We applied a new version of the G’DAY ecosystem model to short-rotation plantations of Eucalyptus globulus growing under a Mediterranean climate in south-western Australia. The new version, that includes modified submodels for biomass production, water balance, litter and soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition, and soil inorganic N balance, was parameterised and applied to three experimental eucalypt sites (Mumballup, Darkan and Northcliffe) of contrasting productivity. With a common base set of parameter values, the model was able to correctly reproduce observed time series of soil water content, canopy leaf area index and stemwood data at the three sites. The model's ability to simulate soil N supply under forest plantations was tested by simulating N mineralisation at each of the three sites over the duration of the experiment (10 years). Simulated annual net N mineralisation in the litter and top 20 cm soil layer ranged from 50 to 170 kg N ha−1 across the sites as a result of differences in rates of litter production, SOM and litter decomposition, and microbial N immobilisation and (re-)mineralisation. Simulations of annual soil N mineralisation were similar to measured rates over a 3-year period, except for an overestimation in 1 year at Mumballup and 2 years at Darkan. Model results indicated the importance of fine root production and turnover for N supply. As plantations age, supply of N to trees increasingly originates from litter decomposition, while the contribution from decomposition of SOM decreases. Although major soil feedbacks associated with litter production, decomposition and N availability are adequately integrated into G’DAY, further work is required in some aspects of the model, including the utility of the C-allocation submodel over a wide range of site conditions and silvicultural treatments.  相似文献

An interlaboratory study was initiated to investigate consistency in reported concentrations of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs). Results are reported from the first phase of a study that examined the variability associated with different quantification methodologies, instrumentation and standards. Nine participating labs from seven countries quantified individual homolog groups, summation operator PCN (the sum of 2-8 chlorinated homologs), and selected congeners in two test solutions derived from Halowax 1014. The means of the reported summation operator PCN values were within less than 15% of the known concentrations of the two test solutions and the relative standard deviation among laboratories was 11%. However, the among laboratory variability was in the range 20-40% for individual PCN homologs and individual PCN congeners. These results suggest the need for additional interlaboratory studies and for the development of reference materials for PCN analysis. Future PCN interlaboratory comparison exercises are discussed that will utilize control materials and unknowns consisting of suitable environmental matrices.  相似文献

The capability of deposition networks in eastern Canada to resolve regional trends has been examined by Blanchard et al. (1996, Atmospheric Environment 30, 2539–2549). This paper extends the earlier methods to permit evaluation of the need for specific individual sites, comparison of additional network configurations, and consideration of more regions. Parameter estimates for the statistical model are improved by using monthly instead of annual data. For the regions that we examined, eliminating all provincial sites in eastern Canada would cause an increase of 1 to 6 years in the time required for reaching a 90% probabiility of detecting the expected future trends. The elimination of certain key provincial sites may increase the uncertainties in the determination of deposition isopleths of particular interest, such as the 20 kg ha−1 yr−1 contours. The statistical techniques presented here are quite general and can be extended to statistical tests or estimators other than those illustrated here.  相似文献

Ecological theory traditionally describes predator–prey interactions in terms of a law of mass action in which the prey mortality rate depends on the density of predators and prey. This simplifying assumption makes population-based models more tractable but ignores potentially important behaviors that characterize predator–prey dynamics. Here, we expand traditional predator–prey models by incorporating directed and random movements of both predators and prey. The model is based on theory originally developed to predict collision rates of molecules. The temporal and spatial dimensions of predators–prey encounters are determined by defining movement rules and the predator's field of vision. These biologically meaningful parameters can accommodate a broad range of behaviors within an analytically tractable framework suitable for population-based models. We apply the model to prey (juvenile salmon) migrating through a field of predators (piscivores) and find that traditional predator–prey models were not adequate to describe observations. Model parameters estimated from the survival of juvenile chinook salmon migrating through the Snake River in the northwestern United States are similar to estimates derived from independent approaches and data. For this system, we conclude that survival depends more on travel distance than travel time or migration velocity.  相似文献

