The opacity and emission performance of two “identical” cold-side precipitators at a power plant utilizing a Western coal source was investigated through an extensive test program. The test program included establishment of outlet emission versus opacity correlations for the two “identical” units, correlation of rapper strategy (frequency and amplitude) with opacity, and correlation of power-off rapping strategy with opacity. Analysis of the test program data demonstrates that the opacity-emission correlations from the two “identical” units can be significantly different. The potential reasons for the differences between the two units are identified and examined in light of the test program data. Strong correlation of opacity with rapping strategy was developed from the test program. Results demonstrate that an automatic power-off rapping technique can significantly enhance precipitator performance on ash from Western coal.  相似文献

The spatial and temporal distributions of two island-associated copepod species, Undinula vulgaris Dana and Labidocera madurae Scott, were compared to the distributions of two open ocean species, Cosmocalanus darwinii Lubbock and Scolecithrix danae Lubbock, along 28-km windward and leeward transects off the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Samples were taken in September and December 1985 and April and June 1986. A warm, low salinity pool on the leeward side was a prominent feature during all transects except December. The abundances of the two oceanic species did not change significantly between leeward and windward stations, with distance from shore, or between September 1985 and April 1986 samples. As expected, very high abundances of U. vulgaris occurred at some nearshore stations, up to 3 g dry wt m−2 for adults alone. Calculations of respiratory loss at these densities (0.7 g C m−2 d−1) suggest a high local productivity would be required to meet these demands. L. madurae, a surface-dwelling species normally restricted to within 1 km of shore, was an effective indicator species of nearshore water movement. It was more common in offshore samples on the leeward transects, rarely being found offshore on the windward side, consistent with prevailing currents and the presence of the leeward warm, low salinity pool. The occurrence of a strong mixing event in April 1986 resulted in L. madurae being distributed throughout the upper 100 m of the water column. The presence of oceanic species close to shore on the windward side also coincided with this wind-driven event. The primary environmental influence on vertical distributions was daytime cloud cover, with U. vulgaris tending to be found shallower on cloudy days. Of the two oceanic species, S. danae exhibited the most pronounced vertical migration, however, vertical distributions were not significantly correlated with environmental factors for either species. The abundant nearshore U. vulgaris population cannot be explained by differences in vertical distribution between it and the two oceanic species that might allow a physical mechanism to concentrate U. vulgaris. A high population growth rate is likely necessary to explain U. vulgaris' dominance. Received: 26 June 1998 / Accepted: 31 March 1999  相似文献

Streams, as low-lying points in the landscape, are strongly influenced by the stormwaters, pollutants, and warming that characterize catchment urbanization. River restoration projects are an increasingly popular method for mitigating urban insults. Despite the growing frequency and high expense of urban stream restoration projects, very few projects have been evaluated to determine whether they can successfully enhance habitat structure or support the stream biota characteristic of reference sites. We compared the physical and biological structure of four urban degraded, four urban restored, and four forested streams in the Piedmont region of North Carolina to quantify the ability of reach-scale stream restoration to restore physical and biological structure to urban streams and to examine the assumption that providing habitat is sufficient for biological recovery. To be successful at mitigating urban impacts, the habitat structure and biological communities found in restored streams should be more similar to forested reference sites than to their urban degraded counterparts. For every measured reach- and patch-scale attribute, we found that restored streams were indistinguishable from their degraded urban stream counterparts. Forested streams were shallower, had greater habitat complexity and median sediment size, and contained less-tolerant communities with higher sensitive taxa richness than streams in either urban category. Because heavy machinery is used to regrade and reconfigure restored channels, restored streams had less canopy cover than either forested or urban streams. Channel habitat complexity and watershed impervious surface cover (ISC) were the best predictors of sensitive taxa richness and biotic index at the reach and catchment scale, respectively. Macroinvertebrate communities in restored channels were compositionally similar to the communities in urban degraded channels, and both were dissimilar to communities in forested streams. The macroinvertebrate communities of both restored and urban degraded streams were correlated with environmental variables characteristic of degraded urban systems. Our study suggests that reach-scale restoration is not successfully mitigating for the factors causing physical and biological degradation.  相似文献

