Circulating placental [human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), Schwangerschafts protein 1 (SP1), pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A), decidual (pregnancy protein) 12 (PP12), and fetal alphafetoprotein (AFP)] proteins were measured immediately before and within 1 h in 18 women undergoing diagnostic chorionic villus sampling (CVS) in the first trimester. An elevation of serum AFP levels was consistently seen, while fluctuations in excess of 10 per cent of the pre-CVS levels of SP1 and PP12 were seen in the majority of patients. Fluctuations in hCG and PAPP-A were consistently less than 10 per cent of pre-CVS values. Post-CVS changes in levels were not apparently associated with any feature of the technique, the pregnancy, or its outcome (one missed abortion). As feto-maternal haemorrhage is a common event, anti-D should be offered to rhesus-negative women undergoing CVS. In the prediction of subsequent miscarriage, only hCG and PAPP-A measurements should be considered.  相似文献

In the last years numerous epidemiological studies were carried out to evaluate the effects of particulate matter on human health. In industrialized areas, anthropogenic activities highly contribute to the fine and ultrafine particle concentrations. Then, it is important to characterize the evolution of particle size distribution and chemical composition near these emission points. Waste incineration represents a favorable technique for reducing the waste volume. However, in the past, municipal waste incinerators (MWIs) had a bad reputation due to the emission of toxic combustion byproducts. Consequently, the risk perception of the people living near MWIs is very high even if in Western countries waste incineration has nowadays to be considered a relatively clean process from a technical point of view. The study here presented has an exemplary meaning for developing appropriate management and control strategies for air quality in the surrounding of MWIs and to perform exposure assessment for populations involved. Environment particles were continuously measured through a SMPS/APS system over 12 months. The monitoring site represents a downwind receptor of a typical MWI. Furthermore, elements and organic fractions were measured by means of the Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis and using dichotomous and high volume samplers. Annual mean values of 8.6 × 103 ± 3.7 × 102 part. cm?3 and 31.1 ± 9.0 μg m?3 were found for number and mass concentration, typical of a rural site. Most of the elements can be attributed to long-range transport from other natural and/or anthropogenic sources. Finally, the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons present low concentrations with a mean value of 24.6 ng m?3.  相似文献

A large number of particles and gaseous products are generated by waste combustion processes. Of particular importance are the ultrafine particles (less than 0.1 microm in aerodynamic diameter) that are emitted in large quantities from all the combustion sources. Recent findings of toxicological and epidemiological studies indicate that fine and ultrafine particles could represent health and environmental risks. Quantifying particulate emissions from combustion sources is important: (i) to examine the source status in compliance with regulations; (ii) to create inventories of such emissions at local, regional and national levels, for developing appropriate management and control strategies in relation to air quality; (iii) to predict ambient air quality in the areas involved at the source and (iv) to perform source apportionment and exposure assessment for the human populations and/or ecological systems involved. In order to control and mitigate the particles in the view of health and environmental risk reduction, a good understanding of the relative and absolute contribution from the emission sources to the airborne concentrations is necessary. For these purposes, the concentration and size distribution of particles in terms of mass and number in a waste gas of a municipal waste incineration plant were measured in the stack gas. The mass concentrations obtained are well below the imposed daily threshold value for both incineration lines and the mass size distribution is on average very stable. The total number concentrations are between 1 x 10(5) and 2 x 10(5)particles/cm(3) and are on average relatively stable from one test to another. The measured values and the comparison with other point sources show a very low total number concentration of particles at the stack gas, revealing the importance of the flue gas treatment also for ultrafine particles. Also in respect to linear sources (high and light duty vehicles), the comparison shows a negligible emission in terms of the total number of particles.  相似文献

Endocrine disrupters are of substantial concern, in large part because effects of these compounds on the growth and development of many aquatic organisms are unknown. We examined toxic effects of three substances (ethylbenzene, nonylphenol, and bisphenol A), that are known to be hormonally active in many animals, on growth and development of two species of freshwater sponge. A common developmental abnormality was observed when sponges were treated with each of these compounds. The three compounds also caused significant reductions in growth rates. Lower concentrations resulted in malformed water vascular systems in several replicates. The utility of freshwater sponge bioassays is discussed as it relates to understanding possible mechanisms of action of endocrine disrupters on aquatic invertebrates.  相似文献

Ultrafine particles (UFP, diameter < 100 nm), as reported in recent findings of toxicological and epidemiological studies, could represent health and environmental risks. Motor vehicle emissions usually constitute the most significant source of UFP in an urban environment. Number, surface and mass concentration of particles were determined at increasing distances from the most important Italian road: the “Autostrada del Sole” A1 highway. Particles in the size range from 0.0059 to 20 μm were measured with a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and an Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) spectrometers.The A1 highway was selected because it is characterized by two different traffic conditions: a daily and a weekly traffic. During the weekdays the average traffic flow was about 50 vehicles min?1 with more than 30% of vehicles being heavy-duty (HD) diesel trucks. The weekly traffic component is characterized by an increased traffic up to approximately 100 vehicles min?1 during Monday mornings and Friday afternoons because of light-duty vehicles, with substantial reduction of the percentage of HD diesel trucks (typically only 10%).The purpose of this study is the characterization of the A1 highway in terms of evolution of particle size distribution (PSD) and total number concentration at different distances from the highway. This analysis is interesting because Italian traffic presents a higher i) percentage of diesel light-duty vehicles and ii) mean traffic speed in respect to US and Australian traffics. Particle number, surface and mass, exponentially decreases as one moves away from the freeway, whereas UFP number concentration measured at 400 m downwind from the freeway is indistinguishable from upwind background concentration.  相似文献

