A phosphorus (P) index for pastures was developed to write nutrient management plans that determine how much P can be applied to a given field. The objectives of this study were to (i) evaluate and compare the P index for pastures, particularly the P source component, and an environmental threshold soil test P level by conducting rainfall simulations on contrasting soils under various management scenarios; and (ii) evaluate the P index for pastures on field-scale watersheds. Poultry litter was applied to 12 small plots on each of six farms based on either an environmental threshold soil test P level or on the P index for pastures, and P runoff was evaluated using rainfall simulators. The P index was also evaluated from two small (0.405 ha) watersheds that had been fertilized annually with poultry litter since 1995. Results from the small plot study showed that soil test P alone was a poor predictor of P concentrations in runoff water following poultry litter applications. The relationship between P in runoff and the amount of soluble P applied was highly significant. Furthermore, P concentrations in runoff from plots with and without litter applications were significantly correlated to P index values. Studies on pastures receiving natural rainfall and annual poultry litter applications indicated that the P index for pastures predicted P loss accurately without calibration (y = 1.16x - 0.23, r(2) = 0.83). These data indicate that the P index for pastures can accurately assess the risk of P loss from fields receiving poultry litter applications in Arkansas and provide a more realistic risk assessment than threshold soil test P levels. 相似文献

Currently, several state and federal agencies are proposing upper limits on soil test phosphorus (P), above which animal manures cannot be applied, based on the assumption that high P concentrations in runoff are due to high soil test P. Recent studies show that other factors are more indicative of P concentrations in runoff from areas where manure is being applied. The original P index was developed as an alternative P management tool incorporating factors affecting both the source and transport of P. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of multiple variables on P concentrations in runoff water and to construct a P source component of a P index for pastures that incorporates these effects. The evaluated variables were: (i) soil test P, (ii) soluble P in poultry litter, (iii) P in poultry diets, (iv) fertilizer type, and (v) poultry litter application rate. Field studies with simulated rainfall showed that P runoff was affected by the amount of soluble P applied in the fertilizer source. Before manure applications, soil test P was directly related to soluble P concentrations in runoff water. However, soil test P had little effect on P runoff after animal manure was applied. Unlike most other P indices, weighting factors of the P source components in the P index for pastures are based on results from runoff studies conducted under various management scenarios. As a result, weighting factors for the P source potential variables are well justified. A modification of the P index using scientific data should strengthen the ability of the P index concept to evaluate locations and management alternatives for P losses. 相似文献

Feeding ecology of juvenile green turtles (Chelonia mydas) was studied from 2008 to 2011 at Samborombón Bay (35°30′–36°30′S, Argentina), combining data on digestive tract examination and stable isotope analysis through a Bayesian mixing model. We found that animal matter, in particular gelatinous plankton, was consumed in large proportions compared to herbivorous food items such as terrestrial plants and macroalgae. This diet is facilitated by the high abundance of gelatinous plankton in the region, thus confirming the adaptive foraging behaviour of the juveniles according to prey abundance in the SW Atlantic. To our knowledge, this is the first study to employ this combination of techniques and to conclusively demonstrate that animal matter, in particular gelatinous plankton, is important in the diet of the neritic green sea turtles. 相似文献

Seasonal and spatial variations of carbon and nitrogen distribution in the surface sediments of the Gulf of Riga, Baltic Sea 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The variations in concentrations of carbon and nitrogen in surface sediments of the Gulf of Riga were investigated between December 1993 and January 1995. The sediment samples were taken nine times during this period at two sampling sites. One sampling site, G5, exhibited high abundance of burrowing amphipods, whereas at the second site, T3, the number of macrozoobenthic organisms was comparatively small. Similar vertical profiles of mean sediment dry-weight concentrations of total carbon (TC) and total nitrogen (TN) were obtained at both sites G5 and T3. However, during autumn winter considerable differences of TC and TN concentrations in surface sediments (0-2 cm) between sites were observed. This was probably the effect of differences in the bioturbation level. During summer, when decline in numbers of amphipods were recorded, the vertical profiles of TC and TN at site G5 were similar to those at site T3. Significant differences between months were detected for TN at site T3 reflecting sedimentation of spring and autumn blooms in April and late October-early November, respectively. This was supported also by lower atomic C/N ratios in surface sediments during corresponding sampling events. 相似文献

