Feasibility of using metals to remediate water containing TCE 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The feasibility of treating underground water contaminated by a chlorinated organic compound with bimetallics Fe/Ni, Zn/Ni and Zn single metal was studied. Column tests to simulate a reactive permeable wall in a funnel-and-gate system were used. Research results indicated that bimetallic Fe0/Ni0 and Zn0/Ni0 all had a very strong degraded power to trichloroethylene (TCE ) at concentration up to 25 mg/l under different flow rates (27 cm/day–20 m/day). Furthermore, the concentrations of TCE and various ions in the treated effluent were nearly lower than the values specified in related standards for drinking water in Taiwan. A Framework for Net Environmental Benefit Analysis for Remediation or Restoration of Contaminated Sites 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Net environmental benefits are gains in value of environmental services or other ecological properties attained by remediation or ecological restoration minus the value of adverse environmental effects caused by those actions. Net environmental benefit analysis (NEBA) is a methodology for comparing and ranking net environmental benefits associated with multiple management alternatives. A NEBA for chemically contaminated sites typically involves comparison of several management alternatives: (1) leaving contamination in place; (2) physically, chemically, or biologically remediating the site through traditional means; (3) improving ecological value through onsite and offsite restoration alternatives that do not directly focus on removal of chemical contamination; or (4) a combination of those alternatives. NEBA involves activities that are common to remedial alternatives analysis for state regulations and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, post-closure and corrective action permits under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, evaluation of generic types of response actions pertinent to the Oil Pollution Act, and land management actions that are negotiated with regulatory agencies in flexible regulatory environments (i.e., valuing environmental services or other ecological properties, assessing adverse impacts, and evaluating remediation or restoration options). This article presents a high-level framework for NEBA at contaminated sites with subframeworks for natural attenuation (the contaminated reference state), remediation, and ecological restoration alternatives. Primary information gaps related to NEBA include nonmonetary valuation methods, exposure–response models for all stressors, the temporal dynamics of ecological recovery, and optimal strategies for ecological restoration.Published online 相似文献

In recent years there has been a startling rise in the issuance of fish consumption advisories. Unfortunately, compliance
by the public is often low. Low compliance can be due to a number of factors, including confusion over the meaning of advisories,
conflicting advisories issued by different agencies, controversies involving health benefits versus the risks from consuming
fish, and an unwillingness to act on the advisories because of personal beliefs. In some places, such as along the Savannah
River, one state (South Carolina) had issued a consumption advisory while the other (Georgia) had not, although at present,
both states now issue consumption advisories for the Savannah River. Herein we report on the development of a fish fact sheet
to address the confusing and conflicting information available to the public about consuming fish from the Savannah River.
The process involved interviewing fishers to ascertain fishing and consumption patterns, evaluating contaminant levels and
exposure pathways, discussing common grounds for the provision of information, and consensus-building among different regulatory
agencies (US Environmental Protection Agency, South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Georgia Department
of Natural Resources) and the Department of Energy. Consensus, a key ingredient in solving many different types of “commons”
problems, was aided by an outside organization, the Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation (CRESP).
The initial role for CRESP was to offer scientific data as a basis for groups with different assumptions about risks to reach
agreement on a regulatory response action. The process was an example of how credible science can be used to implement management
and policies and provide a basis for consensus-building on difficult risk communication issues. The paper provides several
lessons for improving the risk process from stakeholder conflicts, through risk assessment, to risk management. It also suggests
that consensus-building and risk communication are continuing processes that involve assimilation of new information on contaminants
and food-chain processes, state and federal law, public policy, and public response. 相似文献

We studied the dynamics of mercury (Hg) transfer in Phaseolus vulgaris plants grown in soil with Hg-doped compost at the maximum levels permitted by Colombian law on organic amendments. Quantitative evaluation of transfer was made in different plant organs: roots, stem, leaves, pods and seeds. Matrix effect was determined in doped soil assays, using soil with and without addition of compost. Results showed that the use of organic matter reduced Hg transfer to the plant and the amount transferred was differentially distributed to the organs. We observed an inverse relationship between concentration and distance from the body to the root. It was evident that transfer was mediated by quantitative factors; the greater the presence of mercury in soil, the larger the amount that will be transferred. Results also indicate the remedial effect of compost and the presence of a barrier, at the root level, against mercury translocation to the plant aerial parts. 相似文献

Multi-stage optimal design for groundwater remediation: A hybrid bi-level programming approach 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper presents the development of a hybrid bi-level programming approach for supporting multi-stage groundwater remediation design. To investigate remediation performances, a subsurface model was employed to simulate contaminant transport. A mixed-integer nonlinear optimization model was formulated in order to evaluate different remediation strategies. Multivariate relationships based on a filtered stepwise clustering analysis were developed to facilitate the incorporation of a simulation model within a nonlinear optimization framework. By using the developed statistical relationships, predictions needed for calculating the objective function value can be quickly obtained during the search process. The main advantage of the developed approach is that the remediation strategy can be adjusted from stage to stage, which makes the optimization more realistic. The proposed approach was examined through its application to a real-world aquifer remediation case in western Canada. The optimization results based on this application can help the decision makers to comprehensively evaluate remediation performance. 相似文献

The impact on a population from an event resulting in dispersal and deposition of radionuclides in an urban area could be significant, in terms of both the number of people affected and the economic costs of recovery. The use of computer models for assessment of urban contamination situations and remedial options enables the evaluation of a variety of situations or alternative recovery strategies in contexts of preparedness or decision-making. At present a number of models and modelling approaches are available for different purposes. This paper summarizes the available modelling approaches, approaches for modelling countermeasure effectiveness, and current sources of information on parameters related to countermeasure effectiveness. Countermeasure information must be applied with careful thought as to its applicability for the specific situation being modelled. The significance of heterogeneity on mass flux from DNAPL source zones: an experimental investigation 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Understanding the process of mass transfer from source zones of aquifers contaminated with organic chemicals in the form of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPL) is of importance in site management and remediation. A series of intermediate-scale tank experiments was conducted to examine the influence of aquifer heterogeneity on DNAPL mass transfer contributing to dissolved mass emission from source zone into groundwater under natural flow before and after remediation. A Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) spill was performed into six source zone models of increasing heterogeneity, and both the spatial distribution of the dissolution behavior and the net effluent mass flux were examined. Experimentally created initial PCE entrapment architecture resulting from the PCE migration was largely influenced by the coarser sand lenses and the PCE occupied between 30 and 60% of the model aquifer depth. The presence of DNAPL had no apparent effect on the bulk hydraulic conductivity of the porous media. Up to 71% of PCE mass in each of the tested source zone was removed during a series of surfactant flushes, with associated induced PCE mobilization responsible for increasing vertical DNAPL distributions. Effluent mass flux due to water dissolution was also found to increase progressively due to the increase in NAPL-water contact area even though the PCE mass was reduced. Doubling of local groundwater flow velocities showed negligible rate-limited effects at the scale of these experiments. Thus, mass transfer behavior was directly controlled by the morphology of DNAPL within each source zone. Effluent mass flux values were normalized by the up-gradient DNAPL distributions. For the suite of aquifer heterogeneities and all remedial stages, normalized flux values fell within a narrow band with mean of 0.39 and showed insensitivity to average source zone saturations. 相似文献
