Community involvement has been identified as an important factor in the successful redevelopment of contaminated land, and access to technical resources has been a barrier for some communities. This paper describes how the US Environmental Protection Agency funded Technical Outreach Services to Communities programme was used to support four communities involved in land revitalization. The four New England case studies were used to retrospectively draw lessons learned that could be useful to others interested in similar community work. We suggest that the broad lessons point to four factors for success, namely, where there is: (1) a common vision in the community; (2) a cohesive community; (3) an opportunity for co-learning; and (4) a commitment among the parties for long-term engagement. We conclude that technical support can serve as a useful framework for developing trustful and long-term relationships with communities.  相似文献

The potential of alpine moss-sedge heath to recover from elevated nitrogen (N) deposition was assessed by transplanting Racomitrium lanuginosum shoots and vegetation turfs between 10 elevated N deposition sites (8.2-32.9 kg ha−1 yr−1) and a low N deposition site, Ben Wyvis (7.2 kg ha−1 yr−1). After two years, tissue N of Racomitrium shoots transplanted from higher N sites to Ben Wyvis only partially equilibrated to reduced N deposition whereas reciprocal transplants almost matched the tissue N of indigenous moss. Unexpectedly, moss shoot growth was stimulated at higher N deposition sites. However, moss depth and biomass increased in turfs transplanted to Ben Wyvis, apparently due to slower shoot turnover (suggested to result partly from decreased tissue C:N slowing decomposition), whilst abundance of vascular species declined. Racomitrium heath has the potential to recover from the impacts of N deposition; however, this is constrained by the persistence of enhanced moss tissue N contents.  相似文献

Nereid polychaetes (Nereis vexillosa and Platynereis bicanaliculata) attach pieces of drift algae to their tube surfaces. The presence of permanent algal cover increases the predictability of the food supply for at least the herbivores (including the nereids) and the deposit feeders, and modulates the temperature and salinity stresses of the marine intertidal soft-bottom environment. However, it may affect the access of organisms to the oxygenated water layers above the sediment surface. This is true for polychaetes that live head downwards in vertical tubes. It is suggested that the attachment behavior of the nereid polychaetes increases the ability of the plant to colonize habitats both temporally and spatially.  相似文献

This study investigated the occurrence and ontogenetic changes of halogenated secondary metabolites in planktotrophic and lecithotrophic larvae and adults of two common, infaunal polychaetes, Streblospio benedicti (Spionidae) and Capitella sp. I (Capitellidae), with different life-history traits. S. benedicti contains at least 11 chlorinated and brominated hydrocarbons (alkyl halides) while Capitella sp. I contains 3 brominated aromatic compounds. These halogenated metabolites are potential defense compounds benefiting both larvae and adults. We hypothesized that: (1) planktotrophic larvae contain halogenated metabolites because they are not protected by adult defenses, (2) quantitative and qualitative variation of planktotrophic larval halogenated metabolites parallels that of adults, and (3) brooded lecithotrophic larvae initiate the production of halogenated metabolites only after metamorphosis. To address these hypotheses, volatile halogenated compounds from polychaete extracts were separated using capillary gas chromatography and identified and quantified using mass spectrometry with selected ion monitoring. All four life stages (pre- and post-release larvae, new recruits, adults) of both S. benedicti and Capitella sp. I contained the halogenated metabolites previously identified from adults. This is the first report of halocompounds identified and quantified in polychaete larvae. Allocation of potential defense compounds to offspring varied as a function of species, feeding type and developmental stage. Pre-release larvae of S. benedicti with planktotrophic development contained the lowest concentration of total halogenated metabolites (1.75 ± 0.65 ng mm−3), post-release and new recruits contained intermediate concentrations (8.29 ± 1.72 and 4.73 ± 2.63 ng mm−3, respectively), and planktotrophic adults contained significantly greater amounts (28.9 ± 9.7 ng mm−3). This pattern of increasing concentrations with increasing stage of development suggests synthesis of metabolites during development. Lecithotrophic S. benedicti post-release larvae contained the greatest concentrations of halometabolites (71.1 ± 10.6 ng mm−3) of all S. benedicti life stages and developmental types examined, while the amount was significantly lower in new recruits (34.0 ± 15.4 ng mm−3). This pattern is consistent with a previously proposed hypothesis suggesting a strategy of reducing potential autotoxicity during developmental transitions. Pre-release lecithotrophic larvae of Capitella sp. I contained the highest concentration of total halogenated metabolites (1150 ± 681 ng mm−3), whereas the adults contained significantly lower total amounts (126 ± 68 ng mm−3). All concentrations of these haloaromatics are above those known to deter predation in previously conducted laboratory and field trials. As a means of conferring higher larval survivorship, lecithotrophic females of both species examined may be expending more energy on chemical defenses than their planktotrophic counterparts by supplying their lecithotrophic embryos with more of these compounds, their precursors, or with energy for their synthesis. This strategy appears common among marine lecithotrophic larval forms. Received: 14 July 1999 / Accepted: 20 January 2000  相似文献

