Water tables are strictly controlled throughout much of the Netherlands. Higher water tables could permit the restoration of wetland ecosystems. Deriving benefits from this requires the spatial matching of physical planning, eco-hydrological processes, and economic activities. This paper reports on a study combining spatial analysis and disciplinary integration to assess management strategies for the Vecht river basin in the Netherlands. The paper addresses two research questions. How can the information generated by spatial models be condensed into performance indicators for the evaluation of strategies? How can spatial information be retained in the evaluation, and does this lead to different rankings and/or insights? Procedures for the construction of performance indicators for three criteria – net present value, environmental quality and spatial equity – are presented. The evaluation concludes that recreation and higher water tables provide a means for restoration, recouping of costs, and stimulating regional incomes. Maintenance of spatial detail led to different insights, and in particular indicated uncertainty about this conclusion.  相似文献

In September 2003 specimens of the sympagic amphipod Gammarus wilkitzkii were sampled in drifting pack ice above 50 m water depth and in the pelagic/benthic environment beneath in the coastal waters off Svalbard (Norway). Abundance values ranged between 1.5 and 8 individuals m–2 for the pelagic/benthic and the sympagic environments, respectively, and showed corresponding sex ratios of 1:1.4, favoring males. In the ice a significantly higher number of juveniles prevailed. In contrast, ovigerous females were more abundant among pelagic/benthic living specimens. Approximately 25% of the individuals hosted ciliated epibionts of the genera Ephelota, Cryptacineta, Acineta, Podophrya (all suctoria), and Epistylis (peritrichia). Cryptacineta and Ephelota were the most abundant epibionts on this amphipod species. Female specimens of G. wilkitzkii showed the highest degree of infestation (>2,100 individual epibionts per amphipod specimen: indE/A) followed by juveniles (>1,200 indE/A) and males (>220 indE/A). Highest densities of epibionts were found on anterior body parts with the antennae bearing up to 130 individuals. This is the first sighting of epibionts on crustacea from the sympagic environment. We interpret them as biomarkers that indicate the existence of sympago–benthic coupling processes between the ice and the underlying waters and the seafloor. The population structure and the proportion of infested specimens are equal for the amphipods sampled from both the sympagic and the pelagic/benthic environment, indicating the existence of exchange (coupling) processes between the two habitats. Considering the annual ice cycle, local ice drift patterns, and the shallow water depth in the sampling area, we hypothesize that ice amphipods spend ice-free periods near the seafloor where they may serve as basibionts for protozoans and eventually re-colonize the ice with the onset of ice formation. Our observations strongly emphasize that shallow coastal areas serve as both retention (rather than sink) areas for ice fauna during ice-free periods, and as stepping-stones for re-colonizing the ice when the ice is formed in winter.Communicated by M. Rove beetles of the genus Stenus Latreille and the genus Dianous Leach possess pygidial glands containing a multifunctional secretion of piperidine and pyridine-derived alkaloids as well as several terpenes. One important character of this secretion is the spreading potential of its different compounds, stenusine, norstenusine, 3-(2-methyl-1-butenyl)pyridine, cicindeloine, α-pinene, 1,8-cineole and 6-methyl-5-heptene-2-one. The individual secretion composition enables the beetles to skim rapidly and far over the water surface, even when just a small amount of secretion is emitted. Ethological investigations of several Stenus species revealed that the skimming ability, skimming velocity and the skimming behaviour differ between the Stenus species. These differences can be linked to varied habitat claims and secretion saving mechanisms. By means of tensiometer measurements using the pendant drop method, the spreading pressure of all secretion constituents as well as some naturally identical beetle secretions on the water surface could be established. The compound 3-(2-methyl-1-butenyl)pyridine excelled stenusine believed to date to be mainly responsible for skimming relating to its surface activity. The naturally identical secretions are not subject to synergistic effects of the single compounds concerning the spreading potential. Furthermore, evolutionary aspects of the Steninae’s pygidial gland secretion are discussed.  相似文献

It has been suggested that differences in body size between consumer and resource species may have important implications for interaction strengths, population dynamics, and eventually food web structure, function, and evolution. Still, the general distribution of consumer-'resource body-size ratios in real ecosystems, and whether they vary systematically among habitats or broad taxonomic groups, is poorly understood. Using a unique global database on consumer and resource body sizes, we show that the mean body-size ratios of aquatic herbivorous and detritivorous consumers are several orders of magnitude larger than those of carnivorous predators. Carnivorous predator-prey body-size ratios vary across different habitats and predator and prey types (invertebrates, ectotherm, and endotherm vertebrates). Predator-prey body-size ratios are on average significantly higher (1) in freshwater habitats than in marine or terrestrial habitats, (2) for vertebrate than for invertebrate predators, and (3) for invertebrate than for ectotherm vertebrate prey. If recent studies that relate body-size ratios to interaction strengths are general, our results suggest that mean consumer-resource interaction strengths may vary systematically across different habitat categories and consumer types.  相似文献

The acute whole sediment bioassay with the estuarine and marine amphipod Corophium volutator (Pallas) is broadly used within Europe. Hitherto, the test is carried out with field-collected animals. In order to provide a more standardized and continuously available test organism reproduction and growth experiments were performed for a period of one year in laboratory under simulated summer conditions (light/dark 16:8 at 15, 19, and 23 degrees C). C. volutator was the first time reproduced successfully in laboratory for several generations and independent from its natural life cycle also in winter. The females produced two to three broods with a mean number of 96 offspring. A mean growth rate of 0.07 mm per day was determined at 15 degrees C. The reproduction and growth experiments provide consequently the essential base for the development of a chronic toxicity test with C. volutator.  相似文献
