Certain plants have demonstrated the capability to take up and accumulate metals, thus offering the potential to remediate metal-contaminated water and sediment. Several aquatic species have further been identified which can take up metal and metal oxide engineered nanoparticles (ENPs). It is important to evaluate if aquatic plants exhibiting potential for metal phytoremediation can be applied to remediation of metallic ENPs. Understanding the interactions between ENPs and aquatic plants, and evaluating possible influences on metal uptake and phytoremediation processes is therefore essential. This review article will address the feasibility of green plants for treatment of ENP-affected aquatic ecosystems. Discussion will include common types of ENPs in current use; transformations of ENPs in aquatic systems; the importance of microorganisms in supporting plant growth; ENP entry into the plant; the influence of microorganisms in promoting plant uptake; and recent findings in phytoremediation of ENP-affected water, including applications to constructed wetlands.  相似文献

Microbial respiration within a Fox sandy loam and a Blount silt loam was assessed after addition of acidic (pH 3.5) and alkaline (pH 12.2) fly ash (FoxAC, BlountAC, FoxAK and BlountAK, respectively). At the 20% alkaline ash rate, respiration was completely inhibited in the FoxAK and reduced by 97% in the BlountAK. In contrast, the 20% acidic ash rate reduced respiration in the FoxAC by 28% and in the BlountAC by 33%. Co-application of 5% composted sewage sludge to the ash-soil mixtures (FoxSSAC, BlountSSAC, FoxSSAK and BlountSSAK, respectively) improved respiration in both soils except for the 20% alkaline ash rate. Soil electrical conductivity, and concentrations of B, Mo, exchangeable Al and soluble anions were not closely associated with inhibition of respiration. In contrast, high pH appeared associated with decrease in respiration. Ecological Dose 50% (EcD(50)) values of the sewage-amended treatments were greater than for those of the non-sludge treatments for each sampling date as a result of the ameliorating properties of the sludge.  相似文献

Distribution of Pb, Cd and Ba in soils and plants of two contaminated sites   总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17
Evaluation of metal accumulation in soils and plants is of environmental importance due to their health effects on humans and other biota. Soil material and plant tissue were collected along transects in two heavily contaminated facilities, a Superfund site and a lead-acid battery dump, and analyzed for metal content. Soil lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and barium (Ba) concentrations for the Superfund site averaged 55,480, 8.5 and 132.3 mg/kg, respectively. Soil Pb occurred primarily in the carbonate, sulfide/residual and organic chemical fractions (41.6, 28.6 and 16.7%, respectively). Soil Pb, Cd and Ba concentrations for the dump site averaged 29,400, 3.9 and 1130 mg/kg, respectively. Soil Pb occurred mostly in the organic and carbonate fractions as 48.5 and 42.5%, respectively. Pb uptake in the two sites ranged from non-detectable (Agrostemma githago, Plantago rugelii, Alliaria officinalis shoots), to 1800 mg/kg (Agrostemma githago root). Cd uptake was maximal in Taraxacum officinale at 15.4 mg/kg (Superfund site). In the majority > or =65%) of the plants studied, root Pb and Cd content was higher than that for the shoots. Tissue Pb correlated slightly with exchangeable and soluble soil Pb; however, tissue Cd was poorly correlated with soil Cd species. None of the sampled plants accumulated measurable amounts of Ba. Those plants that removed most Pb and Cd were predominantly herbaceous species, some of which produce sufficient biomass to be practical for phytoremediation technologies. Growth chamber studies demonstrated the ability of T. officinale and Ambrosia artemisiifolia to successfully remove soil Pb and Cd during repeated croppings. Tissue Pb was correlated with exchangeable soil Pb at r(2)=0.68 in Ambrosia artemisiifolia.  相似文献

Climate change models consistently project future precipitation reduction and temperature increase during the crop growing season in the US Midwest, which may exacerbate surface water scarcity issues confronting regional agriculture. To maintain consistent crop yields under the risk of increased droughts, farmers may shift from rain-fed agriculture to irrigation agriculture, particularly during drought periods. There is an urgent need to understand whether surface water in the Midwest is suitable for irrigation. In this study, irrigation water quality was comprehensively analyzed for commonly used parameters regarding salt content including sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), adjusted sodium adsorption ratio (SARadj), soluble sodium percentage (SSP), electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), residual sodium bicarbonate (RSBC), magnesium adsorption ratio (MAR), permeability index (PI), Kelley’s ratio (KR), synthetic harmful coefficient (SHC), and salinity. Results indicate that water in the White River at Muncie was rated mostly in excellent to good condition with regard to irrigation quality. However, the irrigation suitability level exhibited two distinct patterns between May–July and August–October. Specifically, an average of 7.8% of the samples from May to July were unsuitable for irrigation, and an average of 24.5% of samples from August to October were unsuitable for irrigation considering all parameters. Flow rate change over time and the release of pollutants from wastewater treatment plants and combine sewage outflows to the White River impacted on the irrigation water quality variations of the river. This study showed that there are higher risks during the fall season for farmers to use surface water as an irrigation source, and this risk might be greater if extended or more frequent drought events occur in the future. To our best knowledge, this is the first peer-reviewed study on irrigation water quality assessment in the Midwest and provides useful information for farmers and decision makers to consider while formulating applications for irrigation.
