The effects of variable food supply on growth rate and feeding behaviour in two coexisting intertidal gastropods were examined
through field and laboratory experiments involving mark and recapture procedures, growth experiments under controlled food
supply and video observations of feeding. All cohorts of both Japeuthria species grew most in summer, with the highest growth rate being achieved by the youngest cohort of both sexes. In contrast,
almost all cohorts (except the youngest one) showed zero to negative growth in winter. The growth rates of Japeuthria species clearly varied depending on feeding frequencies and the initial size of individuals. Females of both species had
a significantly higher growth rate than males, though the difference became less marked with decreasing food supply. The total
time spent on feeding and the length of the first feeding bout generally increased as the duration of the interval between
meals was increased across treatments. From both the field growth experiment and the observations of feeding behaviour it
is clear that J. ferrea had a higher frequency of feeding than J. cingulata in the field; 1- to 3-d intervals of feeding frequency in the former and 3- to 6-d intervals in the latter. Most notably,
the two species showed a reversal in growth rates with changing conditions of food supply. When food was relatively abundant
J. ferrea achieved better growth than J. cingulata, but J. cingulata grew better than J. ferrea under low food supply. In view of the fact that J. ferrea seems to be competitively superior to J. cingulata under normal levels, the present observation that J. cingulata can perform better than J. ferrea when food availability is low gives an important advantage to the latter in terms of its coexistence with the former.

To determine whether the appearance of a reproductively parasitic tactic varies, and how this variation affects territorial
males of the Lake Tanganyika cichlid fish Telmatochromis vittatus, we examined the reproductive ecology of territorial males in Mtondwe and compared it with that of a neighboring Wonzye population,
where nest density differs from that at Mtondwe. In Wonzye, with high nest density, male tactics change with their body size
from a territorial to a non-territorial parasitic tactic called piracy in which they conquer several nests defended by territorial
males and take over the nests while females are spawning. These “pirate” males could decrease the costs incurred by travelling
among nests by exclusively targeting aggregations of nests in close proximity while avoiding separate nests. Territorial males
in Wonzye sacrifice the potential higher attractiveness offered by large nests and instead compete for nests farther from
neighbors on which pirates less frequently intrude. In contrast, the Mtondwe population had lower nest density and piracy
was absent. Given that the success of piracy depends on the close proximity of nests, nest density is likely responsible for
the observed variation in the occurrence of piracy between the two populations. Furthermore, in Mtondwe, territorial males
competed for larger nests and were smaller than the territorial males in Wonzye. Thus, this lower nest density may free territorial
males from the selection pressures for increased size caused by both defense against nest piracy and the need to develop into
pirates as they grow. 相似文献

The theoretical basis for matrix diffusion in fractured rocks and the methodology for the determination of diffusion coefficients in the laboratory are well established. One significant problem, however, remains in that it is difficult to quantify the degree of sample disturbance affecting the geometrical, geophysical and hydraulic properties of the rock matrix. A new technique, with in situ rock impregnation with resin, for examining the diffusion-accessible rock matrix has been developed and successfully adopted to the rock matrix behind a water-conducting fracture in host crystalline rocks at Nagra's Grimsel Test Site in Switzerland and JNC's Kamaishi In Situ Test Site in Japan. In line with the results of a large number of natural analogue and laboratory studies, the existence of an in situ interconnected pore network was substantiated. Matrix porosities determined on the laboratory samples from both the sites are 1.5-3 times higher than in situ values, irrespective of the technique applied. On the Grimsel granodiorite matrix, matrix porosity existing in situ and artefacts of stress release and physical disturbance, induced by sampling and sample preparation, were clearly distinguished, allowing in situ porosity to be quantified. Laboratory work with conventional techniques tends to overestimate the porosity of the rock matrix, hence leading to an overestimation of in situ matrix diffusion. The implications of these differences to a repository performance assessment are assessed with a couple of examples from existing assessments, and recommendations for future approaches to the examination of in situ matrix porosity are made. 相似文献

