In a number of metropolitan areas of the country, failure to attain national primary air quality standards for total suspended particulates (TSP) has fostered a detailed reexamination of the nature of the urban TSP problem. Reentrained dust from paved streets and other traffic-related emissions are now recognized as major sources of TSP in urban areas. While numerous reports and studies have examined this subject, some significant aspects of urban road dust have not been studied in enough detail, if at all. Examples of this are the effects of gutters and pavement composition and shape. This paper discusses those areas of the urban road dust problem that are felt to require further attention and outlines the priorities with which the data should be obtained.  相似文献

Groundwater contaminated with hexavalent chromium (Cr+6) and chlorinated volatile organic compounds (cVOCs) presents unique in situ remedial challenges in an oxygen‐rich environment. On one hand, chemical oxidation would be effective in treating the cVOCs; however, it would not be appropriate to treat Cr+6. Biological treatment may be appropriate to treat the Cr+6; however, the cVOC degradation pathway within these mixed plumes is currently following an abiotic pathway with little to no daughter‐product production. Thus, a blended approach was needed to treat both constituents in situ in an effort to avoid a long‐term, costly pump‐and‐treat solution. This article evaluates an in situ biogeochemical stabilization/reduction strategy by injecting an inorganic carbon‐based remedial additive into the geologic and hydrogeologic environment to decrease concentrations within the commingled Cr+6 and cVOC plume. The concept involves creating favorable redox reducing conditions to shift the groundwater geochemical equilibrium from the more toxic Cr+6 to the less toxic trivalent chromium (Cr+3), with the final outcome being a conversion to chrome oxide that molecularly fixes to the soil grains. In addition, reducing conditions developed for chromium reduction should result in an increase in the available natural formation iron that should further enhance the natural abiotic reduction of cVOCs. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Storage of cattle slurry is a significant source of ammonia (NH3) emissions. Emissions can be reduced by covering slurry stores, but this can incur significant costs, as well as practical and technical difficulties. In this pilot-scale study, slurry was stored in small tanks (500 L) and the effectiveness of natural crust development for reducing NH3 emissions was assessed in a series of experiments. Also, factors important in crust development were investigated. Measurements were made of crust thickness and specially adapted tank lids were used to measure NH3 emissions. Slurry dry matter (DM) content was the most important factor influencing crust formation, with no crust formation on slurries with a DM content of <1%. Generally, crusts began to form within the first 10 to 20 d of storage, at which time NH3 emission rates would decrease. The formation of a natural crust reduced NH3 emissions by approximately 50%. The type of bedding used in the free stall barn did not influence crust formation, nor did ambient temperature or air-flow rate across the slurry surface. There was a large difference in crust formation between slurries from cattle fed a corn (Zea mays L.) silage-based diet and those fed a grass silage-based diet, although dietary differences were confounded with bedding differences. The inclusion of a corn starch and glucose additive promoted crust formation and reduced NH3 emission. The maintenance of a manageable crust on cattle slurry stores is recommended as a cost-effective means of abating NH3 emissions from this phase of slurry management.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The main purpose of Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) is to improve the quality of supply chain management strategies and environmental performance. As per current statistics, the chemical industry is growing fast in Bangladesh. In order to compete for global competition, GSCM is essential in this sector. This paper proposes a systematic approach of structural framework whose aim is to enhance the probability of constructive implementation of GSCM in the field chemical industry in Bangladesh. Therefore, this framework evaluates the appropriate interrelationship along with the drivers of GSCM in the chemical industry. In total, eight drivers were finalized from an associated literature review with the help of survey and by taking expert opinions via the Delphi methodology. In addition to MICMAC analysis, the driving and the dependence powers for all the drivers were determined. Moreover, the structural frameworks for the drivers were developed by means of total interpretive structural modeling (TISM) technique. As a result, the findings indicate that the most significant driver was supplier pressure and willingness and the most important barrier was high cost. Finally, the main objective of this research is expected to help industrial managers to evaluate and understand the critical areas where they should emphasize to implement GSCM in the chemical industry.  相似文献
