Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) analyses of surface sediments from the Cross River estuary by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry indicated natural diagenetically derived PAHs in the upper estuary, with minor and variable amounts of petrogenic and combustion-derived PAHs from human activities (lower estuary). The occurrence of significant amounts of perylene (average 23% of all PAHs) with the diagenetic natural PAHs in the middle estuary bordered by mangrove forests supports its origin from terrestrial organic matter. The natural PAHs represent the highest percentage (average 76%) of the total PAHs in this tropical environment. The traditional geochemical parameters, including the petrogenic PAHs, confirmed trace petroleum contamination in the estuary. Specific PAH ratios such as Fl/Py and Fl/(Fl+Py) also support this source contribution.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the world's most significant environmental organic contaminants because of their carcinogenic properties. PAHs are widely distributed globally as a result of releases from numerous natural and anthropogenic activities. Consequently, several PAH monitoring studies have been conducted and remediation approaches explored. This article aims to provide the current status of PAH distribution in Nigeria's oil and gas industrial region in relation to the technologies adopted for PAH remediation. Ideally, the findings will provide insight into the challenges in managing organic contaminants derived from petroleum exploration activities in developing countries with Nigeria as a case study.  相似文献

Physicochemical properties, total metals and metal species were investigated in surface soil samples from six urban dumpsites within Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Results obtained indicated that Pb, Cd and Cr levels were higher in the dry season than in wet season, whereas Ni levels were higher during the wet season. Soil pH, organic matter and cation-exchange capacity (CEC) showed higher values in wet season than in dry season, whereas sand and clay levels were higher in the dry season. Speciation analysis showed the principal fraction of the metals to be Pb (reducible), Cd (acid extractable) and Ni (residual), whereas Cr existed in the residual fraction during the dry season and in the acid-extractable fraction during the wet season. Soil pH was positively correlated at p<0.1 with all metals in both seasons, sand was negatively correlated with the metals in both seasons, and CEC was negatively correlated with all metals in both seasons, except Pb in the wet season. Organic matter showed variable relationships with metals in both seasons. Seasonal variations affected metal availability and physicochemical properties of the soil. Total metal concentrations followed the order Pb>Ni>Cd>Cr, whereas their bioavailability followed the trend Cd>Pb>Cr>Ni.  相似文献
