Previous research suggests that although reproduction and testicular function in wild sifaka (Propithecus verreauxi) are highly seasonal, birth season elevations in fecal testosterone (T) in transferring males indicate that social factors may be as important as climatic factors in regulating reproductive function in sifaka. This paper examines the relationship of male dispersal and social status to the patterning of birth season aggression and testicular function in P. verreauxi at Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve, Madagascar. Behavioral and hormonal data were collected from a total of 38 adult males, 15 residing in seven stable groups and 23 living in eight unstable groups, yielding 186 fecal samples and 493 focal animal hours of observation. The results suggest that birth season elevations in fecal testosterone are the consequence of social disruption resulting from male movements between groups and the particular responses of individual males to dispersal events. Hormonal responses to dispersal events appear to precede behavioral responses and occasionally register reactions not concomitantly evident in the behavioral response, and may be predictive of future events. Hormonal reactions occurred primarily in resident alpha males, suggesting that they differ in their assessment of destabilizing influences, perhaps due to different reproductive opportunities and/or investment. These findings are important for the new insights they provide into the role of androgens in mediating male dispersal, life history, and reproductive strategies, and suggest that investigations of androgen-behavior interactions in free-ranging populations can be a powerful new tool for assessing the contextual and motivational basis of social behavior. DOI: 10.1111/j.1752‐1688.2011.00621.x Abstract: Bankfull regional curves that relate channel dimensions and discharge to watershed drainage area are useful tools for assisting in the correct identification of bankfull elevation and in stream restoration and reconstruction. This study assessed 28 stable streams located in two physiographic regions of Kentucky: the Inner Bluegrass and the Outer Bluegrass. Bankfull channel dimensions, discharge, and return period as well as average channel slope, median bed material size, sinuosity, Rosgen stream classification, and percent impervious area were determined. Significant relationships were found between drainage area and the bankfull characteristics of cross‐sectional area, width, mean depth, and discharge for both the Inner Bluegrass and Outer Bluegrass regions (α = 0.05). It was also found that the percent impervious area in a watershed had minimal effect on bankfull dimensions, which is attributed to the well‐vegetated nature of the streambanks, cohesive streambank materials, and bedrock control. No significant differences between any of the Inner Bluegrass and Outer Bluegrass regional curves were found (α = 0.05). Comparisons were made between the Inner Bluegrass and Outer Bluegrass curves and others developed in karst‐influenced areas in the Eastern United States. Although few significant differences were found between the regional curves for bankfull discharge and width, a number of the curves differed with regards to bankfull cross‐sectional area and mean depth.  相似文献

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a common contaminant associated with nuclear reactors and fuel processing. Improper disposal at facilities in and and semiarid regions has contaminated underlying vadose zones and aquifers. The objectives of this study were to assess the potential for immobilizing Cr(VI) using a native microbial community to reduce soluble Cr(VI) to insoluble Cr(III) under conditions similar to those in the vadose zone, and to evaluate the potential for enhancing biological Cr(VI) reduction through nutrient addition. Batch microcosm and unsaturated flow column experiments were performed. Native microbial communities in subsurface sediments with no prior Cr(VI) exposure were shown to be capable of Cr(VI) reduction. In both the batch and column experiments, Cr(VI) reduction and loss from the aqueous phase were enhanced by adding high levels of both nitrate (NO3-) and organic C (molasses). Nutrient amendments resulted in up to 87% reduction of the initial 67 mg L(-1) Cr(VI) in an unsaturated batch experiment. Molasses and nitrate additions to 15 cm long unsaturated flow columns receiving 65 mg L(-1) Cr(VI) resulted in microbially mediated reduction and immobilization of 10% of the Cr during a 45-d experiment. All of the immobilized Cr was in the form of Cr(III), as shown by XANES analysis. This suggests that biostimulation of microbial Cr(VI) reduction in vadose zones by nutrient amendment is a promising strategy, and that immobilization of close to 100% of Cr contamination could be achieved in a thick vadose zone with longer flow paths and longer contact times than in this experiment.  相似文献
