The pressure required for a chlorinated solvent to enter a geological medium can be calculated given knowledge of the characteristic pore size of the medium and the interfacial tension (IFT) and contact angle of the solvent-water-rock system. Using a centrifuge-based method, capillary pressure-saturation curves have been determined for 30 water-saturated samples of Permo-Triassic sandstones for the solvent tetrachloroethene (PCE). These curves have been successfully fitted using the van Genuchten function to determine PCE entry pressure for each of the sandstone samples. A plot of PCE entry pressures against average pore diameter shows a linear relationship in log-log space; however, observed values for PCE entry pressure are significantly lower than would be expected theoretically for a sandstone-PCE-water system. This may be explained either by a decrease in the IFT or an increase in the contact angle. The IFT may decrease during contact with sandstones due to hysteresis effects during imbibition and drainage of fluids, but this is unlikely to be sufficient to account for the low entry pressures observed. Therefore, it is inferred that the low observed PCE entry pressures are due to higher than expected PCE contact angles, and that the average pore-throat surface of the sandstones is more solvent wetting than would be expected. A weak acid extraction indicates the presence of calcite and dolomite in the sandstone cores, and a correlation is observed between carbonate content per unit porosity and a reduction in PCE entry pressure. It is suggested that these mineral phases are responsible for observed wettability changes and a conceptual model is proposed. One consequence of the lower observed entry pressures is that solvents are likely to penetrate deeper into the matrix of water-saturated sandstones than previously expected.  相似文献

Using a liquid–solid phase inversion method, a hybrid matrix poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) membrane was prepared with alumina(Al2O3) nanoparticle addition. Pd/Fe nanoparticles(NPs) were successfully immobilized on the Al2O3/PVDF membrane, which was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM). The micrographs showed that the Pd/Fe NPs were dispersed homogeneously. Several important experimental parameters were optimized, including the mechanical properties, contact angle and surface area of Al2O3/PVDF composite membranes with different Al2O3 contents. At the same time, the ferrous ion concentration and the effect of hydrophilization were studied. The results showed that the modified Al2O3/PVDF membrane functioned well as a support. The Al2O3/PVDF membrane with immobilized Pd/Fe NPs exhibited high efficiency in terms of dichloroacetic acid(DCAA) dechlorination. Additionally, a reaction pathway for DCAA dechlorination by Pd/Fe NPs immobilized on the Al2O3/PVDF membrane system was proposed.  相似文献

We consider the management of urban stormwater in two connected dams. Stormwater generated by local rainfall flows into a capture dam and is subsequently pumped into a similar sized holding dam. We assume random gross inflow and constant demand. If we wish to minimise overflow from the system then the optimal management policy is to pump as much water as possible each day from the capture dam to the holding dam without allowing the holding dam to overflow. We shall refer to this policy as the pump-to-fill policy. The model is based on the Parafield stormwater management system in the City of Salisbury (CoS) but assumes constant demand instead of level dependent outflow. If there is insufficient water in the holding dam to meet the desired daily demand then all water in the holding dam is used and the shortfall is obtained from other sources. CoS, in suburban Adelaide in South Australia, is recognised in local government circles as a world leader in urban stormwater management. The water is supplied to local industry to replace regular mains water and is also used to restore and maintain urban wetlands. In mathematical terms the pump-to-fill policy defines a Markov chain with a large transition matrix and a characteristic regular block structure. We use specialised Matrix Analytic Methods to decompose the event space and find simplified equations for the steady state probability vector. In this way we enable an elementary solution procedure which we illustrate by solving the modified Parafield problem. The optimal nature of the pump-to-fill policy is established in a recent paper by Pearce et al. (JIMO 3(2):313–320, 2007). A multi-scaled model for biodiversity conservation in forests was introduced in Sweden 30 years ago, which makes it a pioneer example of an integrated ecosystem approach. Trees are set aside for biodiversity purposes at multiple scale levels varying from individual trees to areas of thousands of hectares, with landowner responsibility at the lowest level and with increasing state involvement at higher levels. Ecological theory supports the multi-scaled approach, and retention efforts at every harvest occasion stimulate landowners’ interest in conservation. We argue that the model has large advantages but that in a future with intensified forestry and global warming, development based on more progressive thinking is necessary to maintain and increase biodiversity. Suggestions for the future include joint planning for several forest owners, consideration of cost-effectiveness, accepting opportunistic work models, adjusting retention levels to stand and landscape composition, introduction of temporary reserves, creation of “receiver habitats” for species escaping climate change, and protection of young forests.  相似文献

This article analyzes the effects of increasing urbanization on open space preserves within the metropolitan area of Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Time series analysis is used in 10-year increments over 40 years to study urban landscape change. Three landscape metrics—(1) matrix utility (measures intensity of adjacent land uses), (2) isolation (measures distances to other open space patches), and (3) connectivity (measures physical links to other open space patches and corridors)—are used to assess changes in landscape patterns and serve as indicators of urban ecological integrity of the open space preserves. Results show that in the case of both open space preserves, general decline in indicators of urban ecological integrity was evident. The matrix utility analysis demonstrated that increasing intensity of land uses adjacent to preserve is likely to increase edge effects, reducing the habitat value of interior or core habitat areas. Isolation analysis showed that both preserves have experienced increasing isolation from other open space elements over time. Also, connectivity analysis indicated that terrestrial connections to other open space elements have also deteriorated. Conclusions of this research demonstrate that while preservation of natural areas as open space is important in an urban context, intense development of surrounding areas reduces the urban ecological integrity significantly.  相似文献

Two types of demographic analyses, perturbation analysis and uncertainty analysis, can be conducted to gain insights about matrix population models and guide population management. Perturbation analysis studies how the perturbation of demographic parameters (survival, growth, and reproduction parameters) may affect the population projection, while uncertainty analysis evaluates how much uncertainty there is in population dynamic predictions and where the uncertainty comes from. Previously, both perturbation analysis and uncertainty analysis were conducted on the long-term population growth rate. However, the population may not reach its equilibrium state, especially when there is management by harvesting or hunting. Recently, there has been an increased interest in short-term transient dynamics, which can differ from asymptotic long-term dynamics. There are currently techniques to conduct perturbation analyses of short-term transient dynamics, but no techniques have been proposed for uncertainty analysis of such dynamics. In this study, we introduced an uncertainty analysis technique, the general Fourier Amplitude Sensitivity Test (FAST), to study uncertainties in transient population dynamics. The general FAST is able to identify the amount of uncertainty in transient dynamics and contributions by different demographic parameters. We applied the general FAST to a mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus) matrix population model to give a clear illustration of how uncertainty analysis can be conducted for transient dynamics arising from matrix population models.  相似文献

Convexity, as a fundamental property of sets and functions defined on convex sets, plays an important role in many mathematical and applied disciplines, including extremal and optimal-control problems. We prove the set of all feasible projection matrices in a general class of matrix models for stage-structured population dynamics to be convex and the dominant eigenvalue (λ1) of any projection 2 × 2 matrix to be either a convex, or a concave function on a simplex of the matrix first-row entries (i.e., stage-specific reproduction rates). The latter is also conjectured for the general n × n case. Though looking far from practical needs of matrix population models, this mathematical result has appeared to be quite useful in solving a practical problem to calibrate the projection matrix, i.e., to estimate all the stage-specific vital rates, from empirical data. The data from monitoring of individual life histories of marked plants on permanent sample plots during successive years enable direct calculation of the stage-specific survival and ontogenetic transition rates, but the rates of reproduction do remain uncertain as far as the parent plants can hardly be determined for the (not yet marked!) recruitment.  相似文献