The vertical and spatial concentration trends of biogenic silica (BSi) were investigated in a variety of sediment types from the Gulf of Riga. These trends were compared with the concentration of organic carbon to examine how variations in the mass sedimentation and the dissolution rate of BSi versus bacterially mediated oxidation of organic matter affect the distribution of BSi in different environments. The effects of important physical and biogeochemical factors on the distribution of BSi have also been examined. The concentration of BSi in the surface sediment at accumulation bottoms ranges between 0.8–1.5 mmol/g with an average concentration of 1.1 mmol/g. This is about two times the concentration that has been reported in similar sediments in the open Baltic proper. Much lower concentrations were measured in erosion and transitional areas; on average around 0.2 and 0.6 mmol/g, respectively. A comparison between recent sedimentation rate measurements (210Pb) and concentrations of BSi within different accumulation bottoms suggests an approximate inverse relationship with each other. The importance of variation in the sedimentation rate on the surface BSi concentration is supported by the fact that higher Corg/BSi ratios are found in periphery accumulation zones close to transition areas (larger supply of carbon rich allochthonous material that dilutes settled amounts of BSi) than at accumulation bottoms in the central part of the Gulf. The Corg/BSi ratio in the sediment is always lower than in living siliceous algae which shows that the microbial degradation of organic carbon is always greater than the inorganic dissolution of BSi, irrespective of the assemblage of silica and non‐silica species. The general vertical concentration pattern at accumulation sites showed a decreased concentration with increased depth down to 2–6 cm below seafloor where the concentration gradually equalizes. The concentration in the equalizing zone is on average about 20% lower than in the uppermost centimeter. This implies that the main part of the BSi entering the accumulation bottoms is permanently buried and that a great amount of silica already has been released during halmyrolysis. The spatial and vertical BSi trends at sites in transitional and erosional areas reflects prevailing sedimentation conditions with a low concentration in sections with a dominance of sand and gravel (no deposition of fine material) and a higher concentration in the sections containing stiff glacial clay (former accumulation area). The average annual burial amount of BSi in the Gulf has been estimated to be around 50 000 tons of which most is buried in accumulation bottoms outside the central muddy part of the Gulf. The buried amount is about 60% of the annual river load of silica. 相似文献

Microbial grazing by two species of meiofaunal harpacticoid copepods (Heteropsyllus nunni and Thompsonula hyaenae) was determined by uptake of radioactive labels following their introduction into natural sediments from a low-energy intertidal site in Florida (29°5440N; 84°3130W) in May 1986. Grazing was related to three methods of radioactive-label introduction: injection, porewater replacement, and slurry. Uptake of label by harpacticoids was examined using two dual-label combinations, 3H-thymidine/14C-bicarbonate and 3H-thymidine/14C-acetate. The injection and porewater-replacement methods yielded statistically indistinguishable results. Results obtained by the slurry method differed significantly from the other two methods. We suggest that the unique results obtained in the slurry method were a consequence of the disruption of microbial-meiofaunal spatial relationships. 相似文献

Trace metal distribution in sediments of the Pearl River Estuary and the surrounding coastal area, South China 总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11

Surface sediments and sediment cores collected at the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) and its surrounding coastal area were analysed for total metal concentrations, chemical partitioning, and Pb isotopic compositions. The distribution of Cu, Cr, Pb, and Zn demonstrated a typical diffusion pattern from the land to the direction of the sea. Two hotspots of trace metal contamination were located at the mixed zone between freshwater and marine waters. The enrichment of metals in the sediments could be attributed to the deposition of the dissolved and particulate trace metals in the water column at the estuarine area. The similar Pb isotopic signatures of the sediments at the PRE and its surrounding coastal area offered strong evidence that the PRE was a major source of trace metals to the adjacent coastal area. Slightly lower (206)Pb/(207)Pb ratios in the coastal sediments may indicate other inputs of Pb in addition to the PRE sources, including the inputs from Hong Kong and other parts of the region. 相似文献

Distribution and diagenesis of organic and inorganic phosphorus in sediments of the Baltic proper. 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Measurements of the distribution of organic and inorganic phosphorus in the sediment have been performed at 10 sites, in the central-northern Baltic proper. Variations in deposition environment and environmental properties, such as redox chemistry and bottom water dynamics, apparently affect the distribution by altering the supply and diagenesis of organic and inorganic phosphorus constituents. The C/P and the N/P ratios of the sediment are highly divergent (higher) from the average Redfield ratio for marine living organisms at all examined sites. This indicates preferential autolytic organic phosphorus degradation and/or (deeper down in the sediment) altered input of terrestrial organic matter. The redox condition seems to affect the degradation efficiency of the organic matter since higher concentrations of C(org) occur at anoxic conditions than at oxic. At two sites significant amounts of C(inorg) have been detected indicating authigenic precipitation of carbonates. Further, authigenic precipitation of phosphate minerals also seems to occur at certain environmental conditions. 相似文献

Microbial food partitioning by three species of benthic copepods 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Using radioactively labeled bacteria and photoautotrophs in undisturbed sediment cores, we show that three cooccurring species of benthic copepods feed on different microbial food sources in their natural environment. Specifically, Thompsonula hyaenae feeds on photoautotrophs, Halicyclops coulli feeds on bacteria, and Zausodes arenicolus feeds on both photoautotrophs and bacteria. Species of benthic copepods feed differently from one another in the field, and meiofaunal species' distributions could be influenced by distributions of their preferred microbial food. 相似文献
