The evolution of aposematism is linked to increased opportunities for conspicuous sexual displays since detection by potential predators is no longer disadvantageous. Therefore, phenotypic divergence in aposematic species leading to relatively cryptic forms is expected to constrain such opportunities, by restoring the trade-off between natural and sexual selection on the boldness of sexual displays. We asked if and how a derived phenotype of the poison-dart frog Oophaga granulifera that appears relatively cryptic to potential predators exhibits conspicuous sexual displays for potential mates. We used visual modeling of frog contrasts against their natural backgrounds to test if for conspecifics green frogs appear less conspicuous than red frogs as they do for birds. We conducted behavioral observations of focal red and green males to determine if green frogs adjust their display behavior to the availability of potential mates. Dorsal brightness is known to influence female preferences in at least one poison frog species. We found that, despite being less visible under some measures, green frogs may appear as bright as red frogs for conspecifics but not birds, when viewed on dark backgrounds. Additionally, green males called more intermittently than red males when advertising to distant females, but they exhibited a dramatic increase in calling activity in proximity of a female and were as active as red males in this context. Together, our results suggest that green frogs retain context-dependent conspicuousness to conspecifics despite the evolution of relative crypsis to potential predators. 相似文献

Competition for space changes species’ distributions and community organization on tropical rocky shores, and the presence of secondary metabolites in the tissues of non-indigenous species may aid them in establishing and expanding their range through negative competitive interactions. The aim of this study was to describe the range of chemical substances produced by the non-indigenous cup corals Tubastraea coccinea and T. tagusensis and to test whether they varied in the field when the corals were placed in proximity to two local competitors. Cholest-5-en-3β-ol and 9-octadecanoic acid were two common secondary metabolites found in the tissues of Tubastraea. In the competition interaction experiment, necrosis was detected on the tissues of the coral Mussismilia hispida, and this species induced variation in sterol, alkaloid, and fatty acid production in Tubastraea tissues. In contrast, a sponge overgrew Tubastraea colonies. These results indicate that chemical defense may contribute to the ability of these non-indigenous corals to invade native communities. 相似文献

Human pressure has been exponentially growing during recent decades in coastal areas, which have led to drastic losses of biodiversity in coastal ecosystems. The current conservation status of many coastal plant species is directly related to a lack of environmental criteria in the urban planning of coastal areas over recent decades. This study aimed to evaluate the evolution, over the last 9 years, of the conservation status of various populations of the endangered plant Glaucium flavum, exploring the extent to which human pressure and different management strategies practiced in the coastal areas where the populations are established have affected the conservation status of the species. The populations analysed have evolved in a different manner over the last 9 years, as have their threat factors, and a relationship was evident between their conservation status and the evolution of these different threat factors. Our results indicate that an appropriate planning of local management actions, such as the installation of walkways or the successful eradication of invasive species, may be determinant factors for successful conservation of the coastal vegetation. The presence of species that are sensitive to slight changes in the ecosystem, and the main factors that govern the plant performance of these species, must be given full consideration in decision-making processes of coastal planning and management. 相似文献

Fragile coastal areas suffer from human activities. Environmental quality is one of the most important aspects in a tourist destination of sun and sand. The quality of bathing water and sand became indicators in the worldwide competition of beach destinations. We studied the water and sand quality along the beach of Puerto Velero, in northern Colombia. Water and sand beach quality were monitored during thirteen months. This allowed identifying the most significant sources of pollution along the beach, and understanding the interrelationship between tourism and the effects on the environment. Linear correlations allow assessing the association between the number of visitors and the physicochemical and microbiological parameters. The number of visitors was directly correlated with the presence of grease and oils, both in water and sand, as well as with fecal coliforms in water. A relation between the suspended solids and the presence of fecal coliforms in water and sand was observed. This statistical approach allows understanding the origin of beach sand and swimming water pollution at tourist beaches. Overall, sand quality has an important influence and is directly related to the water quality of the beach. Both the number of tourists and their activities are main factors explaining the contamination of the water and sand. This shows the importance of management of waste and wastewater in combination with awareness raising initiatives. More research should include monitoring and evaluating of both water and sand beach and provide data to revise the existing legal framework. 相似文献

