问题综合考虑,从而促进整个区域发展的环境可持续性.尤其,我们用区域性缺陷分析方法,即先确定对"绿色基础设施"起功能性连接作用的重点森林类型和生境模型,以此作为工具进行"水平"缺陷分析.就"垂直"范围而论,通过鉴别政策实施中的体制性障碍我们指出社会科学如何用于在实际景观范围内评估生物多样性政策实施是否成功.研究表明,多学科间的合作方法能应用于其它各类环境,包括其它陆生生物和水生生态系统,在这些生态系统中,重要栖息地的连接性、对栖息地丧失的非线性响应,以及社会和经济问题在同一景观内交织在一起. 相似文献
