The 'Campo de Gibraltar' region is a very industrialized area where very few air pollution studies have been carried out. Up to date, no model has been developed in order to predict air pollutant levels in the different towns spread in the region. Carbon monoxide (CO), Sulphur dioxide (SO(2)) and suspended particulate matter (SPM) series have been investigated (years 1999-2000-2001). Multilayer perceptron models (MLPs) with backpropagation learning rule have been used. A resampling strategy with two-fold crossvalidation allowed the statistical comparison of the different models considered in this study. Artificial neural networks (ANN) models were compared with Persistence and ARIMA models and also with models based on standard Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) over test sets with data that had not been used in the training stage. The models based on ANNs showed better capability of generalization than those based on MLR. The designed procedure of random resampling permits an adequate and robust multiple comparison of the tested models. Principal component analysis (PCA) is used to reduce the dimensionality of data and to transform exogenous variables into significant and independent components. Short-term predictions were better than medium-term predictions in the case of CO and SO(2) series. Conversely, medium-term predictions were better in the case of SPM concentrations. The predictions are significantly promising (e.g., d (SPM 24-ahead) = 0.906, d (CO 1-ahead) = 0.891, d (SO2 1-ahead) = 0.851).  相似文献

An elemental composition study of atmospheric aerosols from the City of Colima, in the Western Coast of Mexico, is presented. Samples of PM(15)-PM(2.5) and PM(2.5) were collected with Stacked Filter Units (SFU) of the Davis design, in urban and rural sites, the latter located between the City of Colima and the Volcán de Colima, an active volcano. Elemental analyses were carried out using Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE). The gravimetric mass concentrations for the fine fraction were slightly higher in the urban site, while the mean concentrations in the coarse fraction were equal within the uncertainties. High Cl contents were determined in the coarse fraction, a fact also observed in emissions from the Volcán de Colima by other authors. In addition to average elemental concentrations, cluster analysis based on elemental contents was performed, with wind speed and direction data, showing that there is an industrial contributor to aerosols North of the urban area. Moreover, a contribution from the volcanic emissions was identified from the grouping of S, Cl, Cu, and Zn, elements associated to particles emitted by the Volcán de Colima.  相似文献

The Disaster Deficit Index (DDI) measures macroeconomic and financial risk in a country according to possible catastrophic scenario events. Extreme disasters can generate financial deficit due to sudden and elevated need of resources to restore affected inventories. The DDI captures the relationship between the economic loss that a country could experience when a catastrophic event occurs and the availability of funds to address the situation. The proposed model utilises the procedures of the insurance industry in establishing probable losses, based on critical impacts during a given period of exposure; for economic resilience, the model allows one to calculate the country's financial ability to cope with a critical impact. There are limitations and costs associated with access to resources that one must consider as feasible values according to the country's macroeconomic and financial conditions. This paper presents the DDI model and the results of its application to 19 countries of the Americas and aims to guide governmental decision‐making in disaster risk reduction.  相似文献

Young green turtles (Chelonia mydas) spend their early lives as oceanic omnivores with a prevalence of animal prey. Once they settle into neritic habitats (recruitment), they are thought to shift rapidly to an herbivorous diet, as revealed by studies in the Greater Caribbean. However, the precise timing of the ontogenic dietary shift and the actual relevance of animal prey in the diet of neritic green turtles are poorly known elsewhere. Stable isotopes of carbon, sulfur and nitrogen in the carapace scutes of 19 green turtles from Mauritania (NW Africa), ranging from 26 to 102 cm in curved carapace length (CCLmin), were analyzed to test the hypothesis of a rapid dietary shift after recruitment. Although the length of residence time in neritic habitats increased with turtle length, as revealed by a significant correlation between turtle length and the δ13C and the δ34S of the scutes, comparison of the δ15N of the innermost and outermost layers of carapace scutes demonstrated that consumption of macrophytes did not always start immediately after recruitment, and turtles often resumed an animal-based diet after starting to graze on seagrasses. As a consequence, seagrass consumption did not increase gradually with turtle size and animal prey largely contributed to the diet of turtles within the range 29–59 cm CCLmin (76–99% of assimilated nutrients). Seagrass consumption by turtles larger than 59 cm CCLmin was higher, but they still relied largely on animal prey (53–76% of assimilated nutrients). Thus, throughout most of their neritic juvenile life, green turtles from NW Africa would be better classified as omnivores rather than herbivores. The results of the photocatalytic and photosensitized degradations of the monoazo dye AO20 in aqueous solution using suspended titanium dioxide are presented. Kinetic and mechanistic details have been elucidated using UV/Vis, FTIR and TCO techniques. It was proven that adsorption of dye molecules onto the support material is essential for the processes to be effective. Moreover, even if their mechanisms differ during the early stages, photocatalysis and photosensitization lead to very similar ultimate breakdown products. Indeed, the original dye anchored to the oxide surface systematically undergoes fast decomposition until it is transformed into CO2 or aliphatic acids (formic, acetic, oxalic acids), which react rather slowly with hydroxyl radicals or trapped holes.  相似文献

Abstract

This article compiles and analyzes information on the interaction of both ground-level ultraviolet radiation and anthropogenic ozone in the extremely polluted atmosphere of Mexico City. Simultaneous anthropogenic ozone and global flux (sun and sky) measurements were recorded in near ultraviolet radiation (295-385 nm) for a 30-month period (March 1990 to August 1992). Results reveal that under clear sky conditions, high concentrations of ozone (and presumably of other pollutants) impede UV-fluxes from reaching their maximum values. Furthermore, heavy cloud cover causes ozone concentrations to reach their minimum values together with UV-minimum fluxes. Seasonal variation in UV-irradiance is also discussed. Findings indicate that maximum UV-fluxes occur in spring and summer and that minimum values occur in autumn and winter. Significant daily local reductions in UV-fluxes (up to 50%) during afternoon hours in Mexico City can be attributed to air pollution. Finally, the growing incidence of rickets in children residing in the Mexico City metropolitan area may be related both to dietary deficiencies and to the UV-flux depletion on the ground.  相似文献