The extraordinary population growth of certain ungulate species is increasingly a concern in agroforestry areas because overabundance may negatively affect natural environments and human livelihoods. However, society may have negative perceptions of killing wildlife to reduce their numbers and mitigate damage. We used an online survey that included a choice experiment to determine Spanish citizens’ (n = 190) preferences toward wildlife population control measures related to negative effects of ungulate overabundance (negative impacts on vegetation and other wildlife species and disease transmission to livestock) in 2 agroforestry national parks in Spain. We used latent-class and willingness-to-pay in space models to analyze survey results. Two percent of respondents thought a national park should have no human intervention even if lack of management may cause environmental degradation, whereas 95% of respondents favored efforts to reduce damage caused by overabundant ungulate species. We estimated human well-being losses of survey respondents when sustainable effects of deer overabundance on the environment became unsustainable effects and well-being gains when sustainable effects transitioned to no visible effects. We found that the type of wildlife-control program was a very relevant issue for the respondents; indirect control in which killing was avoided was the preferred action. Sixty-six percent of respondents agreed with the option of hunters paying for culling animals to reduce ungulate impacts rather than management cost coming out of taxes, whereas 19% of respondents were against this option and willing to pay for other solutions in national parks. Our results suggest that killing wildlife in national parks could be a socially acceptable tool to manage overabundance problems in certain contexts, but it could also generate social conflicts. 相似文献

Predation is an unavoidable and dangerous fact in the lifetime of prey animals and some sign of the proximity of a predator may be enough to trigger a response in the prey. We investigated whether different degrees of predation risk by red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) evoke behavioural and physiological stress responses in wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus). We examined the variation in mice responses due to individual factors (sex and reproductive status) and related them to the concentration of the volatile compounds from fox faeces over time. In our experiment, we introduced predation cues into four plots, each subjected to a different concentration treatment (0, 10, 50 and 100% concentration of fresh faeces of red fox), based on the following outline: initial odourless phase 0, phase1 in which predation treatment was renewed daily, and phase 2 in which we renewed the treatment only on the first day. Wood mice were live trapped during all three phases and the physiological response was measured non-invasively by analysing faecal corticosterone metabolites (FCM) in freshly collected faeces. Data were analysed by Generalized Linear Mixed Models. Overall, males were trapped less often than females, and reproductively active individuals from both sexes avoided traps more than non-reproductively active individuals, especially in medium- and high- concentration plots. Variations in FCM concentrations were explained by plot, the interaction between plot and treatment phase, and the interaction between the treatment phase and the reproductive status. During phase 1, we detected a significant rise in FCM levels that increased with predator faecal odour concentration. Additionally, reproductively active individuals showed a strong physiological response during both phases 1 and 2 in all plots, except the control plot. Our results indicated that wood mice are able to discriminate different degrees of predation risk, which allows them to trigger gradual changes in their behavioural and physiological stress responses. 相似文献

