The effectiveness of environmental protection measures is based on the early identification and diagnosis of anthropogenic pressures. Similarly, restoration actions require precise monitoring of changes in the ecological quality of ecosystems, in order to highlight their effectiveness. Monitoring the ecological quality relies on bioindicators, which are organisms revealing the pressures exerted on the environment through the composition of their communities. Their implementation, based on the morphological identification of species, is expensive because it requires time and experts in taxonomy. Recent genomic tools should provide access to reliable and high-throughput environmental monitoring by directly inferring the composition of bioindicators’ communities from their DNA (metabarcoding). The French-Swiss program SYNAQUA (INTERREG France-Switzerland 2017–2019) proposes to use and validate the tools of environmental genomic for biomonitoring and aims ultimately at their implementation in the regulatory bio-surveillance. SYNAQUA will test the metabarcoding approach focusing on two bioindicators, diatoms, and aquatic oligochaetes, which are used in freshwater biomonitoring in France and Switzerland. To go towards the renewal of current biomonitoring practices, SYNAQUA will (1) bring together different actors: scientists, environmental managers, consulting firms, and biotechnological companies, (2) apply this approach on a large scale to demonstrate its relevance, (3) propose robust and reliable tools, and (4) raise public awareness and train the various actors likely to use these new tools. Biomonitoring approaches based on such environmental genomic tools should address the European need for reliable, higher-throughput monitoring to improve the protection of aquatic environments under multiple pressures, guide their restoration, and follow their evolution.  相似文献

We are experimentally studying, by means of short-pulse injection, the transport and deposition kinetics of suspended particles (silts of the order of 10 microm) in a highly permeable medium consisting of a column of gravel. In our experiments, the breakthrough curves (BTCs) are well described by analytical solutions of a convection/dispersion model with first-order deposition kinetics. All the transport parameters calculated by the model for both particles and dissolved tracer depend on the flow rate. We demonstrate the existence of a critical flow rate, determined experimentally, beyond which the transfer time for the particles is longer than that for the tracer. This phenomenon is unusual in comparison with the results available in the literature. The increase in transfer time of particles in comparison to tracer leads us to assume a purely mechanical phenomenon, that is, collision between particles and grains of the medium with instantaneous reset in motion when the flow rate is sufficient to avoid settling. Thanks to the polydispersivity of the injected suspension and the control of grain size at the outlet, it can also be determined that the coarser particles are recovered before the finer particles, as expected when one considers the size-exclusion effect.  相似文献

To study the nocturnal feeding of euphausiids during vertical migrations and its impact on the phytoplankton, a phytoplankton-rich water mass (drogue marked) drifting over a dense krill scattering layer (acoustic 104kHz) in the lower St. Lawrence estuary was monitored over 46 h in July 1982. Phytoplankton >20 m was abundant and mostly concentrated at the bottom of the photic layer above the pycnocline. Less than 42% of the particulate carbon was due to phytoplankton. The krill scattering layer was about 2 to 3 km in width, elongated along the 100-m bathymetric contour, and absent when the bottom was shallower than 50 m. Its upper day depth was 50 m. At deeper depths, its vertical distribution frequently changed from unimodal to polymodal shapes and viceversa, often with large concentrations of zooplankton just above the bottom. Typical vertical migrations were observed on both days. At night the scattering layer had a lower scattering strength. Most of it was below the thermocline but net catches showed that large concentrations of euphausiids (up to 57 individuals m-3) crossed it. Stomach pigment content of Thysanoessa raschi was generally low, but mean stomach fullness was always high. They were more opportunistic than herbivorous. From stomach fullness and the presence of a food bolus in mouth parts, feeding in surface waters appeared to be intensive, but gut content indicated that food was not processed there. It is therefore suggested that individuals underwent vertical interchanges across the thermocline while feeding during the night. Meganyctiphanes norvegica had significant herbivorous activity during the night. A previously reported dry ashing procedure for the decomposition of marine samples prior to arsenic determination is demonstrated to be equally applicable to the analysis of selenium. Quantitative recovery of selenium as inorganic or organic compounds in a variety of plants and animal tissues is demonstrated using 75Se tracer and X-ray fluorescence techniques. The dry ashing procedure is simpler than the official AOAC method, which uses a mixture of H2SO4, HNO3 and HC10(4).  相似文献

