The consumption, disposal, material and chemical compositions of rechargeable electric torch wastes (RETWs) were investigated in Ibadan, Nigeria. Twenty-five RETWs of ten models were collected and disassembled. Their battery electrodes (BEs) and printed circuit boards (PCBs) were acid digested and leached using United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) method 3050B and USEPA Method 1311, respectively. The digests and extracts were analysed for total and extractable Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The US Test method (CPSC-CH-E 1002-08) was used for digestion of the plastic components. Two hundred questionnaires were distributed to users in Ibadan to determine their usage of RETs and their management when spent. The results indicated that BEs contributed the highest percentage (44 %) component, followed by plastic (38 %). Other components include metal, PCBs, glass and wire. Of the respondents, 61.9 % dispose their spent torches in dumpsites. The mean ± SD concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni in the BEs were 500 ± 109 g/kg, 3.94 ± 6.84 mg/kg, 0.33 ± 0.88 mg/kg, 1.68 ± 0.74 mg/kg respectively; in the PCBs, they were 684 ± 42 g/kg, 13.7 ± 17.8 mg/kg, 13.5 ± 10.2 mg/kg and 193 ± 437 mg/kg; and in the plastics, they were 14.1 g/kg, 5.33 mg/kg, 17 mg/kg, and 4.67 mg/kg respectively. The extractable Pb in BE (2670 mg/L) and PCBs (235 mg/L) exceeded the Toxicity Characteristics Leaching Procedure (TCLP) limit of 5 mg/L. RETWs present potential environmental problems in the absence of effective recycling.  相似文献

Monthly stream water calcium and Gran alkalinity concentration data from 11 sub-catchments of the Nether Beck in the English Lake District have been used to appraise the transferability of the Scottish, River Dee-based G-BASH model. Readily available riparian zone geochemistry and flow paths were used initially to predict minimum and mean stream water concentrations at the Nether Beck, based on calibration equations from the River Dee catchment data. Predicted values significantly exceeded observed values. Differences in runoff between the two areas, leading to a dilution effect in the Nether Beck, explained most of the difference between observed and predicted values. Greater acid deposition in the Lake District also reduced stream water Gran alkalinity concentrations in that area. If regional differences in precipitation, evapotranspiration and pollutant deposition are incorporated into the model, it may then be used reliably to predict catchment susceptibility to acidification over a wide regional (national) scale.  相似文献

Two surveys of nitrate-N concentrations in surface and ground water in Ogun and parts of Lagos and Oyo States of south-western Nigeria were undertaken between October 1997 and December 1998, and between July 2000 and May 2001 (covering both dry and rainy seasons). The study was conducted to ascertain the extent of nitrate-N pollution of the surface/ground water in some parts of the three states. Seventy-two water points (33 rivers/streams, 21 wells and 18 boreholes) were sampled three times during each of the two seasons. Nitrate-N was detected in all the river/stream samples analysed with concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 15.3 mg/l and 1.0 to 7.7 mg/l during the rainy and dry seasons, respectively (average value 2.7 and 2.4 mg/l for rainy and dry season, respectively). 98.5% of the rivers/streams sampling points contained nitrate-N in amounts equal to or less than 10 mg/l. 88.1% of wells and 97.2% of boreholes had a nitrate-N content less than 5 mg/l. Nitrate-N concentrations in the sampled wells ranged from 1.4 to 7.4 mg/l and 1.1 to 6.0 mg/l during the rainy and dry seasons, respectively (average value 2.6 and 2.2 mg/l, respectively). The sampled boreholes had a lower nitrate-N concentration ranging from 0.1 to 5.2 mg/l and from below the detection limit to 5.0 mg/l during the rainy and dry seasons, respectively (average value 1.8 and 1.6 mg/l, respectively). Nitrate-N concentrations in boreholes were below detection limit in 22% of the samples. Generally, for most of the sampling points, nitrate-N concentrations were slightly higher during the rainy season compared with the dry season. The present results indicated that nitrate-N concentrations in all the water points (except one) were below the World Health Organization (WHO) maximum acceptable limit in potable waters (10 mg/l). Therefore, contamination of the surface and ground water of the study area is not indicated. This study provides background data against which future changes in nitrate-N concentrations of surface and ground waters in the study area can be measured.  相似文献

The potential of CH4 (methane) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions based on a model of prevailing behavioural pattern of livestock waste management in Nigerian local farms was investigated in this paper. Livestock waste, from Sus domesticus, pig, and Gallus domesticus, poultry, were employed as substrates in the study which uses water from a fish rearing farm as the matrix medium to simulate wastewater pool/river environment. A substrate to fish-water ratio of 1:3 by mass was used in developed laboratory-size digesting reactor system with U-tube water displacement, to facilitate volumetric readings of gas production, for each mix of the livestock waste. Volumetric readings from these, at ambient temperature conditions in the retention time of 32 days, follow the Normal probability density function, in accordance with Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit criteria. These readings showed that CH4-containing gas as high as 67.3?×?10?3 dm3 was produced on the 14th day from the pig and 86.8?×?10?3 dm3 on the 13th day from the poultry substrates. The overall CH4-containing gas productions of 255.4?×?10?3 dm3/kg and 323.58?×?10?3 dm3/kg were observed for the pig and the poultry substrates, respectively. A 70% scale-up analysis, modelled from these results, for the nation yield potential emission of about 4 kg CH4 (that could be as potent as 84 kg CO2-equivalent) annually. The environmental implications on global warming and possible prospects of recoverable domestic benefits from the waste through the adoption of sustainable policy of livestock waste managements for mitigating the CH4 emissions in Nigerian local farms are presented.  相似文献