Short-term changes in feeding and digestion by the copepodCalanus pacificus   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The planktonic marine copepodCalanus pacificus exhibits an enhanced feeding rate, or hunger response, when exposed to food following short periods of starvation. In a scries of laboratory experiments with copepods collected from the main basin of Puget Sound, Washington, during 1982 and 1984, we measured maximum ingestion rate, assimilation efficiency, and digestive enzyme activity to determine the time scales over which the feeding behavior ofC. pacificus responds to increases in food. These laboratory results were then compared to field studies of diel fluctuations in digestive enzymes and gut fluorescence ofC. pacificus in Dabod Bay, a fjord of Puget Sound, during September, 1980, and the closely relatedC. marshallae off the Washington coast, in August, 1981. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that the hunger response ofC. pacificus lasts approximately 6 h before ingestion rate returns to a steady state level of about one-half maximum. On the order of 12h of starvation were required to induce the maximum ingestion rate of the hunger response. Digestive enzyme activities did not change over these time scales. Assimilation efficiency peaked within a few hours of the onset of feeding, with low initial rates possibly related to the period of starvation prior to feeding. These results were consistent with diel patterns observed in the field. The hunger response ofC. pacificus appears to be controlled by processes within the gut, and our results are discussed in relation to recent studies of the digestive processes of calanoid copepods.Contribution No. 1772 from the School of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington 98195, USA  相似文献

The long-term stability of Hg in coal combustion by-products (CCBs) was evaluated at ambient and near-ambient temperatures. Six CCB samples with atypically high levels of total Hg were selected for study assuming a greater potential for release of measurable amounts of Hg vapor. The samples selected included two fly ash samples from U.S. eastern bituminous coal, two fly ash samples from South African low-rank coal, one fly ash from Powder River Basin (PRB) subbituminous coal blended with petroleum coke, and one PRB subbituminous coal fly ash incorporated with flue gas desulfurization material. Air scrubbed of Hg was passed through compacted 100-g aliquots of each sample at 1 mL/min and vented to a gold-coated quartz trap to collect released Hg vapor. The samples were maintained at ambient and near-ambient (37 degrees C) temperatures. All samples released low-picogram levels of Hg after 90 days. No pattern was evident to link the total Hg content to the rate of release of Hg vapor. An average of 0.030 pg Hg/g CCB/day was released from the samples, which equates to 2.2 x 10(-8) lb Hg/ton CCB/year. If this were applied to a coal-fired power plant production of 200,000 tons of fly ash per year, there would be a maximum potential release of 0.0044 lb, or 2.00 g, of Hg per year. Experiments are continuing to determine long-term vapor release of Hg from CCBs. All samples have been set up in duplicate at ambient temperature with an improved apparatus to reevaluate results reported in this article.  相似文献

The duct injection retrofit process for flue gas cleanup of sulfur dioxide emissions has been demonstrated at several sites in the United States through a series of U.S. Department of Energy research projects. As a subcontractor on one of the projects, the University of North Dakota Energy & Environmental Research Center performed a comprehensive characterization of four residues from three demonstration sites. The characterization task objective was to facilitate understanding of materials handling and to identify potential disposal and utilization options for these high-volume coal utilization solid residues. Characterization included evaluation of the physical and engineering properties, chemical composition, mineralogy, and leaching potential. Chemical characterization results provided interesting and valuable information from the standpoint of the bulk chemistry and phase assemblages, as well as potential environmental issues associated with the use or disposal of these materials. Results of the chemical and mineralogical characterizations indicate that duct injection residues will be suitable for specific utilization applications and that disposal of these residues should be similar to many conventional coal combustion residues. Significant mineralogical phase changes were noted in long-term leaching experiments.  相似文献

Abstract

The long-term stability of Hg in coal combustion byproducts (CCBs) was evaluated at ambient and near-ambient temperatures.