The ability of ombrotrophic Sphagnum species to immobilise inorganic nitrogen deposited from the atmosphere was investigated in a series of simple lysimeter experiments. In an unpolluted mire, Sphagnum fuscum mats retained all the nitrogen deposited to them in natural precipitation events. Sphagnum capillifolium mats, transplanted from an unpolluted site to the polluted southern Pennines in England, also initially retained a large proportion of deposited nitrate and ammonium. However, a laboratory experiment demonstrated that high rates of nitrogen supply cause a loss of the ability of the moss to retain nitrate, which suggests that this may occur as a result of increased nitrogen deposition in polluted regions, resulting in increased nitrate availability in the peat. Investigation of the volume of precipitation and amounts of sulphate and chloride passing through the Sphagnum mats in the southern Pennines, as compared to that collected in adjacent bulk deposition gauges, showed that conventional deposition monitoring grossly underestimates rates of deposition to vegetation. Efficient trapping of occult and dry deposition by the moss led to much greater volumes of precipitation and amounts of sulphate and chloride being measured in throughflow than in bulk precipitation samples. Physiological response of S. fuscum to occult precipitation and heavy rainfall was investigated by measuring nitrate reductase activity induced in the moss by nitrate supplied in 'fine mist' and 'large droplet' applications of solutions to moss in the field. Greater response was shown to occult deposition, suggesting that this form of precipitation may be important in vegetation damage in polluted regions.  相似文献

High-latitude ecosystems store large amounts of carbon (C); however, the C storage of these ecosystems is under threat from both climate warming and increased levels of herbivory. In this study we examined the combined role of herbivores and climate warming as drivers of CO2 fluxes in two typical high-latitude habitats (mesic heath and wet meadow). We hypothesized that both herbivory and climate warming would reduce the C sink strength of Arctic tundra through their combined effects on plant biomass and gross ecosystem photosynthesis and on decomposition rates and the abiotic environment. To test this hypothesis we employed experimental warming (via International Tundra Experiment [ITEX] chambers) and grazing (via captive Barnacle Geese) in a three-year factorial field experiment. Ecosystem CO2 fluxes (net ecosystem exchange of CO2, ecosystem respiration, and gross ecosystem photosynthesis) were measured in all treatments at varying intensity over the three growing seasons to capture the impact of the treatments on a range of temporal scales (diurnal, seasonal, and interannual). Grazing and warming treatments had markedly different effects on CO2 fluxes in the two tundra habitats. Grazing caused a strong reduction in CO2 assimilation in the wet meadow, while warming reduced CO2 efflux from the mesic heath. Treatment effects on net ecosystem exchange largely derived from the modification of gross ecosystem photosynthesis rather than ecosystem respiration. In this study we have demonstrated that on the habitat scale, grazing by geese is a strong driver of net ecosystem exchange of CO2, with the potential to reduce the CO2 sink strength of Arctic ecosystems. Our results highlight that the large reduction in plant biomass due to goose grazing in the Arctic noted in several studies can alter the C balance of wet tundra ecosystems. We conclude that herbivory will modulate direct climate warming responses of Arctic tundra with implications for the ecosystem C balance; however, the magnitude and direction of the response will be habitat-specific.  相似文献

We describe an ecotoxicological model that simulates the sublethal and lethal effects of chronic, low-level, chemical exposure on birds wintering in agricultural landscapes. Previous models estimating the impact on wildlife of chemicals used in agro-ecosystems typically have not included the variety of pathways, including both dermal and oral, by which individuals are exposed. The present model contains four submodels simulating (1) foraging behavior of individual birds, (2) chemical applications to crops, (3) transfers of chemicals among soil, insects, and small mammals, and (4) transfers of chemicals to birds via ingestion and dermal exposure. We demonstrate use of the model by simulating the impacts of a variety of commonly used herbicides, insecticides, growth regulators, and defoliants on western burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) that winter in agricultural landscapes in southern Texas, United States. The model generated reasonable movement patterns for each chemical through soil, water, insects, and rodents, as well as into the owl via consumption and dermal absorption. Sensitivity analysis suggested model predictions were sensitive to uncertainty associated with estimates of chemical half-lives in birds, soil, and prey, sensitive to parameters associated with estimating dermal exposure, and relatively insensitive to uncertainty associated with details of chemical application procedures (timing of application, amount of drift). Nonetheless, the general trends in chemical accumulations and the relative impacts of the various chemicals were robust to these parameter changes. Simulation results suggested that insecticides posed a greater potential risk to owls of both sublethal and lethal effects than do herbicides, defoliants, and growth regulators under crop scenarios typical of southern Texas, and that use of multiple indicators, or endpoints provided a more accurate assessment of risk due to agricultural chemical exposure. The model should prove useful in helping prioritize the chemicals and transfer pathways targeted in future studies and also, as these new data become available, in assessing the relative danger to other birds of exposure to different types of agricultural chemicals.  相似文献

Snowbed vegetation is under threat from atmospheric pollution. Most of the late lying snowbeds in Britain are in the central highlands of Scotland, coinciding with an area of very high deposition of nitrogenous air pollutants. Snow is a very efficient scavenger of atmospheric pollution and, due to the dynamics of snowmelt, much of the pollution load of a snow pack is released at very high concentrations in episodes known as 'acid flushes'. This study demonstrates the existence of a positive relationship between duration of snow-lie and tissue nitrogen content of Kiaeria starkei, a bryophyte characteristic of late snowbeds. An increase in the tissue nitrogen content of this bryophyte over this century is also shown, reflecting increasing air pollution. Maximum tissue nitrogen concentration in K. starkei is up to 50% greater than that recorded in other upland bryophyte species, demonstrating the exceptional threat of pollution to snowbed bryophytes. This has implications for the critical loads approach to pollution emission controls, as it indicates that some mountain communities are receiving higher pollution loadings than previously realised and therefore current exceedence of critical loads is probably greater than recognised at present.  相似文献