Background, aim, and scope In this work, the potential for using olive-mill solid waste as an organic amendment for biochemical and biological restoration
of a trichloroethylene-contaminated soil, which has previously been stabilized through vermicomposting processes, has been
explored.
Materials and methods Trichloroethylene-contaminated water was pumped into soil columns with a layer of vermicompost at 10-cm depth (biobarrier
system). The impacts of the trichloroethylene on the microbial community were evaluated by determining: (1) the overall microbial
activity (estimated as dehydrogenase activity) and enzyme activities related to the main nutrient cycles (β-glucosidase, o-diphenoloxidase, phosphatase, urease, and arylsulphatase activities). In addition, isoelectric focusing of the soil extracellular
humic-β-glucosidase complexes was performed to study the enzymatically active humic matter related to the soil carbon cycle.
(2) The soil bacterial diversity and the molecular mechanisms for the bacterial resistance to organic solvents were also determined.
For this, polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) was used to detect changes in bacterial
community structure and PCR-single-strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP) was developed and optimised for detection and
discrimination of the resistance-nodulation-division (RND) genes amplified from the contaminated soils.
Results Vermicompost reduced, with respect to the unamended soil, about 30% of the trichloroethylene leaching during the first month
of the experiment. Trichloroethylene had a marked negative effect on soil dehydrogenase, β-glucosidase, urease, phosphatase,
and arylsulphatase activities. Nevertheless, the vermicompost tended to avoid this toxic effect. Vermicompost also displays
stable humic-β-glucosidase complexes that increased the extracellular activity related to C-cycle in the contaminated soils.
The isoelectric focusing technique showed a more biochemically active humic matter in the soil sampled under the vermicompost.
The behaviour of the three main phyla of bacteria isolated from the DGGE bands was quite different. Bands corresponding to
Actinobacteria disappeared, whereas those affiliated with Proteobacteria remained after the trichloroethylene contamination. The disappeared Actinobacteria became visible in the soil amended with the vermicompost. Bands corresponding to Bacteriodetes appeared only in columns of contaminated soils. In this study, six types of RND proteins were detected by PCR-SSCP in the
natural soil, three in the trichloroethylene-contaminated soil and 7/5 in trichloroethylene-contaminated soil above/below
the vermicompost in the biobarrier columns. Trichloroethylene tended to reduce or eliminate all the clones detected in the
uncontaminated soil, whereas new efflux pumps appeared in the biobarrier columns.
Discussion Although enzymes incorporated into the humic substances of vermicomposted olive wastes are quite stable, trichloroethylene
also inhibited the background levels of the soil extracellular β-glucosidase activity in the amended soils. The decrease was
less severe in the biobarrier system, but in any case, no relation was found between the levels of trichloroethylene in soil
and extracellular β-glucosidase activity, or between the latter and the quantity of humic carbon in soils. The isoelectric
focusing technique was carried out in the humic fraction to determine whether the loss of activity occurred in overall extracellular
β-glucosidase or in that linked to stable humic substances (humic–enzyme complexes). The contaminated soils showed the lower
enzyme activities, whereas contaminated and amended soils presented greater quantity of focalised (and therefore stable) humic
carbon and spectra heterogeneity: very different bands with higher enzyme activities. No clear relationship between trichloroethylene
concentration in soil and diversity of the bacterial population was noted. Similar patterns could be found when the community
structures of bacteria and microbial activity were considered. Since the use of the dehydrogenase assay has been recognised
as a useful indicator of the overall measure of the intensity of microbial metabolism, these results could be attributed to
PCR-DGGE methodology, since the method reveals the presence of dominant populations regardless of their metabolic state. Trichloroethylene
maintained or even increased the number of clones with the DNA encoding for RND proteins, except for the contaminated soil
located above the vermicompost. However, the main effect of trichloroethylene was to modify the structure of the community
in contaminated soils, considering the type of efflux pumps encoded by the DNA extracted from soil bacteria.
Conclusions Trichloroethylene inhibited specific functions in soil and had a clear influence on the structure of the autochthonous bacterial
community. The organic matter released by the vermicomposted olive waste tended to avoid the toxic effect of the contaminant.
Trichloroethylene also inhibited the background levels of the soil extracellular β-glucosidase activity, even when vermicompost
was present. In this case, the effect of the vermicompost was to provide and/or to stimulate the humic-β-glucosidase complexes
located in the soil humic fraction >104, increasing the resistance of the enzyme to the inhibition. The bacterial community from the soil presented significantly
different mechanisms to resistance to solvents (RND proteins) under trichloroethylene conditions. The effect of the vermicompost
was to induce these mechanisms in the autochthonous bacterial community and/or incorporated new bacterial species, able to
grow in a trichloroethylene-contaminated ambient. Coupled biochemical and molecular methodologies are therefore helpful approaches
in assessing the effect of an organic amendment on the biochemical and biological restoration of a trichloroethylene-contaminated
soil.
Recommendations and perspectives Since the main biochemical and biological effects of the organic amendment on the contaminated soil seem to be the incorporation
of biochemically active humic matter, as well as new bacterial species able to grow in a trichloroethylene-contaminated ambient,
isoelectric focusing and PCR-SSCP methodologies should be considered as parts of an integrated approach to determine the success
of a restoration scheme. 相似文献