We report two cases in the same family of progressive neuronal degeneration of childhood—Alpers syndrome—with prenatal MRI findings in one case. The first infant presented at birth with severe microcephaly, then rapidly evolved to progressive encephalopathy with refractory epilepsy, leading to death at 10 months. Biochemical investigations including liver function tests were normal. CT and MRI showed severe diffuse brain atrophy. The diagnosis of progressive neuronal degeneration of childhood was made on the clinical and imaging data. The second pregnancy was marked by gradual decrease of fetal cerebral biometry and a prenatal MRI performed at 32 weeks showed diffuse cortical atrophy, as observed in the sibling. Understanding how ecosystems store or release carbon is one of ecology's greatest challenges in the 21st century. Organic matter covers a large range of chemical structures and qualities, and it is classically represented by pools of different recalcitrance to degradation. The interaction effects of these pools on carbon cycling are still poorly understood and are most often ignored in global-change models. Soil scientists have shown that inputs of labile organic matter frequently tend to increase, and often double, the mineralization of the more recalcitrant organic matter. The recent revival of interest for this phenomenon, named the priming effect, did not cross the frontiers of the disciplines. In particular, the priming effect phenomenon has been almost totally ignored by the scientific communities studying marine and continental aquatic ecosystems. Here we gather several arguments, experimental results, and field observations that strongly support the hypothesis that the priming effect is a general phenomenon that occurs in various terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. For example, the increase in recalcitrant organic matter mineralization rate in the presence of labile organic matter ranged from 10% to 500% in six studies on organic matter degradation in aquatid ecosystems. Consequently, the recalcitrant organic matter mineralization rate may largely depend on labile organic matter availability, influencing the CO2 emissions of both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. We suggest that (1) recalcitrant organic matter may largely contribute to the CO2 emissions of aquatic ecosystems through the priming effect, and (2) priming effect intensity may be modified by global changes, interacting with eutrophication processes and atmospheric CO2 increases. Finally, we argue that the priming effect acts substantially in the carbon and nutrient cycles in all ecosystems. We outline exciting avenues for research, which could provide new insights on the responses of ecosystems to anthropogenic perturbations and their feedbacks to climatic changes.  相似文献

Sediments of Baie des Anglais on the St. Lawrence estuary have a history of environmental contamination, but little information exists regarding their toxicity. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of contaminated Baie des Anglais sediments on American plaice (Hippoglossoides platessoides) immune function. Three sites in Baie des Anglais were selected which vary in proximity to local industries and in their sediment contaminant load. Sites 1 and 2 (within the bay) are the closest to shore and most heavily contaminated while sediments at Site 3, which is outside the bay, are the least contaminated. In the first experiment, American plaice were placed in cages at each site for three weeks and immune function was assessed by measuring the phagocytic activity of pronephric macrophages. At the time of sampling, plaice displayed pronephros cell immune response disturbances indicating that Site 1 and 2 were most toxic and Site 3 the least toxic. The results obtained for phagocytosis revealed that contaminants present in the sediments are bioavailable to fish, which came in contact with them and significantly affected their immune system. In the second experiment, sediments from the most toxic site, Site 1, were collected for a laboratory controlled experiment in which plaice were exposed for up to 3 months to these contaminated marine sediments, while the control group was exposed to relatively uncontaminated beach sand. At the end of the exposure period, plaice were transferred from contaminated sediment to beach sand and sampled one month later in order to determine if immune function had returned to control levels. The total number of macrophages decreased following three months of exposure, while the active macrophages had already decreased after the first month of exposure. Following the rehabilitation period a significant trend toward normal response was noted. Sediments from Baie des Anglais contain primarily less highly chlorinated PCBs and lower concentrations of the intermediate and highly chlorinated PCBs. The total concentration of PCBs (sum of 20 congeners) in the contaminated sediments was 1500 ng/g while in the beach sand, the levels were 13.6 ng/g dry weight. Only the low chlorinated PCB congeners were efficiently transferred from the sediments to the plaice liver. Together, these results suggest that the effect of chemical exposure on the phagocytosis of plaice macrophages may be reversible if the fish are returned to a non-contaminated habitat.  相似文献

In order to assess the temporal variability of living zooplankton in a tidal estuary, the ATP content and dry weight of mixed zooplankton populations (mainly copepods) were measured during a period of 175 h at an anchor station in the Upper St. Lawrence Estuary. Vertical tows were made every 30 min. Hourly vertical profiles of the current speed and direction, temperature and salinity were also obtained during the experiment. A strong tidal influence was found in all series. Maxima and minima of the ATP content (living biomass) and the dry weight (total biomass) were correlated with low and high water slacks. The serial autocorrelation and cross-correlation showed, in both series a 12 to 13-h cycle, and the ATP:dry weight ratio showed a significant 24-h cycle. The cross-correlation with the Kendall τ was used to detect the relationship between biological components and physical indices (stratification and Ri). It is suggested that the proportion of living zooplankton biomass in the Upper St. Lawrence Estuary is most likely the result of a combination of diurnal migration and longitudinal advection.  相似文献
