Optical methods for counting and sizing cloud droplets and a wide range of cloud water sampling methods were used to characterize the atmospheric liquid phase during the FEBUKO cloud experiments. Results near cloud base as well as more than 300 m inside the hill cap clouds are presented, reflecting their inhomogeneous nature. The cloud droplet number varies from 50 to 1000 cm−3 and drop sizes between 1 and 20 μm diameter are most frequent. Variations in the liquid water content (LWC) and in the total ion content (TIC) are much smaller when the measurement position is deeper in the cloud. Near cloud base variability in updraft strength and, near cloud top, entrainment processes (droplet evaporation by mixing with drier air, aerosol and gas scavenging) disturb the adiabatic conditions and produce large variations in LWC and chemical composition. Six different active cloud water collectors and impactors were running side by side; they differ in the principle of sampling, in the throughput of cloudy air per unit time and in the calculated 50% cutoff diameter, which influence also their sampling efficiency. Two of them are designed to collect cloud water in two droplet size fractions. Three cloud events were selected by the FEBUKO team for detailed cloud physical and chemical analyses because they serve best the modelling demands concerning connected flow between the upwind, summit and downwind sites for process studies. Frequency distributions of the LWC and, also of the cloud base height are given as statistical parameters for both FEBUKO experiments.  相似文献

Organic contaminant concentration data are often lipid normalized to provide an indication of the chemical fugacity in the sample or to compare the relative equilibrium status of samples from the same environment. This study compared lipid normalized PCB and organochlorine concentration data for tissues of individual fish when lipids were measured using chloroform/methanol (CM) or dichloromethane/hexane (DH) extractions. The CM extraction produced higher lipid yields for dorsal muscle (8-fold difference) and carcass (1.7-fold difference) compared to DH extractions, while both methods yielded comparable lipid contents for liver and adipose tissue. Lipid normalized tissue/carcass PCB and organochlorine concentration ratios were variable across tissue types when lipid contents from the CM technique were used, whereas, tissue/carcass concentration ratios approached the expected value of unity for each tissue when DH-derived lipids were used. These data suggest that the tissue lipid content as derived using the DH extraction provided a better surrogate measure of sample partition capacity than tissue lipids determined using the CM technique.  相似文献

Since it is necessary to isolate the most significant factors influencing personal concern for the environment, this paper utilizes loglinear models for identifying the interactions and interrelationships underlying multidimensional environmental survey data. A field study in Guyana conducted face-to-face interviews with 1600 citizens. Acquired categorical data were then subjected to loglinear modeling techniques to determine what significance the factors education, age, residential location, and gender have on personal concern for the environment. The loglinear models obtained from the five-dimensional contingency table suggest that there is a direct relationship between education and personal concern for the environment. Age has an interaction with education, and some influence on environmental concern, with younger respondents expressing higher concern for the environment than older respondents. Other results from the loglinear model demonstrate that residential location and the gender of the respondents do not have any statistically significant association with personal concern for the environment.  相似文献

There is significant differentiation at five polymorphic loci ofMytilus edulis among certain geographical areas of the Atlantic coast of North America. Non-metric multidimensional numerical methods distinguished three population groups: (I) populations south of Cape Cod, (II) populations throughout the Gulf of Maine, Gulf of St. Lawrence, areas of both southern and northern Newfoundland, and southern Hudson Bay, and (III) populations in southeastern Nova Scotia, northern Newfoundland and Hudson Strait, Quebec. Each subset consists of populations that exhibit characteristic multilocus, multiple allele genotypes. Populations in Groups II and III are spatially interdigitated among each other. At least one geographical area of mixing between genetically distinct populations occurs in northeastern Newfoundland. There is no evidence for interbreeding among genetically distinct individuals in mixed populations, suggesting the possibility that populations in the Atlantic Canadian Provinces and areas of northern Canada may consist of two distinct species.  相似文献