In assessing the risks associated with climate change,downscaling has proven useful in linking surfacechanges, at scales relevant to decision making, tolarge-scale atmospheric circulation derived from GCMoutput. Stochastic downscaling is related to synopticclimatology, weather-typing approaches (classifyingcirculation patterns) such as the Lamb Weather Typesdeveloped for the United Kingdom (UK), the EuropeanGrosswetterlagen (Bardossy and Plate, 1992) and thePerfect Prognosis (Perfect Prog) method from numericalweather prediction. The large-scale atmosphericcirculation is linked with site-specific observationsof atmospheric variables, such as precipitation, windspeed or temperature, within a specified region. Classifying each day by circulation patterns isachieved by clustering algorithms, fuzzy rule bases,neural nets or decision trees. The linkages areextended to GCM output to account for climate change. Stochastic models are developed from the probabilitydistributions for extreme events. Objective analysiscan be used to interpolate values of these models toother locations. The concepts and some applicationsare reviewed to provide a basis for extending thedownscaling approach to assessing the integrated riskof the six air issues: climate change, UV-B radiation,acid rain, transport of hazardous air pollutants, smogand suspended particulates.  相似文献

为探究中国大陆城市O3污染状况时空变化的总体特征,运用时空统计分析和GIS技术对2015—2016年全国开展O3常规监测的336个城市进行分析,揭示近两年O3浓度及不同等级污染天数的时空变化格局,并着重对比分析"三区十群"区域内外O3浓度的变化差异.结果表明:2015—2016年期间,全国336个城市中,有258个城市2016年年均O3浓度值较2015年升高,形成了新的O3污染空间格局;京津冀及周边地区、长三角地区、中部的河南、武汉污染较重,东南沿海和西南地区的云南、西藏污染相对较轻;长三角地区和山东城市群是中国O3核心污染区域,陕西、山西及安徽三省O3浓度较2015年有大幅升高.O3的空间分布与NOx排放量、生成控制型等因素密切相关.已有的研究区域中除华北平原和四川盆地等地区的郊区点位以外,我国大多数地区的O3生成控制型属于VOCs控制型.研究结果有利于从宏观上直接对比评估国家大气污染重点防控区内外O3污染特征变化的差异,从而针对性地开展环境污染防控.  相似文献

Administrative machinery has been set up to regulate and control most of the emissions that are known to have severe local consequences, such as the discharge of raw sewage into rivers and lakes and the smokestack emission of air pollutants. Now, the nature of environmental degradation is usually different. We are faced with pollutants and effects with more subtle cause-effect relationships, often characterized by larger geographic areas of interest and longer term potential damage; the potential risk is now more chronic than acute. Acid rain and climate change are good examples, in that they are associated with a variety of pollutants from a number of sources and damage to ecosystems occurs over many years. It is argued that monitoring programs should evolve to reflect the changing nature of the environmental problems they are addressing. It is now necessary to consider interactions among many pollutants, mixing among the various media, and potentially affecting many components of the ecosystem in both indirect and direct ways. Here, integrated monitoring and analysis is presented as a unifying strategy to bring together different measurement methodologies in different disciplines, addressing environmental questions of complexity beyond the scope of many existing activites that have a classical narrower focus. The underlying concept is of nested networks, each tier being composed of sites selected for specific purposes but arranged to maximize the number of common sites where more multidisciplinary questions can be addressed.  相似文献

Atmospheric methyl bromide (CH3Br) measured at a remote ground station in the Arctic (mid-1996 to early 2002) and in the free troposphere at mid-latitude (early 1999 to early 2002) showed a steady annual average decrease of 4–6%. The trend was consistent with a simulation of the response to the phase-out schedule of anthropogenic emissions under the Montreal Protocol and its amendments, suggesting that a decrease in CH3Br abundance in the Northern Hemisphere of as much as 40% from the level of the early 1990s would be possible by the completion date of the program.  相似文献

Two approaches for identification of source locations and preferred transport pathways of atmospheric particulate trace elements and aerosol species are investigated, namely, versions of the potential source contribution function method (PSCF) and the concentration field method (CF). Both methods are based on combining chemical data with calculated air parcel backward trajectories. The two methods are applied to four multi-species multi-annual concentration time series measured at sites in Finland, Norway, and Israel. A non-parametric bootstrap technique is used to estimate the statistical significance of the calculated PSCF values. It is found that the methods agree well with each other and correctly identify known emission sources. Examples of applying the methods are presented, mainly for the site in Finland.  相似文献
