In this article, the systems for the collection and intermediate processing of used beverage cans (UBCs) are compared and analyzed, focusing on the time taken and the cost of processing, the energy consumption, and the emissions of CO2, SOx, and NOx, during the process. We found that cases where the UBCs were crushed in the discharging process gave better results, and how the UBCs were collected was the most important factor. It was more desirable to treat UBCs in one place than in two places. When the transportation distance was longer, the pressed form of UBCs was more convenient. When the transportation distance was short, the original form, the crushed form, and the shredded form of UBCs were all suitable. That is, the contribution of the transportation process to the evaluation was large when the transport distance was long, and the contribution of the treatment process was large when the transport distance was short. 相似文献
Measurement of personal exposure to nitrogen dioxide for short and long term was made with a sensitive NO2 passive sampler by volunteer housewives and office workers in different seasons. These measurements were compared with the simultaneous measurement of outdoor and indoor concentration of the participants. A common result over all the measurements is the potential effect of using an unvented space heater to increase personal exposure. Mean personal exposure and indoor concentration are higher than outdoor levels elevated by the samples exposed to pollutant produced from the heater. Without an NO2 source indoors, the mean outdoor concentrations are always highest among the data of measurement. A time-weighted indoor/outdoor activity model gives modestly improved estimates of personal exposure over those predicted from measured indoor concentrations alone. 相似文献
We conducted a multicity time-series study using monitoring data to assess seasonal patterns of short-term ozone–mortality association among elderly aged 65 years and over in Japan. Daily exposure to ambient ozone was computed using hourly measurements of photochemical oxidants available at multiple monitoring stations in each city. Effects of ozone on daily all-cause non-accidental, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality were estimated using distributed lag linear models, controlling for confounding by temporal, day of the week, temperature, and flu epidemics. City-level effect estimates were combined using inverse variance meta-analysis. In spring and autumn, a 10-ppbv increase of daily maximum 8-h average ozone concentration in the previous 3 days was associated with 0.69 % (95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.27–1.10), 1.07 % (0.34–1.82), and 1.77 % (0.78–2.77) increases in daily all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality, respectively. Forward displacement of respiratory mortality was large during the cold season despite lower ozone concentration. Results were generally independent of fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide. Findings suggest significant mortality effects of short-term ozone exposure among the elderly during the moderate season. Those with underlying respiratory diseases were susceptible, even during winter. 相似文献
Developing nations have various problems regarding municipal solid waste (MSW). Therefore, to carry out a systematic review
of the MSW problems in the target area and to formulate a well-considered management plan, it is extremely important to understand
the present MSW flow in the region. One of the authors participated in the nine solid waste management (SWM) studies in developing
nations undertaken under the technical cooperation program of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Based on
these studies, this paper reviews the results of research in developing countries regarding different MSW streams, the factors
that cause the differences, and the elements considered to have the most impact on those streams. This research identifies
several issues regarding MSW streams in developing nations. The MSW generation rate per capita in developing countries is
generally said to grow in proportion to the GNP. However, the findings of this research show no correlation between the two;
instead, there is a relationship between the GNP and the collection rate. To formulate proper future MSW management plans
in countries with low collection rates, it is very important to forecast the rates of self-disposed and recycled waste, and
their fluctuations. These are affected by urban structure, collection services, etc.

Mercury enters into the environment or waste streams because it is present as an impurity in natural minerals. Mercury must be appropriately managed as an hazardous waste. In this study, a waste layer of artificial mercury sulfide mixed with incinerator ash and sewage sludge compost in a simulated landfill experiment for 5 years was analyzed using microscopic synchrotron X-ray to obtain basic knowledge of mercury behavior in a landfill. Mapping by synchrotron X-ray revealed the distribution of mercury-containing particles in the waste layer. In most cases, the movement of mercury sulfide was not considered significant even within a microscopic range; however, water flows could enhance the movement of mercury sulfide particles. When disposing of mercury sulfide, “concentrated placement” or solidification, rather than mixing with other wastes, was more effective at preventing mercury leaching in lysimeters. The chemical form of mercury sulfide in each lysimeter was confirmed by X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis, which showed that most of the mercury was present as metacinnabar and had not undergone any changes, indicating that it was extremely stable. The microscopic synchrotron X-ray analysis proved very useful for studying the behavior of mercury waste in a simulated landfill experiment.