The propagules of most species of reef fish are advected from the reef, necessitating a return to reef habitats at the end of the pelagic stage. There is increasing evidence of active attraction to the reef but the sensory abilities of reef fish larvae have not been characterized well enough to fully identify cues. The electrophysiological methods of auditory brainstem response (ABR) and electroolfactogram (EOG) were used to investigate auditory and olfactory abilities of pre- and post-settlement stages of a damselfish, Pomacentrus nagasakiensis (Pisces, Pomacentridae). Audiograms of the two ontogenetic stages were similar. Pre-settlement larvae heard as well as their post-settlement counterparts at all but two of the tested frequencies between 100 Hz and 2,000 Hz. At 100 and 600 Hz, pre-settlement larvae had ABR thresholds 8 dB higher than those of post-settlement juveniles. Both stages were able to detect locally recorded reef sounds. Similarly, no difference in olfactory ability was found between the two ontogenetic stages. Both stages showed olfactory responses to conspecifics as well as L-alanine. Therefore, the auditory and olfactory senses have similar capabilities in both ontogenetic stages. Settlement stage larvae of P. nagasakiensis can hear and smell reef cues but it is unclear as to what extent larvae use these sounds or smells, or both, as cues for locating settlement sites. Climate change is expected to have important impacts on aquatic ecosystems. On the Boreal Shield, mean annual air temperatures are expected to increase 2 to 4°C over the next 50 years. An important challenge is to predict how changes in climate and climate variability will impact natural systems so that sustainable management policies can be implemented. To predict responses to complex ecosystem changes associated with climate change, we used long-term biotic databases to evaluate how important elements of the biota in Boreal Shield lakes have responded to past fluctuations in climate. Our long-term records span a two decade period where there have been unusually cold years and unusually warm years. We used coherence analyses to test for regionally operating controls on climate, water temperature, pH, and plankton richness and abundance in three regions across Ontario: the Experimental Lakes Area, Sudbury, and Dorset. Inter-annual variation in air temperature was similar among regions, but there was a weak relationship among regions for precipitation. While air temperature was closely related to lake surface temperatures in each of the regions, there were weak relationships between lake surface temperature and richness or abundance of the plankton. However, inter-annual changes in lake chemistry (i.e., pH) were correlated with some biotic variables. In some lakes in Sudbury and Dorset, pH was dependent on extreme events. For example, El Nino related droughts resulted in acidification pulses in some lakes that influenced phytoplankton and zooplankton richness. These results suggest that there can be strong heterogeneity in lake ecosystem responses within and across regions.  相似文献

The effects of natural succession and invasions of indigenous reed Phragmites australis and alien goldenrods Solidago sp. on butterfly communities of wet grassland were investigated in Kraków (southern Poland) after management cessation.The total number of species and individuals, mean number of species per survey and a species diversity (Shannon-Wiener index) were highest in fallow lands, old fallow lands and young forests, and the lowest in fallow lands invaded by reed and goldenrod and in mature forests. These results (1) reveal the importance of extensively mown meadows and fallow land for butterflies, (2) indicate that meadow restoration is still possible even several decades after abandonment and (3) show that invasion of reed and non-native goldenrods should be prevented.A few very rare species included in the Habitat Directive (Lycaena dispar, Lycaena helle, Maculinea teleius and Maculinea nausithous) were common on the wet grasslands in Krakow, thus the area should be protected. Moreover, it was shown that the presence and relative abundance of Maculinea butterflies were good indicators of general butterfly species richness and abundance in the investigated wet grasslands.  相似文献

北美洲SO2排放量的减少激起了人们对加拿大东南部的水生态系统能迅速摆脱酸化的状态的期待.但是只有那些明显减少了排放量的冶炼厂附近的湖泊达到了这种期望值.在临近大西洋的省份魁北克和安大略,受远程污染源影响的湖泊的硫酸根离子(SO2- 4)浓度都有一定降低,但pH和碱度则仅有较少量的提高.对于这种延迟的酸度响应,有如下几种因素可以解释:碱基阳离子含量的下降,干旱加速SO2- 4的迁移,水体内部碱性物质生成机制遭到破坏;同时硝酸盐和有机阴离子含量的提高也可能是其中的原因.对加拿大东南部生物恢复的监测资料非常有限,即使有的话,在萨德伯里(Sudbury)和基拉尼(Killarney)地区以外也很难找到恢复的证据.比如,尽管除了酸化作用外其他因素也对上述现象有一定影响,新思科舍河中的大西洋鲑鱼出现率和安大略湖潜鸟的繁殖成功率实际上正在下降.化学和生物学模型预测,只有比目前法规要求严格的多的SO2排放削减额才能促进广泛的化学恢复和其后的生物恢复,而在加拿大东南部的众多湖泊中重建工业化前的化学与生物学条件或许很难实现.  相似文献

Evolutionary and ecological transitions from carnivorous to omnivorous feeding may be constrained by the ability of the animal to cope with disparate types of foods, even if preadaptations for such behaviour exist. The omnivorous true bug, Dicyphus hesperus (Hemiptera: Miridae) requires both animals (small, soft-bodied insects) and plants in its diet and obtains the majority of its dietary and metabolic water from plant feeding. Serrations on the lateral margins of the mandibular stylets wear with age, and this wear is exacerbated when the insects feed on plants compared to those provided free water and no plants. D. hesperus that feed on plants attack fewer prey but consumed similar amounts of prey tissue compared to individuals that were provided free water. Although others have shown mandible wear for plant-chewing animals we show for the first time that plant feeding can impose similar wear on plant-piercing animals as well.  相似文献
