Solvent microextraction (SME) was applied to the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from spiked and real environmental soil samples with different matrices. Soil sample was mixed with 7 mL of acetone and 14 mL of water to allow partitioning of the PAHs from the soil to the liquid phase. A 2 microL octane drop suspended from a microsyringe needle tip was then immersed into the stirred solution-soil mixture for extraction. After an 11 min extraction, the octane drop was withdrawn into the syringe and injected directly into the GC for identification and quantification. The whole analysis procedure took 27 min, with an extraction time of 11 min, and a GC separation time of 16 min. A second extraction could be undertaken whilst the GC is running, hence the GC run time currently limits the sample throughput. In this method, a small amount of organic solvent was used for the extraction process, which produced little waste. The limits of detection for lower molecular weight (< 230) PAHs range from 0.13 to 0.36 mg kg-1, and for higher molecular weight (> 250) PAHs are estimated to be between 0.5 and 1.0 mg kg-1, with RSD values generally under 20%. Due to the small volumes of organic solvent used, the consumable cost per extraction is only US$ 0.12. This is the first report of the application of SME to solid samples, and the first report of the use of SME for the analysis of PAHs.  相似文献

Although natural environments can help promote health, they also contain a number of dangers. This study attempted to examine how variations in the physical structure of a simulated natural environment influenced perceptions of both overall and specific types of danger, fear and preference before exploring the relationships between these variables. Three simulated walks through a natural environment differing in levels of prospect-refuge were created for the study. Respondents were randomly assigned to one of the conditions and asked to imagine taking the walk for real. In support of the typology, the results found that the walks with higher levels of prospect-refuge (higher visibility, fewer hiding places and more accessibility) were perceived as less dangerous and fearful and more preferred than walks with lower levels of prospect-refuge. However despite levels of prospect-refuge appearing to impact on the perceived likelihood of encountering a physical danger or becoming lost, they were not found to impact on the perception of encountering a social danger.  相似文献

Attitudes in developing countries with respect to private investment in natural resources have changed substantially in recent years. Countries must now compete for such investment by ensuring that policies pertaining to state participation, financing, marketing and taxation of mining ventures provide the investor with returns that are commensurate with the risks taken. Governments must also be prepared to help the investor compete on world markets through lower capital and operating costs. This entails granting exemptions of customs, excise and value added taxes as well as providing for policies on taxation, government participation, industrial relations, safety and environment, and procurement and personnel that are in line with international mining industry standards. Efforts to promote mining sector investment through the strengthening of technical ministries, preparation of basic geological and project information, investment symposia and an international mining council can be helpful in bringing opportunities to the attention of the investment community. But, these efforts can only succeed if the policy changes now being put into place continue to evolve and contribute to an atmosphere in which entrepreneurship and private investment can flourish.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The objective of the study was to evaluate alternative land developments around New Hampshire lakes. Alternative development patterns, evaluated by their impacts on the lake area environment and area economy, included residential patterns, commercial patterns, and combinations of these two types. Phosphorus loading of the lake water was used as a proxy variable for changes in the lake water quality. Commercial developments yielded the highest revenues to the town and the local area. It also attracted the most lake users to the area as well as contributing the largest phosphorus loading in the lake waters. Residential developments, although contributing high revenues to the businessmen in the area, yielded less net income to the town. Phosphorus loading levels from residential developments were much lower than lake phosphorus loading by commercial developments.  相似文献

