Effect of lead, mercury and cadmium on a sulphate-reducing bacterium   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A sulphate-reducing bacterial strain isolated from the south-west coast of India resembling Desulfosarcina in its physiology was tested for its behaviour towards HgCl(2), CdSO(4) and Pb(NO(3))(2). The order of toxicity to growth of these metal salts in a lactate-based medium at 50 microg ml(-1) concentrations was Cd>Pb>Hg and to respiration Pb>Cd>Hg. Inhibitory concentrations (viz. 100 microg ml(-1) of HgCl(2) and 200 microg ml(-1) of Pb(NO(3)(2)) had a stimulatory effect when the substrate was changed to acetate. With sodium acetate at 0.1% concentration, Hg and Pb had maximum stimulatory effect for growth and sulphide production. Experiments conducted directly with sediment slurries amended with lactate showed that all three metals (at levels below their inhibitory concentrations, i.e. 50 microg ml(-1) of metal salt for Cd and Hg and 100 microg ml(-1) for Pb) inhibited sulphate-reducing activity (SRA) with Pb decreasing the peak production by 68%. The order of toxicity in both lactate and acetate-amended slurry was Pb>Cd>Hg and Pb>Hg>Cd, respectively. With acetate, SRA in the presence of Cd and Hg was stimulated 110% and 27%, respectively. Pb inhibited SRA by 11%. There is a general reduction in the inhibition of sulphide production in slurries as compared with pure culture of the isolate.  相似文献

The performance of engine parameters is more influenced with fuel injection strategies namely start of main injection timing (SoMI). An experimental analysis was performed to find the optimum SoMI timing based on performance, emission, and combustion characteristics. Base fuel of diesel and neem biodiesel was used as test fuels. The neem biodiesel was prepared by esterification and transesterification process. It is found from literature that neem biodiesel blend NB20 with diesel gives optimum performance and emission characteristics; therefore, NB20 blend was used for experiments. A variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) compression ignition (CI) engine was used to conduct the experiments. Engine performance parameters were estimated and compared with a base fuel of diesel and with NB20 blends. In this experimentation, fuel injection pressure (FIP) of 800 bar and engine speed of 1700 rpm were considered. SoMI timing was varied from 2° to 10° bTDC with an increment of 2° bTDC timing. Cylinder pressure (CP) and heat release rate (HRR) were estimated and found that are higher for diesel fuel compared to NB20 blend at different SoMI timings. The addition of neem biodiesel NB20 blend to diesel fuel decreases the exhaust emissions except NOx emissions. The BSFC was considerably reduced and BTE was improved almost equivalent to the diesel fuel for NB20. From the results, it is concluded that 10° bTDC SoMI timing provides 13% improvement in BTE, 21% decrement in BSFC, and 7.5% reduction in CO2 emissions.

An efficient way of distributing water in urban cities is one of the major global challenges of our time. A Water Distribution Network (WDN) is a vital infrastructure, intended to provide fresh water to households within a city or designated boundary. Given the WDN’s complexity, effective numerical techniques are required to aid in the development of an ideal monitoring system. Flow meters and gate valves should be placed in low-connected areas of the WDN with water flow reaching several regions of the network. This study proposes a general strategy for assisting water utilities in making decisions for effective water supply. The aim of the research is to use weighted spectral clustering algorithms to outline water districts while addressing hydraulic restrictions via weighted adjacency and Laplacian matrices of the weighted network. This work aims to identify influenced nodes in the network based on Eigen centrality and effectively distribute water across those nodes. This project also looks at how to measure the network’s connection strength to avoid water leaks. The best clusters are found using Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors of weighted adjacency matrices and Laplacian matrices of the water network in the proposed graph spectral framework. In order to establish the optimum water network division approach, topological and graph metrics were used to compare multiple spectral clustering techniques. The proposed graph spectral approach is tested using a genuine water distribution network serving an urban area of Coimbatore city in India and offering a method for partitioning complex networks that employ the spectral graph partitioning algorithm.

A study was carried out in the Island and mainland regions of Ramanathapuram District to characterize the physico-chemical characteristics of 87 groundwater samples in Island and 112 groundwater samples in mainland which include pH, EC, TDS, salinity, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, magnesium hardness, total hardness, chloride and fluoride. Heavy inorganic load in majority of the groundwater samples has been estimated due to the salinity, TDS, TH and chloride beyond the threshold level which substantiates the percolation of sea water into the freshwater confined zones. Although the groundwater sources are available in plenty, the scarcity of potable water is most prevalent in this coastal area. The Water Quality Index (WQI) and Langeleir Saturation Index (LSI) have also been calculated to know the potable and corrosive/incrusting nature of the water samples. The statistical tools such as principal component analysis, box plots and correlation matrix have also been used to explain the influence of different physico-chemical parameters with respect to one another among the groundwater samples. The percentage of groundwater samples in mainland was more than that in Island with respect to the acceptable limit of WHO drinking standard, especially in TDS, CH, TH and chloride but the converse is observed in the case of fluoride. About 8 % of the mainland aquifers and 42 % of Island aquifers were identified to have fluoride greater than 1.5 mg/l. The signature of salt-water intrusion is observed from the ratio of Cl/CO 3 2? ?+?HCO3 and TA/TH. A proper management plan to cater potable water to the immediate needs of the people is to be envisaged.  相似文献

Arylsulfatase activity in marine sediments   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Arylsulfatase activity and arylsulfatase-producing bacteria were estimated in sediment samples collected from 3 different biotopes: marine, estuarine, and mangrove. No direct relationship could be established between activity and the number of bacteria at any station. In general, clayey sediments always harboured more arylsulfatase producers than sandy sediments, irrespective of salinity variations. Of the 3 biotopes investigated, the mangrove area exhibited maximum activity. The enzyme showed two pH optima, one at 6.2, the other at 9.0. The optimum substrate concentration was 12x10-4M. Higher substrate concentrations tended to inhibit arylsulfatase activity. The recovery of added phenolphthalein was maximum only at pH 6.2; KCN, Na2So4, and KH2Po4 inhibited enzyme activity by 65.5, 46.8 and 37.5%, respectively. More than one type of arylsulfatase may be present in marine sediments; further studies on the role of arylsulfatases are required, since arylsulfatases have been reported to bear on the formation and hardening of exoskeletons in marine forms.  相似文献

The occurrence and distribution of a special group of bacteria, capable of dissolving insoluble phosphates, were studied in marine environments, especially in sediments. The phosphatase activity was also investigated. Clayey sediments contained more phosphate solubilizing bacteria and phosphatase than sandy sediments. There was a positive correlation between the total phosphate content and the phosphatase activity. The phosphatase activity was recorded in all samples, irrespective of salinity variations. Predatory efficiency of Diplonychus rusticus (Fabricius) was recorded at different prey density with different salinity ranges. When the salinity level (ppt) was increased, the predation rate of the bug decreased. Fifth nymphal stage showed higher predation in the 2, 4 and 6 ppt levels of salinityin both 1 hr and 24 hr period of exposure at prey densities 50, 100, 150 and 200. At prey density 150, adult bugs killed more prey in the 2 ppt level of salinity in both lhr and 24 hr treatments.  相似文献