Why are reproductively parasitic fish males so small?—influence of tactic-specific selection 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Despite the wide prevalence of alternative reproductive tactics, little attention has been paid to why reproductively parasitic
males are so small. In this study, we tackled this issue in a shell-brooding fish Lamprologus callipterus. Sneaky ‘dwarf males’ of this fish remain much smaller than bourgeois conspecifics throughout their life and employ a unique
parasitic tactic, i.e. entering into a gastropod shell where a female is spawning, passing through the space between the female
and shell wall and staying behind her to ejaculate throughout the spawning event. Here, we tested the prediction that they
remain small to get past her through the shell spaces by interpopulation comparison. We showed, across populations, a negative
allometry for sexual size dimorphism, an exponential increase of female size with an increase in shell size and a negative
correlation between the magnitude of sexual size dimorphism and shell size. These results suggest that the inner spaces strongly
regulate dwarf male size. We conclude that the small bodies of dwarf males arise from adaptation to their unique reproductive
behaviour. 相似文献

Melting and stone production using MSW incinerated ash 总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17
Most of the municipal solid waste (MSW) in Japan is incinerated and the generated ash is landfilled. However, environmental pollution problems have increased and Japan has decreased final disposal sites for landfills. With the application of a melting system, the volume of incinerated ash can be reduced and the effective use of melted slag is being developed for use in civil engineering works. However, the low strength of melted slag as a vitreous structure has limited its effective use. As a solution for this deficiency, a technology to crystallize melted slag into higher strength produced stones was developed. With the joint cooperation of Chiba Prefecture and Kamagaya City, a demonstration plant for melting and stone production with a capacity of 4.8 tons of incinerator ash per day was constructed. The demonstration test was conducted from May 1998 to June 1999 with satisfactory results stated below. Long-term stable operation and performance of the plant have been confirmed and effective applications of produced stones have been demonstrated on a commercial scale. The results are as follows. 1. A stable, continuous operation and good quality produced stones have been confirmed by treating more than 750 tons of MSW incinerated ash. 2. More than 99.9% of dioxins contained in the incinerated ash were decomposed, and the concentration of dioxins in produced stones were less than the detection limit set by Japanese environmental standards. 3. Leaching values of hazardous heavy metals of produced stones sufficiently met the environmental standard on soil pollution of the Environment Agency with superior leaching behavior for the vitreous slag, thus confirming their safe applications. 4. The effective application of produced stones for aggregate was tested based on Japanese Industrial Standards and every figure of test results met the Japanese standard values. The use of produced stones as raw materials for permeable pavement blocks has been confirmed in commercial construction for a park in Chiba Prefecture. Asphalt use was also demonstrated by paving a commercial roadway in Kamagaya City. 相似文献

In the intertidal limpet Patelloida pygmaea, two distinctive morphs, the forms pygmaea and conulus, have been recorded. The former possesses a flat elongated shell, and the latter has an extremely high round shell. It has been observed in the field that pygmaea is found on oyster shells Crassostrea gigas. The form conulus uses an unusual substrate for attachment. It is found on the living shells of the intertidal gastropod Batillaria cumingi. Although conulus is normally found only on shells of Batillaria, it can also be found on oyster shells when pygmaea and Batillaria shells are not present in nature. An electrophoretic analysis of allozymes showed that these two forms are reproductively isolated from each other and coexist without gene exchange on the same mudflat. Laboratory experiments showed that pygmaea prefers oyster shells and conulus prefers Batillaria shells as substrates for attachment when both oyster and Batillaria shells are present. The form pygmaea did not attach to Batillaria shells, even when only Batillaria shells were available. However, conulus also attached to oyster shells when Batillaria shells were not available. The proportion of individuals of conulus that attached to oyster shells decreased significantly when pygmaea was attaching to the oyster shells. These results suggest that pygmaea is ecologically more specialized to living on oyster shells than conulus. 相似文献