Male chicks weighing 700 to 900 g. received an acute or eight doses IG of 60 or 40 mg/kg ethylene chlorohydrin (ECH) respectively and were sacrificed eighteen hours after the last dose. Mitochondrial elongation of fatty acids was decreased significantly while fatty acid synthetase activity was not significantly affected by ECH treatment. Cytochrome c oxidase activity in fresh whole liver homogenate was significantly higher in chicks subjected to acute exposure with ECH when compared to the controls. Upon freezing and thawing of homogenates, cytochrome c oxidase activity increased significantly in the control group but was unchanged in the ECH group which suggests that the mitochondrial membrane integrity is compromised by the ECH treatment. Serum and liver triglyceride levels were significantly elevated in both the single and multiple ECH dose groups. Liver to body weight ratios were significantly higher in both treatment groups when compared to their controls. Histological examination of the liver of ECH-treated chicks showed cytoplasmic clearing of the cells but no vacuolization or centrilobular necrosis. Serum isocitrate dehydrogenase levels were significantly higher in the multiple treatment ECH group than in the control group.  相似文献

HBB (hexabromobenzene) and HFB (hexafluorobenzene) were tested for their teratogenic potential in CD-1 mice. HBB and HFB were administered to pregnant mice from the 6th to the 16th day of gestation by gastric intubation. Neither HBB nor HFB were teratogenic or fetotoxic at doses up to 98.6 mg HBB/kg and 65.3 mg HFB/kg. No maternal toxicity was noted. HBB concentration in the fetuses indicated little, if any accumulation. No HFB was detected in the fetal or maternal tissues 24 hours after the last dose.  相似文献

An increasing human population is placing greater demand on soil resources, and as a result degradation is taking place in many regions of the world. This is critical because soils perform a number of essential processes including supporting food and fiber production, influencing air quality through interaction with the atmosphere, and serving as a medium for storage and purification of water. The soil quality concept was introduced to complement soil science research by making our understanding of soils more complete and helping guide the use and allocation of labor, energy, fiscal, and other inputs as agriculture intensifies and expands to meet increasing world demands. Soil quality thus provides a unifying concept for educating professionals, producers, and the public about the important processes that soils perform. It also provides an assessment tool for evaluating current management practices and comparing alternative management practices. Soil attributes comprising a minimum data set have been identified, and both laboratory and field methods have been developed for measuring them. A soil quality index is being developed to normalize measured soil quality indicator data and generate a numeric value that can be used to compare various management practices or to assess management-induced changes over time. Using previously published data, we evaluated the soil quality index as a tool to assess a wide range of management practices in the Northern Great Plains. The index ranked the treatments: grazed fertilized tame pasture > moderately grazed > ungrazed > heavily grazed > annual cropping with no-tillage > conventionally tilled crop-fallow which agrees with the way they were subjectively ranked in the publications. The soil quality index shows potential for use as a management assessment tool.  相似文献

Laboratory, pilot, and full-scale experiments were used to evaluate and optimize the ISOTECSM remedial process at a warehousing facility in Union, New Jersey. Based on modified Fenton's oxidative chemistry, the ISOTECSM process uses a proprietary catalytic agent that delays formation of reactive hydroxyl radicals. This allows adequate dispersion of the hydroxyl radicals, which is an oxidizing agent, throughout a contaminant plume. Ground-water at the site was contaminated with high levels of gasoline and waste oil constituents, principally BTEX and MTBE. Bench scale microcosm studies were used to evaluate the appropriate site-specific stoichiometric relationships between catalyst, stabilizers, and oxidizers; the effect of contaminant type and concentration; and the pH optima. Based on results of the laboratory studies, a pilot-scale study was performed at the site. One injection point for catalyst, stabilizers, and oxidant was installed in the contaminated zone at the site, with one hydraulically connected downgradient well used for monitoring. A single treatment of the reagents in the optimal stoichiometry determined from the laboratory study was injected in-situ over a period of three days. A 98.5 percent reduction in volatile organics was observed in the area treated, with the radial extent of treatment estimated to be approximately 20 feet, based on the presence of hydroxyl radicals detected in hydraulically connected areas and at the surface. The full-scale process employed six injection points and three treatment cycles over a three-month period. Subsequent to treatment, contaminant levels were either nondetectable or were reduced to below applicable New Jersey groundwater standards, with regulatory closure on the site achieved in less than one year.  相似文献
