Size at maturity, fecundity, and reproductive periodicity were estimated for the spotted ratfish, Hydrolagus colliei (Lay and Bennett, 1839), off the coast of California, Oregon, and Washington. Maximum body size and size at median maturity
were greater for females than males. Skeletal muscle concentrations of the steroid hormones testosterone (T) and estradiol
(E2) predicted similar, but slightly smaller sizes at maturity than the morphological criterion. Stage of maturity for males
was estimated identically using internal organs or external secondary sexual characters, thus allowing non-lethal maturity
assessments. Size at median maturity was greater north of Point Conception for females, and north of Cape Mendocino for males.
Peak parturition occurred from May to October, with increased concentrations of E2 in skeletal muscle of females correlating with ovarian recrudescence during November to February. No significant seasonal
trends in female T were apparent, but mean female 11-ketotestosterone (11KT) was 300% greater in April than any other month
during the parturition season. There was a marginal evidence for increased number and size of ova with maternal size. Extrapolation
of the hypothesized 6 to 8-month egg-laying season to observed mean parturition rates of captive specimens yielded an estimated
annual fecundity of 19.5–28.9 egg cases. Differences in fecundity among higher taxonomic classifications of chondrichthyans
were detected with chimaeriform fishes more fecund than lamniform, myliobatiform, squaliform, and rhinobatiform fishes, and
less fecund than rajiform fishes.

This study begins by examining the dimensionality of the Type A behavior pattern using four frequently employed self-report measures. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses identified nine meaningful factors (dimensions) across the four scales. A measure of hostility was added since hostility has been found to be highly predictive of coronary heart disease and originally was included in Rosenman, Swan and Carmelli's (1988) definition of Type A behavior. Supporting the utility of examining Type A behavior as a multidimensional personality construct, the Type A dimensions and hostility reveal differential effects on academic performance and a general health or psychiatric disorder symptom profile. Achievement striving is positively related to academic performance, and time pressure, anger, and hostility seem to significantly increase somatic complaints, anxiety, and depression. In addition, there is support for Price's (1982) conceptualization that some cognitive beliefs and fears promote the development and maintenance of Type A behavior. As expected, the belief and fear that one must prove oneself or else be judged unworthy relates positively to work involvement and achievement striving, but it also directly and positively impacts the overt Type A behaviors of hurry and time pressure and two psychiatric health disorder symptoms, performance dysfunction and anxiety. Lastly, implications and future research directions are discussed. 相似文献

Sex change in marine teleost fishes is commonly regulated by social factors. In species that exhibit protogynous sex change,
such as the bluebanded goby Lythrypnus dalli, the most dominant female typically initiates sex change when a male is removed from the social group. Females can use visual,
chemical or tactile cues to assess the presence or absence of a male. The primary goal of our study was to determine whether
the olfactory and visual presence of a male versus its behavioural interactions with females were important for mediating
sex change. We exposed females to three different treatments: absence of a male, presence of a male that could physically
interact with her and presence of a male behind a barrier that allowed visual and olfactory interactions but prohibited physical
interactions. Sex change occurred in the absence of a male but not in the presence of a male that could physically interact
with the female. The presence of a male behind the barrier did not prevent sex change but affected the timing of sex change.
Season appeared to affect the latency to initiate male typical courtship, with a delay at the end of the reproductive season
only when the male was present behind the barrier. We discuss the seasonal results in terms of L. dalli life history and the potential benefits and costs of changing sex late in the season in the presence or absence of aggressive
reinforcement by the male. Our results identify direct behavioural interactions as an important proximate mechanism in the
social regulation of sex change in L. dalli. 相似文献

This research presents an analysis of a goal setting questionnaire developed by Locke and Latham (1984). The Locke and Latham measure attempts to assess the core goal attributes of ‘specificity’ and ‘difficulty’, as well as other attributes of the goal setting process (such as perceptions about ‘performance feedback’, ‘supervisor support’, ‘conflict’ and ‘stress’). The psychometric properties of the measure were examined using respondents from employees of a large, west-coast electronics organization. A principal components analysis extracted 10 meaningful factors and identified a need for additional items. Results generally supported the meaningfulness of the goal setting factors and provide important directions for future research. 相似文献
