The present study investigated the contribution of environmental factors to the accumulation of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in earthworms, beetles and woodlice, and framed within an exposure assessment of the European hedgehog. Soil and invertebrate samples were collected in three distinct habitat types. Results showed habitat-specific differences in soil and invertebrate metal concentrations and bioaccumulation factors when normalized to soil metal concentration. Further multiple regression analysis showed residual variability (habitat differences) in bioaccumulation that could not be fully explained by differences in soil metal contamination, pH or organic carbon (OC). Therefore, the study demonstrated that in bioaccumulation studies involving terrestrial invertebrates or in risk assessment of metals, it is not sufficient to differentiate habitat types on general soil characteristics such as pH and/or OC alone. Furthermore, simple generic soil risk assessments for Cd and Cu showed that risk characterization was more accurate when performed in a habitat-specific way.  相似文献

We examined the temporal variation of lysosomal enzyme activities and lysosomal membrane stability in two stocks of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis L., 1758) from the Magdalen Islands which differ in their susceptibility to summer mass-mortality. The activity of lysosomal enzymes reflects the autolytic capacity which could be used during the transfer of reserves between storage and reproductive tissues or for mobilisation of reserves for energy requirements. The peak of lysosomal enzyme activities in mantle tissue in June 1992 probably was related with autolysis of storage cells to support maturation of the developing gametes. A second peak of lysosomal enzyme activity which occurred in mid- August of 1992 and 1993 may help to cover energetic requirements of maintenance metabolism during this period of high temperatures and reduced food quality. Measures of the destabilization of lysosomal membranes in the digestive gland confirmed that mussels showed a significant stress response in mid-August. Mussels from the stock with a higher susceptibility to summer mortality underwent a longer period of stress and accumulated less glycogen between spawning and the stressful period in mid-August than mussels from the more resistant stock. In conclusion, our field observations demonstrate high activities of lysosomes not only in spawning periods but also during stressful periods of high temperatures and reduced food quality. In the living cell transfer ribonucleic acids (tRNAs) serve for the transfer of information from genes to proteins. In this article evidence will be presented showing that changes of particular tRNA modifications cause alterations in gene expression, when an organism is exposed to a metabolic stress, e.g. limitation of oxygen or nutrients. tRNA modifications seem to be important to adapt cells to environmental changes. These mechanisms of adaptation are considered to have developed as survival strategies in microorganisms especially when oxygen accumulated in the atmosphere.  相似文献

The sexy son hypothesis suggests that females obtain future fitness benefits from mating with polygynous males through the inheritance by their sons of traits contributing to mating success. We tested this hypothesis in the facultatively polygynous European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) in two ways. We first compared sons of monogynous and polygynous free-living males for their abilities in nest site acquisition and female-directed behaviors in controlled aviary tests. We then investigated eggs laid in monogynous and polygynous matings for concentrations of maternal steroid hormones that could affect behavioral differentiation of sons. Sons of polygynous fathers defended more nest boxes and produced more courtship song than sons of monogynous fathers. Mean concentrations of maternal androstenedione (A4), 5-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), testosterone (T), and 17-estradiol (E) in yolks were not affected by mating status. However, the within-clutch pattern of A4 depended on mating status, with higher concentrations in last than in first eggs of clutches of monogynous but not polygynous matings. These results suggest that (1) sons may inherit from their fathers behavioral qualities for the successful acquisition of nest sites and attraction of mates; (2) differential exposure to maternal steroid hormones during development in the egg is unlikely the cause of the behavioral differences between adult sons of monogynous and polygynous fathers; and (3) females adjust the within-clutch pattern of androgen to mating status, possibly in response to the expected contribution of their mate to nestling care.  相似文献

The role of hair and spines of the European hedgehog as non-destructive monitoring tools of metal (Ag, Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn) and As pollution in terrestrial ecosystems was investigated. Our results showed that mean pollution levels of a random sample of hedgehogs in Flanders are low to moderate. Yet, individual hedgehogs may be at risk for metal toxicity. Tissue distribution analyses (hair, spines, liver, kidney, muscle and fat tissue) indicated that metals and As may reach considerable concentrations in external tissues, such as hair and spines. Positive relationships were observed between concentrations in hair and those in liver, kidney and muscle for Al, Co, Cr, Cu, and Pb (0.43 < r < 0.85). Spine concentrations were positively related to liver, kidney and muscle concentrations for Cd, Co, Cr, Cu and Pb (0.37 < r < 0.62). Hair Ag, As, Fe and Zn and spine Ag, Al, As and Fe were related to metal concentrations in one or two of the investigated internal tissues (0.31 < r < 0.45). The regression models presented here may be used to predict metal and As concentrations in internal tissues of hedgehogs when concentrations in hair or spines are available. The present study demonstrated the possibility of using hair and spines for non-destructive monitoring of metal and As pollution in hedgehogs.  相似文献

In fast, glycolytic muscles, oxidative phosphorylation presumably facilitates recuperation from exhaustive exercise and supports growth and maintenance metabolism. Given the shifts in pH with extensive glycolytic activity, the pH optima of mitochondrial processes should indicate whether mitochondria are adapted for recuperation from exercise or for growth and maintenance. We examined this question using mitochondria from the phasic adductor muscle of the scallop, Euvola (Pecten) ziczac, collected from the Golfo de Cariaco, Venezuela in 1992 and 1993. Scallop muscle mitochondria showed well coupled oxidation of glutamate and pyruvate at pH 7.0 and 6.4. The preferred substrates (glutamate, pyruvate and succinate) were oxidized at approximately 40 nmol O2 min-1 mg-1 mitochondrial protein at 25°C, while malate and glutamine were oxidized at 75% and proline at 30% of these rates. Neither palmitoyl carnitine nor aspartate were oxidized. Succinate oxidation was not coupled to ADP utilization at pH 7.0 but was somewhat coupled at pH 6.4. Generally, State 3 rates of oxygen uptake were similar at pH 7.0 and 6.4. Maximal rates of oxidation of glutamate and pyruvate showed broad pH optima. For both glutamate and pyruvate, the highest respiratory control ratio (RCR) values were found at pH 6.5. The saturation curves of scallop muscle mitochondria for pyruvate, glutamate and ADP were well described by the Michaelis-Menten equation. The affinity for pyruvate was greater at pH 6.4 (apparent K m, app=0.013 mM) than at pH 7.0 (K m, app=0.026 mM) while the affinity for ADP (K m, app=0.015 mM) and that for glutamate (K m, app=0.55 mM) changed little with pH. The ADP affinity was the same whether pyruvate or glutamate was the carbon substrate. The combination of maintenance of sensitivity to ADP with an enhanced affinity for pyruvate at acidic pH values should facilitate recuperation from bouts of glycolytic activity. Scallops harvested in September and those harvested in January differed in the maximal rates of glutamate and pyruvate oxidation.  相似文献

The proportions of elemental sulphur species in sediment from a contaminated area and a reference sediment sample were compared with the acute toxicity measured in short-term toxicity tests. Octameric elemental sulphur was separated into three operationally defined fractions. Here we show that octameric elemental sulphur contributes to the acute toxicity measured by bioluminescence inhibition. Our findings show that only a small part of extractable elemental sulphur was effective during exposure to the test organisms. A firmly bound fraction of sulphur was found in a contaminated sediment. This information has to be taken into account while interpreting the acute sediment toxicity.  相似文献