The samples were maintained at ambient and near-ambient (37 °C) temperatures. All samples released low-picogram levels of Hg after 90 days. Morphometric measurements of the gut cells of the marine calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa were made over a 24 h diel cycle to test the hypothesis that feeding rhythms in this copepod are limited by the cycles of blishter-like cells (B-cells) in the gut. Copepods were collected from Long Island Sound, New York, USA, in June 1991. Experimental treatments included low (1 g chlorophyll al-1) and high (10 g chlorophyll al-1) food concentrations. Copepods were fixed and embedded in Epon at six time intervals over the 24 h period, and semi-thin sections through the length of Midgut Zone II were analyzed for gut-cell area and vacuole area, with area measurements integrated to yield estimates of gut-cell volume and vacuole volume. Concurrent measurements of gut fluorescence, a measure of gut fullness, and digestive enzyme activities also were made. A diel cycle in gut fluorescence was observed, most notably in the low-food treatment, which exhibited a 3-fold increase in gut pigments. There was little consistent change in digestive enzyme activities over this time span. Gaps in the gut wall indicative of spent B-cells were observed in 17 of 39 copepods, with no trend over time or food treatment. Generally, only a single gap was seen in any one copepod. B-cells were vacuolated throughout the 24 h period. Morphometric analyses revealed a correlation between gut fluorescence and both maximum vacuole area and vacuole volume, as well as percent vacuolated cell volume, in the low-food treatment. The high-food treatment, which had a relatively smaller increase in gut fluorescence (1.5-fold) during the night cycle, showed no significant increase in vacuole size. B-cells appear to have a life-cycle greater than the diel feeding period, and while B-cell vacuoles respond to the ingested food during the diel cycle, production of B-cells does not appear to be a limiting factor in A. tonsa's feeding cycle.  相似文献

We investigated physiological traits associated with a reproductive-resting stage in adult female harpacticoid copepods, Coullana canadensis (Willey). Our hypothesis was this stage represents a life-history strategy that could increase fitness by improving winter survivorship and future reproductive success in spring. To test if physiological rates are suppressed in this stage, we compared gut-cell morphology, nitrogen excretion rates, enzyme activities, and phytoplankton grazing rates of reproductive-resting and reproductive females reared in the laboratory under high food conditions. Copepods came from laboratory cultures originating from individuals collected in Maine and Maryland, USA in 1990. Reproductive-resting females had lower physiological rates, and the surface area of gut-cells was reduced compared to reproductive females. Distinct morphological differences in the distribution of lipids between reproductive and reproductive-resting females were observed under light and electron microscopy, the latter having a diffuse accumulation of lipid in the area normally occupied by the ovaries. Differences in lipid composition were also found. Reproductive copepods had a significantly higher ratio (%) of polar lipids to total lipid, and a lower proportion of triacylglycerols compared to reproductive-resting copepods. These laboratory findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the reproductive-resting stage in C. canadensis is an adaptive response to increase winter survival. ABSTRACT: The conspicuous shifts in summertime values of common measures of water qualify that have persisted for 10 years (1993 to 2002) in the Seneca River, New York, as a result of the zebra mussel invasion are documented. Resolution of patterns in time and space is supported by water quality monitoring that extends back to the late 1970s. Patterns are evaluated to describe the stability of impacts and quantify metabolic activity of the invader. The water quality impacts that have persisted unabated for 10 years since the invasion are the most severe documented for a river in North America. Changes in summer median conditions since the invasion include: (1) a 16‐fold decrease in chlorophyll concentration (Chi), (2) a 2.5‐fold increase in Secchi disc transparency, (3) a 17‐fold increase in soluble reactive phosphorus concentration, (4) a 3.7‐fold increase in total ammonia concentration, (5) a greater than 25 percent decrease in dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, and (6) a decrease in pH of 0.55 units. The strength of these signatures has been driven by anthropogenic influences that include upstream nutrient loading and morphometric modifications of the river, and the functioning of Cross Lake, through which the river flows. This hypereutrophic lake sustains dense zebra mussel populations and related water quality impacts in the river downstream of the lake outflow by acting as a source of veligers and suitable food for this bivalve. Evidence is presented that levels of metabolic activity of the zebra mussel in this river have been resource limited, manifested through increased consumption of Chl and DO with increased delivery of these constituents in the lake's outflow.  相似文献
