The aim of this study was to investigate the potential mutagenic activity of diesel engine exhaust in the Ames/Salmonella assay using a direct aerosol exposure system. So, TA 98 and TA 100 strains, with or without added S9 mix, were exposed to diesel emissions after varying degrees of filtration. Variants of these two strains, deficient in nitroreductase (TA 98NR and TA 100NR) or over-expressing O-Acetyl Transferase (YG 1024 and YG 1029), were also exposed to total (unfiltered) diesel exhaust to highlight the putative mutagenicity of any nitro-PAHs present in these emissions. Mutagenic activity of the diesel exhaust was demonstrated on Salmonella typhimurium, strains TA 100 and variants TA 100 NR and YG1029. The use of a particle filter did not modify the genotoxicity of the diesel emissions, indicating a major contribution of the gas phase to the mutagenicity of these diesel emissions. The prominent role of the particulate-associated nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) claimed by some authors working on diesel exhaust organic extracts was not confirmed by our results with native diesel exhaust exposure. Environmental change in the Sudan-Sahel region of West Africa (SSWA) has been much debated since the droughts of the 1970s. In this article we assess climate variability and environmental stress in the region. Households in Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Nigeria were asked about climatic changes and their perceptions were compared across north–south and west–east rainfall gradients. More than 80% of all households found that rainfall had decreased, especially in the wettest areas. Increases in wind speeds and temperature were perceived by an overall 60–80% of households. Contrary to household perceptions, observed rainfall patterns showed an increasing trend over the past 20 years. However, August rainfall declined, and could therefore potentially explain the contrasting negative household perceptions of rainfall trends. Most households reported degradation of soils, water resources, vegetation, and fauna, but more so in the 500–900 mm zones. Adaptation measures to counter environmental degradation included use of manure, reforestation, soil and water conservation, and protection of fauna and vegetation. The results raise concerns for future environmental management in the region, especially in the 500–900 mm zones and the western part of SSWA. 相似文献

The study highlights the potential of the black-chinned tilapia to be used as a sentinel to assess environmental contaminants based on the use of a set of biomarkers. The usefulness of fish species as sentinels for assessing aquatic environment contamination was tested using a set of biomarkers in Senegalese environments characterized by multi-pollution sources. The black-chinned tilapia (Sarotherodon melanotheron) was selected as a sentinel because of its abundance, wide distribution in all coastal aquatic ecosystems and physiological properties. The potential influence of confounding factors such as salinity on biomarker in the tilapia has been examined. Individuals were sampled during two seasons (dry and wet) in eight sites characterized by various degrees of anthropogenic contamination and different salinities (from 0 to 102?psu). Biomarkers??including growth rate (GR), condition factor (CF), biotransformation enzymes such as 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST), lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE)??were measured. Chemical contaminant [polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs)] levels showed different sources of contamination with relatively high concentrations of PAHs in the Hann Bay and Foundiougne locations. The most sensitive biomarker present in different sites according to the principal component analysis is EROD. Few variations of the AChE activity and TBARS levels were found. No clear relationship was found between biomarker responses and salinity, but GR and CF were lower in hypersaline conditions. Tilapia is responsive to environmental contaminants such as PAHs, OCPs and PCBs. The S. melanotheron multiparametric approach showed a better discrimination of sites. 相似文献

Farmers’ Perceptions of Climate Change and Agricultural Adaptation Strategies in Rural Sahel 总被引:17,自引:3,他引:14
Farmers in the Sahel have always been facing climatic variability at intra- and inter-annual and decadal time scales. While
coping and adaptation strategies have traditionally included crop diversification, mobility, livelihood diversification, and
migration, singling out climate as a direct driver of changes is not so simple. Using focus group interviews and a household
survey, this study analyzes the perceptions of climate change and the strategies for coping and adaptation by sedentary farmers
in the savanna zone of central Senegal. Households are aware of climate variability and identify wind and occasional excess
rainfall as the most destructive climate factors. Households attribute poor livestock health, reduced crop yields and a range
of other problems to climate factors, especially wind. However, when questions on land use and livelihood change are not asked
directly in a climate context, households and groups assign economic, political, and social rather than climate factors as
the main reasons for change. It is concluded that the communities studied have a high awareness of climate issues, but climatic
narratives are likely to influence responses when questions mention climate. Change in land use and livelihood strategies
is driven by adaptation to a range of factors of which climate appears not to be the most important. Implications for policy-making
on agricultural and economic development will be to focus on providing flexible options rather than specific solutions to

Soil respiration is one of the main CO2 sources from terrestrial ecosystems. Soil respiration is therefore a major source of greenhouse gas. Knowledge of the impact of agronomic practices such as manuring on the stability, for example resistance and resilience, of heterotrophic C–CO2 respiration to disturbance is scarce. Here, we studied the stability of soil microbial heterotrophic respiration of two tropical soils from plots annually enriched or not with manure applications during more than 20 years. Stability was quantified after heating soils artificially. We hypothesized that field manuring would change the stability of the microbial community. Additionally, the impact of both manured and unmanured soils to addition of an organic cocktail was assessed under controlled conditions in order to discriminate the metabolic capacity of the microbial community, and to link the metabolic capacity up with the microbial heterotrophic soil respiration. Our results show that total respiration was not significantly different in manured and unmanured pots. Moreover, contrary to our hypothesis, manure amendment did not affect the stability (resistance, resilience) of the microbial abundance or the basal metabolism, in our experimental conditions. By contrast, the diversity of the bacterial community in heated soils was different from that in unheated soils. After heating, surviving microorganisms showed different carbon utilization efficiency, manuring stimulating the growth of different resistant communities, that is, r-strategist or K-strategist. Microbial community of manured soils developed in the presence of the organic cocktail was less resistant to heating than microbial community of unmanured plots. 相似文献

The invasion of Salvinia molesta in the Lower Senegal River Delta in Mauritania and Senegal in 1999 posed a serious threat to the socioeconomic conditions of the local people as well as to wetland biodiversity. Eventually, an effective biological control of S. molesta was obtained by means of the weevil Cyrtobagous salviniae, which was introduced in the river in Senegal and Mauritania in May 2000 and in Senegal in April 2001. In October 2001, it became apparent that the weevils were doing a magnificent job. The color of the plants was turning from green to dark-brown or black, and subsequently the plants started to sink to the bottom. Detailed monitoring of the dispersal of C. salviniae in November-December 2001 confirmed the visual observations of the outcome of biological control. In April 2002, it could be concluded that S. molesta was no longer a problem in the Senegal River. 相似文献
