Between 1993 and 1999 two EU funded projects wereexecuted aimed at (i) the development of drydeposition monitoring methods for core sites andlarge scale application, (ii) the installation andrunning of three core sites in Europe and (iii) the improvement and validation of models used forregional application. This article provides anoverview of the development of depositionmonitoring stations and the main results of thethree core sites, which were operated between1995 and 1998. Furthermore, the results of thedevelopment of a low cost monitoring system arepresented. Continuous measurements were made ofboth wet and dry deposition of sulphur andnitrogen components and base cations. The 4 yearsof data show a decrease in sulphur loads and notrend for the other components. It is shown thatthe surface affinities for sulphur depositionalso changed during the years, underpinning theneed for dry deposition monitoring. A conditionaltime average gradient system was successfullydeveloped and tested and provides a good meansfor low cost monitoring of dry deposition fluxes.The costs can be reduced by a factor of 3–4 without losing the accuracy of the annual average gas fluxes.  相似文献

In the context of international efforts to reduce the impactsof atmospheric NH3 and NH4 + (collectively, NHx), it is important to establish the link between NH3emissions and monitoring of NHx concentrations and deposition. This is equally relevant to situations where NH3emissions changes are certain (e.g. due to changed source sectoractivity), as to cases where NH3 abatement technologies havebeen implemented. Correct interpretation of adequate atmosphericmeasurements is essential, since monitoring data provide the onlymeans to evaluate trends in regional NH3 emissions.These issues have been reviewed using available measurements and modelling from nine countries. In addition to historic datasets,the analysis here considers countries where NH3 source sector activity changed (both increases and decreases) and countries where NH3 abatement policies have been implemented.In The Netherlands an `ammonia gap' was identified between the expected reduction and results of monitoring, and was attributedinitially to ineffectiveness of the abatement measures. The analysis here for a range of countries shows that atmospheric interactions complicate the expected changes, particularly sinceSO2 emissions have decreased at the same time, while at manysites the few years of available data show substantial inter-annual variation. It is concluded that networks need to beestablished that speciate between NH3 and aerosol NH4 +, in addition to providing wet deposition, and sample at sufficient sites for robust regional estimates to be established. Such measurements will be essential to monitor compliance of the international agreements on NH3 emission abatement.  相似文献

The dry deposition flux of NH3 to coniferous forest was determined by the micrometeorological gradient method using a 36 m high tower. Aerodynamic characteristics of the site were studied, using a second tower erected in the forest 100 m from the first. Fluxes and gradients of heat and momentum measured on both towers indicated a fairly homogeneous turbulent flow field over the studied area of the forest. Site specific flux profile functions for heat were derived from continuous measurements of turbulent fluxes and gradients. These functions were used to derive fluxes from the observed gradients of NH3. In total, eighty 90-min NH3 flux runs were performed. The results indicate a strong nonstomatal uptake of NH3 by the forest. A representative dry deposition velocity for NH3 of 3.6 cm(-1) s was derived. The annual average flux was roughly estimated to be equivalent to 50 kg N ha(-1) yr, significantly higher than the critical load for coniferous forest.  相似文献

Fluxes of NO, NO2 and O3 were determined over a drained marshland pasture in south-east England by using flux-gradient techniques. Nitric oxide was found to be emitted at rates of up to 40 ng m(-2) s(-1), the rate of emission being related to the magnitude of the eddy diffusivity. Nitrogen dioxide deposited at rates of up to 90 ng m(-2) s(-1) under the control of stomatal resistance, a clear diurnal cycle being observed. Minimum canopy resistance was of the order of 80 s m(-1). Ozone deposition was also controlled by stomatal resistance, the minimum canopy resistance being around 100 s m(-1) and fluxes reaching a maximum of 220 ng m(-2) s(-1). Corrections made to NO and NO2 fluxes to compensate for chemical reactions showed flux divergences of the order of 30% for NO and NO2, but these were not statistically significantly different from the measured fluxes. The pasture was found to be a net sink for nitrogen in the form of NOx.  相似文献

