Alaska's program for rebuilding salmon stock is calledfishery enhancement. Hatchery technology can produce dramatic increases in numbers of fish homing to selected streams. The Sheep Creek Hatchery is unusually efficient— it increases a fish run by a factor of 3000 and produces salmon at 9–11c/kg by minimizing mechanical energy inputs and human labor. The design harnesses the force of gravity and capitalizes on instinctual behavior of the fish. Since migratory fish collect protein from ocean pasturage, the technology increases the share of this resource collected and concentrated for harvest in a specific country or region. While small seaside hatcheries can solve biological problems of depleted fish stocks, economic and political considerations may preclude efficient utilization of the protein produced. Further, the potential for one state or country to concentrate fish near its shores poses new dilemmas for international regulation of harvests.  相似文献

In October 1977, Southwestern Public Service Company executed a contract with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that called for a study to assess the performance of a fabric filter system installed on a large utility boiler that utilizes low sulfur Western coal. The project is now into its second year and the objectives of this paper are to describe the scope and intent of the study, as well as to report progress to date. In addition, some of the difficulties that we have encountered are discussed. Although some of these problems have resulted in procedural changes, the intent of the study has not been altered. This paper describes work being done in specific areas with which both the EPA and Southwestern are connected. These include fabric assessment, data collection, selection and installation of instrumentation, and overall fabric filter system performance. Results of the first performance test are also reviewed and the installation of a pilot baghouse is discussed.  相似文献

Previously we have shown that 1-arylpropane-1,2-diols are catabolic products of L-phenylalanine during idiophasic metabolism of B. adusta that are stereoselectively biosynthesized from a C(7)-unit (ring+benzylic carbon) and a C(2)-unit as predominantly erythro 1R, 2S enantiomers. In order to probe the mechanism of 1-arylpropane-1,2-diol formation, the products of the incubation of isotopically labelled aromatic aldehydes as substrates with Bjerkandera adusta (DAOM 215869) have been characterized. The aromatic aldehydes were benzaldehyde (ring D(5)) and 4-methoxy- and 4-hydroxybenzaldehydes (ring 13C(6)). These aldehydes were all stereoselectively incorporated into the corresponding 1-arylpropane-1,2-diols, including the chloro analogues, as well as into the corresponding alpha-ketols (phenyl acetyl carbinols (PAC's) and 2-hydroxy propiophenones (2-HPP's)) the presumed precursors of the diols. Benzoic acid (ring D(5)) was likewise incorporated into the diols, chlorodiols and alpha-ketols.These results lead us to conclude that the aromatic aldehydes benzaldehyde, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde are likely C(7)-unit precursors in the carboligation reaction(s) that leads to 1-arylpropane-1,2-diol biosynthesis. The metabolic role of the diols remains to be elucidated but they may be important intermediates in CAM (chlorinated anisyl metabolite) aldehyde-alcohol cycling and also act as substrates for the chlorination/hydroxylation enzymes yet to be identified in white rot fungi.  相似文献

Two strains of the basidiomycete, Bjerkandera adusta (DAOM 215869 and BOS55) produce in static liquid culture, phenyl, veratryl, anisyl and chloroanisyl metabolites (CAM's) (alcohols, acids and aldehydes) as well as a series of compounds not previously known to be produced by Bjerkandera species: 1-phenyl, 1-anisyl, 1-(3-chloro-4-methoxy) and 1-(3,5-dichloro-4-methoxy) propan-1,2-diols, predominantly as erythro diastereomers with IR, 2S absolute configurations. 1-Anisyl-propan-1,2-diol and 1-(3,5-dichloro-4-methoxy)-propan-1,2-diol are new metabolites for which the names Bjerkanderol A and B, respectively, are proposed. Experiments with static liquid cultures supplied with 13C6- and 13C9-L-phenylalanine showed that all identified aromatic compounds (with the exception of phenol) can be derived from L-phenylalanine. For the aryl propane diols, the 13C label appeared only in the phenyl ring and the benzylic carbon, suggesting a stereoselective re-synthesis from a C7 and a C2-unit, likely aromatic aldehyde and decarboxylated pyruvate, respectively. Other compounds newly discovered to be derived from phenylalanine by this white rot fungus include phenylacetaldehyde and phenylpyruvic, phenylacetic, phenyllactic, mandelic and phenyl glyoxylic (benzoyl formic) acids. For both strains, cultures supplied with Na37Cl showed incorporation of 37Cl in all identified chlorometabolites. Veratryl alcohol and the CAM alcohols, which occur in both strains and can be derived from L-phenylalanine (all 13C-labelled), have reported important physiological functions in this white rot fungus. Possible mechanisms for their formation through the newly discovered compounds are discussed.  相似文献

The capacity for long-distance dispersal is an important factor in determining the spread of invasive species. For algae, positive buoyancy generally is correlated with increased dispersal potential, and the light environment has been previously identified as a possible determinant of buoyancy in several species. We examined the effect of light intensity on the buoyancy of fragments of the invasive green alga Codium fragile ssp. fragile. Under natural and controlled conditions, the buoyancy of samples taken from the thallus tip was higher than those from near the holdfast. Both laboratory and field experiments also showed that buoyancy was dynamic and switched from positive to negative under reduced light intensity, but this change required several days. We also observed seasonal changes in buoyancy, presumably due to natural variations in light intensity, with the buoyancy of fragments washed up on the shore highest in mid-summer. These results show that buoyancy is a dynamic property of the C. fragile ssp. fragile thallus and suggest that buoyant fragments contribute to long-range dispersal and accelerated regional spread of this invader. This finding suggests that dispersal is more likely during conditions of high light intensity and illustrates the need to understand how variations in the natural environment can affect the dispersal potential of invasive species.  相似文献

One of the most important challenges facing business is shaping the role of senior management in corporate environmental performance. In some leading companies, the CEO or chairman takes the initiative to carefully define his or her role because of a strong personal commitment, a keen grasp of the business incentives, in response to past problems, or because of a combination of these. In other companies, even where corporate policies genuinely support and promote corporate environmental, health, and safety programs, there may still be inaction or reluctance on the part of top management to participate or get involved. This management posture may work for a few more years, but no longer than that—and could quickly become a major detriment to any company's ongoing market success or viability. This article will focus on a strategy for getting top management involved in your company's programs and, where they are already involved, for sharing some insights we have gained from our work with a number of companies where top management has taken a strong role in environmental issues and has established precedence for what can work well.  相似文献

Abstract: A pervious concrete infiltration basin was installed on the campus of Villanova University in August 2002. A study was undertaken to determine what contaminants, if any, were introduced to the soils underlying the site as a result of this best management practice (BMP). The average infiltration rate at the site is approximately 10?4 cm/s. The drainage area (5,208 m2) consists of grassy surfaces (36%), standard concrete/asphalt (30%), and roof surfaces (30%) that directly connect to the infiltration beds via downspouts and storm sewers. Composite samples of infiltrated stormwater were collected from the vadose zone using soil moisture suction devices. Discrete samples were collected from a port within an infiltration bed and a downspout from a roof surface. Samples from 17 storms were analyzed for pH, conductivity, and concentrations of suspended solids, dissolved solids, chloride, copper, and total nitrogen. Copper and chloride were the two constituents of concern at this site. Copper was introduced to the system from the roof, while chloride was introduced from deicing practices. Copper was not found in porewater beneath 0.3 m and the chloride was not significant enough to impact the ground water. This research indicates that with proper siting, an infiltration BMP will not adversely impact the ground water.  相似文献