Incinerators are claimed to be responsible of particle and gaseous emissions: to this purpose Best Available Techniques (BAT) are used in the flue-gas treatment sections leading to pollutant emission lower than established threshold limit values. As regard particle emission, only a mass-based threshold limit is required by the regulatory authorities. However; in the last years the attention of medical experts moved from coarse and fine particles towards ultrafine particles (UFPs; diameter less than 0.1 microm), mainly emitted by combustion processes. According to toxicological and epidemiological studies, ultrafine particles could represent a risk for health and environment. Therefore, it is necessary to quantify particle emissions from incinerators also to perform an exposure assessment for the human populations living in their surrounding areas. A further topic to be stressed in the UFP emission from incinerators is the particle filtration efficiency as function of different flue-gas treatment sections. In fact, it could be somehow important to know which particle filtration method is able to assure high abatement efficiency also in terms of UFPs. To this purpose, in the present work experimental results in terms of ultrafine particle emissions from several incineration plants are reported. Experimental campaigns were carried out in the period 2007-2010 by measuring UFP number distributions and total concentrations at the stack of five plants through condensation particle counters and mobility particle sizer spectrometers. Average total particle number concentrations ranging from 0.4 x 10(3) to 6.0 x 10(3) particles cm(-3) were measured at the stack of the analyzed plants. Further experimental campaigns were performed to characterize particle levels before the fabric filters in two of the analyzed plants in order to deepen their particle reduction effect; particle concentrations higher than 1 x 10(7) particles cm(-3) were measured, leading to filtration efficiency greater than 99.99%.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to quantify exposure to particles emitted by wood-fired ovens in pizzerias. Overall, 15 microenvironments were chosen and analyzed in a 14-month experimental campaign. Particle number concentration and distribution were measured simultaneously using a Condensation Particle Counter (CPC), a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS), an Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS). The surface area and mass distributions and concentrations, as well as the estimation of lung deposition surface area and PM1 were evaluated using the SMPS-APS system with dosimetric models, by taking into account the presence of aggregates on the basis of the Idealized Aggregate (IA) theory. The fraction of inhaled particles deposited in the respiratory system and different fractions of particulate matter were also measured by means of a Nanoparticle Surface Area Monitor (NSAM) and a photometer (DustTrak DRX), respectively. In this way, supplementary data were obtained during the monitoring of trends inside the pizzerias. We found that surface area and PM1 particle concentrations in pizzerias can be very high, especially when compared to other critical microenvironments, such as the transport hubs. During pizza cooking under normal ventilation conditions, concentrations were found up to 74, 70 and 23 times higher than background levels for number, surface area and PM1, respectively. A key parameter is the oven shape factor, defined as the ratio between the size of the face opening in respect to the diameter of the semicircular oven door, and particular attention must also be paid to hood efficiency.  相似文献

Waste combustion processes are responsible of particles and gaseous emissions. Referring to the particle emission, in the last years specific attention was paid to ultrafine particles (UFPs, diameter less than 0.1 μm), mainly emitted by combustion processes. In fact, recent findings of toxicological and epidemiological studies indicate that fine and ultrafine particles could represent a risk for health and environment. Therefore, it is necessary to quantify particle emissions from incinerators also to perform an exposure assessment for the human populations living in their surrounding areas.To these purposes, in the present work an experimental campaign aimed to monitor UFPs was carried out at the incineration plant in San Vittore del Lazio (Italy). Particle size distributions and total concentrations were measured both at the stack and before the fabric filter inlet in order to evaluate the removal efficiency of the filter in terms of UFPs. A chemical characterization of UFPs in terms of heavy metal concentration was performed through a nuclear method, i.e. Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA), as well as a mineralogical investigation was carried out through a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) equipped with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) in order to evaluate shape, crystalline state and mineral compound of sampled particles.Maximum values of 2.7 × 107 part. cm−3 and 2.0 × 103 part. cm−3 were found, respectively, for number concentration before and after the fabric filter showing a very high efficiency in particle removing by the fabric filter. With regard to heavy metal concentrations, the elements with higher boiling temperature present higher concentrations at lower diameters showing a not complete evaporation in the combustion section and the consequent condensation of semi-volatile compounds on solid nuclei. In terms of mineralogical and morphological analysis, the most abundant compounds found in samples collected before the fabric filter are Na–K–Pb oxides followed by phyllosilicates, otherwise, different oxides of comparable abundance were detected in the samples collected at the stack.  相似文献
