In this article, we present an overview of the current circumstances of the trade of recyclable resources, i.e. end-of-life products, parts and materials, and recycled resources in Asian countries, indicating that pollution potential is spreading there due to the improper handling of those resources. Conversely, Japan’s domestic recycling activities are shown to be adversely affected by the increasing outflow of those resources on one hand and the sudden stagnation of trade on the other. Considering that cross-border resource circulation in Asia is unavoidable and desirable in certain conditions, we propose a feasible and sustainable transaction scheme of recyclable and recycled resources, exemplified by a project which was carried out by the city of Kitakyushu and the city of Tianjin.  相似文献

The state of mixture of light-absorbing carbonaceous particles was investigated in relation to light absorption properties using electron microscopic examinations, black carbon (BC) analyses of quartz filter by thermal/optical reflectance (TOR) method, measurements with two continuous light-absorbing photometers at a suburban site of Tsukuba, about 60 km northeast of Tokyo. The volume fraction of water-soluble material (?) in individual particles is important for assessing particulate light-absorbing and/or scattering of atmospheric aerosols. The values of ? in BC particles were evaluated by electron micrographs before and after dialysis (extraction) of water-soluble material. The mass absorption coefficient (MAC in units of m2 g?1) tended to increase with increasing the average ? in BC particles with the radius range of 0.05–0.5 μm. Thus, our results indicate that coatings of water-soluble material around BC particles can enhance the absorption of solar radiation. Moreover, the single scattering albedo (SSA) will increase because a large amount of coating material will scatter more light.  相似文献

Helice tridens (De Haan) (Grapsidae) and Macrophthalmus japonicus (De Haan) (Ocypodidae) build separate burrows in reed marshes and muddy tidal flats, respectively, in the brackish-water estuaries of northeast Japan (38°11N, 141°48E). Habitat segregation between burrows of these two species was analysed by comparing the density of burrows of both species in their natural habitats, and on tidal flats subjected to various types of artificial treatment, in the summer of 1981 and 1982. Baskets, containing many stones, were placed on the ground in the reed marsh, tidal flat and creek and attracted many individuals of H. tridens, but not M. japonicus. When stones were placed on an area of tidal flat, H. tridens frequently formed burrows at the border between the stones and mud, suggesting that burrowing of H. tridens was related to the presence of solid substances lying on the ground, such as stones and shoots of the reed Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. In closed systems on the tidal flat and reed marsh, H. tridens and M. japonicus were able to construct burrows in both substrata regardless of high or low frequency. Moreover, it was recognized that H. tridens prevented the burrowing of M. japonicus in these closed systems. These results suggested that habitat segregation between H. tridens and M. japonicus burrows was caused primarily by an exclusive interaction between individuals of these two species.  相似文献

As a part of the effort to understand the structure of long-range transported aerosol plumes and local pollution, aerosol observations monitored the mass concentrations and number-size distributions during the period August 2006 to July 2009 near the top of Mt. Haruna (1365 m), an isolated mountain in the Kanto Plain in Japan. The mass concentrations observed at Mt. Haruna and plain sites showed a seasonal variation with a maximum in spring and summer, respectively. The spring peaks in aerosols at Mt. Haruna were probably caused by long-range transport of mineral dust and anthropogenic particles from the Asian continent. The summer peaks at the plain sites was attributed to local pollution from the Tokyo metropolitan area. Three examples of 2007 Asian dust events were investigated to show that aerosols may be dispersed in a complicated three-dimensional structure and that delayed arrivals of the dust plumes at plain sites compared to Mt. Haruna were not a rare case. Because of the boundary layer being stable at night, the dust layer was advected eastward without the vertical mixing before sunrise. This study suggests that after thermal convection activated by sunlight during daytime Asian dust transported in the free troposphere may be brought down into the atmospheric boundary layer, increasing the dust concentration there.  相似文献

This article examines the present circumstances of recycling of end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment discarded in Japan from the domestic and international viewpoints of material circulation. It is pointed out that some of the discarded items are absorbed into an invisible flow by informal economic activities, being exported in the form of secondhand equipment and secondary materials. Since the equipment has a pollution potential as well as a resource potential, it is anticipated that the pollution potential may possibly be realized if the equipment is mishandled at recycling plants in developing countries. To reduce the invisible flow as much as possible and to reduce the pollution potential from diffusion in developing countries, a policy tool such as extended producer responsibility should be applied to retailers of the equipment, as well as to producers.  相似文献

Although the colour of butterflies attracts the most attention, the waterproofing properties of their wings are also extremely interesting. Most butterfly wings are considered “super-hydrophobic” because the contact angle (CA) with a water drop exceeds 150°. Usually, butterfly wings are covered with strongly overlapping scales; however, in the case of transparent or translucent wings, scale cover is reduced; thus, the hydrophobicity could be affected. Here, we present a comparative analysis of wing hydrophobicity and its dependence on morphology for two species with translucent wings Parantica sita (Nymphalidae) and Parnassius glacialis (Papilionidae). These species have very different life histories: P. sita lives for up to 6 months as an adult and migrates over long distance, whereas P. glacialis lives for less than 1 month and does not migrate. We measured the water CA and analysed wing morphology with scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. P. sita has super-hydrophobic wing surfaces, with CA > 160°, whereas P. glacialis did not (CA = 100–135°). Specialised scales were found on the translucent portions of P. sita wings. These scales were ovoid and much thinner than common scales, erect at about 30°, and leaving up to 80% of the wing surface uncovered. The underlying bare wing surface had a remarkable pattern of ridges and knobs. P. glacialis also had over 80% of the wing surface uncovered, but the scales were either setae-like or spade-like. The bare surface of the wing had an irregular wavy smooth pattern. We suggest a mode of action that allows this super-hydrophobic effect with an incompletely covered wing surface. The scales bend, but do not collapse, under the pressure of a water droplet, and the elastic recovery of the structure at the borders of the droplet allows a high apparent CA. Thus, P. sita can be translucent without losing its waterproof properties. This characteristic is likely necessary for the long life and migration of this species. This is the first study of some of the effects on the hydrophobicity of translucency through scales’ cover reduction in butterfly wings and on the morphology associated with improved waterproofing. The purpose of this paper is to analyze problems concerning household waste disposal and material flow by means of a Leontief–Sraffa–von Neumann framework. We treat household residuals as if they were traded and valued in a daily market transaction. Thus, we can calculate the shadow price of waste, making a value system compatible with a quantity system. We show the theoretical existence of an equilibrium solution between a value system and a quantity system. This means that if there is a well-organized market for waste treatment, the flow of waste is smoothly regulated by a price adjustment mechanism. Household residuals are shown to be negatively valued if a certain constraint is satisfied. Thus, those residuals are bads instead of goods. Interestingly enough, household waste treatment in the market does not affect the price formation of normal commodities, since waste treatment services or recycling services are nonbasics in Sraffa's sense. Partly due to this character, the Hawkins–Simon condition is required only for normal production sectors, and not for recycling sectors. In the final section, we have dropped the assumption that household residuals are always treated as waste, since some residuals may be traded as normal commodities. Applying the Gale–Nikaido–Debreu lemma to a newly defined excess demand function, we have proved that our model can accommodate such a situation. By this analysis, we have shown that the goods/bads (waste) relationship is a relative matter, being dependent upon economic conditions. The changes in demand for, or supply of, residuals may turn some goods into bads, and vice versa. Received: October 5, 1999 / Accepted: October 18, 1999  相似文献
