Prenatal diagnosis of 5p deletion syndrome following abnormally low maternal serum human chorionic gonadotrophin

Prenatal diagnosis of 5p deletion syndrome, or cri du chat, following an abnormally low measurement of a screening of serum human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), is reported. Karyotyping following amniocentesis revealed a terminal deletion in the short arm of one chromosome 5. The pregnancy was electively terminated. 5p deletion syndrome has been described with abnormally high hCG levels and normal hCG levels. This is the first report of its association with abnormally low levels. The association between chromosomal abnormalities and hCG is discussed. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Prenatal diagnosis of thrombocytopenia absent radius syndrome by ultrasound and cordocentesis

The prenatal diagnosis of thrombocytopenia absent radius (TAR) syndrome, utilizing ultrasound and cordocentesis, is described. To our knowledge, this represents the first prenatal diagnosis of this condition in an index case. The diagnostic evaluation of a fetus with upper extremity limb reduction defects is discussed.     

Preserving the maritime cultural heritage of the Mediterranean,a cradle of cultures,religions and civilizations—the holy land perspective

The article presents the main ancient marine sites of the Holy Land, points the endangered sites and the needed preservation activities. The ancient cultural heritage existing on the Mediterranean shores reflect important events in the history of humanity. It represents numerous important cultures, religions and traditions. This coastal and underwater heritage is rapidly eroded due to sea level rise, global changes and rapid coastal development. Actions taken by the state of Israel to rescue, protect and preserve the marine cultural heritage include: underwater rescue surveys, coastal erosion monitoring, risk assessment surveys and pilot projects for protecting and preserving the sea front of the antique sites at Akko, Apollonia and Ashkelon. Israel proposes that the Mediterranean and European countries will establish a collaborative project aimed at mapping the cultural recourses and establishing master plans for the protection and preservation of the marine and coastal cultural heritage of the Mediterranean.     

The invasive venomous striped eel catfish <Emphasis Type="Italic">Plotosus</Emphasis><Emphasis Type="Italic">lineatus</Emphasis> in the Levant: possible mechanisms facilitating its rapid invasional success

The venomous striped eel catfish Plotosus lineatus was first recorded in the Mediterranean in 2002. Within 1–3 years, it has spread throughout the entire Israeli coast. We have studied its spatiotemporal distribution patterns via trawl surveys in order to determine the scale and extent of this invasion. Findings indicate that a population explosion has occurred, and the catfish now inhabits all sandy and muddy substrates up to ca 80 m. P. lineatus was found to recruit in autumn in the Mediterranean and displays similar or improved growth patterns and condition factor compared to those found in its native habitat. We discuss the possible ecological mechanisms responsible for its success: Benthic invaders are among its main prey items, suggesting an invasional meltdown process. We also point to the decline of indigenous species using its trophic and behavioral–ecological niche and hypothesize that they might be outcompeted and displaced by the catfish.