The performance of a Land Use Regression (LUR) model and a dispersion model (URBIS – URBis Information System) was compared in a Dutch urban area. For the Rijnmond area, i.e. Rotterdam and surroundings, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations for 2001 were estimated for nearly 70 000 centroids of a regular grid of 100 × 100 m.A LUR model based upon measurements carried out on 44 sites from the Dutch national monitoring network and upon Geographic Information System (GIS) predictor variables including traffic intensity, industry, population and residential land use was developed. Interpolation of regional background concentration measurements was used to obtain the regional background. The URBIS system was used to estimate NO2 concentrations using dispersion modelling. URBIS includes the CAR model (Calculation of Air pollution from Road traffic) to calculate concentrations of air pollutants near urban roads and Gaussian plume models to calculate air pollution levels near motorways and industrial sources. Background concentrations were accounted for using 1 × 1 km maps derived from monitoring and model calculations.Moderate agreement was found between the URBIS and LUR in calculating NO2 concentrations (R = 0.55). The predictions agreed well for the central part of the concentration distribution but differed substantially for the highest and lowest concentrations. The URBIS dispersion model performed better than the LUR model (R = 0.77 versus R = 0.47 respectively) in the comparison between measured and calculated concentrations on 18 validation sites. Differences can be understood because of the use of different regional background concentrations, inclusion of rather coarse land use category industry as a predictor variable in the LUR model and different treatment of conversion of NO to NO2.Moderate agreement was found between a dispersion model and a land use regression model in calculating annual average NO2 concentrations in an area with multiple sources. The dispersion model explained concentrations at validation sites better.  相似文献

Passive samplers were used from 1996 to 1999 in a dense network to monitorthe concentrations of ammonia in air, in four agricultural areas in The Netherlands. To show representative patterns, sampling was not made within 50 m of livestock buildings and stores. The concentration of ammonia varies typically between 10 and 40 g m-3 within a few kilometres in these areas. The interpretation of the measurements was supported by calculations with OPS, a Lagrangian dispersion model. Model calculations were based on a high-resolution database that included estimates of the ammonia emission of each farm in the area and emissions from surface application of manure at a 250 × 250 m scale. The model underestimated the observed ammonia concentrations by nearly a factor of two over most of the area. This result was attributed to underestimation of the ammonia emission in the models. And the ammonia emissions from field application of manure seem to be seriously underestimated. A detailed analysis of model results and measurements showed that the observed decrease of the ammonia concentration in the study period was partly due to changes in meteorological conditions during the study period and partly due to the reduced amount of manure applied in 1998.  相似文献

Atmospheric deposition may be an important source of persistent organic compounds (POP) and pesticides for the Dutch coastal and inland waters. Current estimates of the atmospheric input have been made using atmospheric dispersion models. The uncertainty is however large. A project was defined with the aim to assess the input on the basis of measurements. For a period of two years (1999-2001) a monitoring network was operated. At eighteen stations, located across the whole country, air and precipitation samples were taken on a weekly and monthly basis. In these samples the concentrations of pesticides, PCB's and PAH's were determined. Up to 50 different pesticides were observed in precipitation and air. The concentration of 17 of these in precipitation exceeded the maximum permissible level for surface water and 22 exceeded the standard for drinking water of 100 ng l(-1). The input from the atmosphere to Dutch inland waters appeared to be as large as the input of pesticides by other sources such as spray drift. Model calculations were also carried out to identify the sources of these compounds. The occurrence of atrazine could be related to emissions outside the Netherlands.  相似文献

A monitoring station for atmospheric deposition was designed and constructed. Three such stations were applied in a pilot project for a year on three sites (Speulder forest in The Netherlands, Auchencorth in Scotland and Melpitz in Germany) in different regions in Europe to estimate local inputs and to validate deposition models which are currently used or developed to estimate ecosystem specific deposition in Europe. Fluxes at Auchencorth Moss are lowest for all components, except for those much influenced by the sea as a source. As Melpitz is located far away from seas, these components are lowest at this site. Wet deposition is the dominant source of input at Auchencorth, whereas at Speulder forest, through its roughness and pollution climate, dry deposition is dominant. At this site dry deposition velocities are highest. Melpitz is a polluted site. Particularly sulphur deposition is high. It is recommended to equip several locations in Europe with intensive deposition monitoring methods. Such a network will be an extension of existing monitoring programmes on air pollution, such as that run by Eurepean Monitoring and Evaluation Programme for the long-range transmission of air pollutants in Europe (EMEP). The intensive monitoring locations should be selected based on pollution climates and type of vegetation, common in Europe.  相似文献
