In the crystalline rocks of the Canadian Shield, geochemical conditions are currently reducing at depths of 500-1000 m. However, during future glacial periods, altered hydrologic conditions could potentially result in enhanced recharge of glacial melt water containing a relatively high concentration of dissolved oxygen (O2). It is therefore of interest to investigate the physical and geochemical processes, including naturally-occurring redox reactions, that may control O2 ingress. In this study, the reactive transport code MIN3P is used in combination with 2k factorial analyses to identify the most important parameters controlling oxygen migration and attenuation in fractured crystalline rocks. Scenarios considered are based on simplified conceptual models that include a single vertical fracture, or a fracture zone, contained within a rock matrix that extends from the ground surface to a depth of 500 m. Consistent with field observations, Fe(II)-bearing minerals are present in the fractures (i.e. chlorite) and the rock matrix (biotite and small quantities of pyrite). For the parameter ranges investigated, results indicate that for the single fracture case, the most influential factors controlling dissolved O2 ingress are flow velocity in the fracture, fracture aperture, and the biotite reaction rate in the rock matrix. The most important parameters for the fracture zone simulations are flow velocity in the individual fractures, pO2 in the recharge water, biotite reaction rate, and to a lesser degree the abundance and reactivity of chlorite in the fracture zone, and the fracture zone width. These parameters should therefore receive increased consideration during site characterization, and in the formulation of site-specific models intended to predict O2 behavior in crystalline rocks.  相似文献

The softshell clam, Mya arenaria, is a commercially important bivalve with wide latitudinal distribution in North America. Populations of clams with a history of repeated exposure to toxic Alexandrium spp. have developed a natural resistance to the paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) produced by these algae. An association between PST resistance in individual clams and a single mutation in the saxitoxin (STX) binding region of the α-subunit of the voltage-gated sodium (Na+) channel gene was previously identified. Here we establish that more than one mutation associated with nerve resistance to STX occurred at this locus. Both cDNA from mRNA and genomic DNA sequences from individual clams are identical demonstrating that both alleles are expressed simultaneously. In addition, one resistant allele per individual is sufficient to confer neural resistance to STX even though heterozygous individuals show an intermediate level of resistance to STX in in vitro nerve trunk assays.  相似文献

Picoplanktonic brown tides of Aureococcus anophagefferens have had devastating effects on production of commercially exploited bivalve populations in shallow, mid-Atlantic estuaries in the United States. The toxin produced by this alga has not been chemically characterized. This study develops a bioassay using juvenile mussels, Mytilus edulis, based on the inhibitory effect of brown tide on bivalve suspension-feeding, to compare the cellular toxicity of three Long Island, New York, clonal isolates of A. anophagefferens. Two recent (1995) isolates (CCMP 1707 and 1708) from Peconic Bay proved highly toxic and caused greater than 100-fold reduction in clearance rates (CR) of juvenile mussels in unialgal and mixed suspensions with a nutritious alga, Isochrysis galbana (clone T-iso), relative to controls. A third 1986 isolate from Great South Bay (CCMP 1784) showed no detectable toxicity in 24-h trials, and may have lost its initial potency over more than a decade of laboratory culture. Identification of a non-toxic strain provides a useful tool for future research. Cultures of the toxic isolate CCMP 1708 in late-stationary growth phase were significantly more toxic than those in early-exponential phase. The threshold concentration of toxic A. anophagefferens cells that inhibits clearance on co-occurring phytoplankton species was determined for juvenile (10-mm) hard clams, Mercenaria mercenaria. Relatively low concentrations (⣃᎒3 to 50᎒3 cells ml-1) of isolate CCMP 1708 were sufficient to sharply reduce clam CR of I. galbana. Calculations based on these results suggest that, at peak historical densities of M. mercenaria in Great South Bay, removal of A. anophagefferens at low cell densities by suspension-feeding benthos could provide an effective top-down grazing control mechanism to prevent the initiation of brown tide in shallow, inner bays.  相似文献

Occupational exposure to benzene was measured in two gasoline marketing terminals and five major refineries in Singapore. A total of 280 workers were monitored over two years. This assessment was carried out with two primary objectives: (1) To find out the extent of occupational exposure to benzene in the petroleum industry in Singapore, (2) To identify suitable biomarkers for monitoring of low levels of benzene exposure. The exposure was measured in five different categories of petroleum and petrochemical workers, i.e., truck drivers, despatch assistant, process operators, oil movements operators and laboratory technicians. The results revealed wide variations in exposure, from 0.01 to 13.6 ppm for personal time weighted average (TWA) exposure over the whole workshift. The exposure of truck drivers appeared to be the highest, with geometric mean (GM) of 1.98 ppm (ranged from 0.25 to 13.6 ppm). The average benzene exposure for process operators was relative low with a GM of 0.04 ppm. Lowest benzene exposure was found in the laboratory technicians, with a GM of 0.02 ppm. As cigarette smoking is known to affect metabolism of benzene, data analyses on the relationships with environmental exposure were conducted only on the 190 nonsmokers. The results showed that urinary trans, trans-muconic acid (ttMA), unmetabolized benzene in urine (UBZ) and benzene in blood (BBZ) were better biomarkers for low level benzene exposure as compared to urinary phenolic metabolites in urine, such as hydroquinone, phenol and catechol.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: This paper examines the relationship between both potential (E*) and nonpotential evapotranspiration and equilibrium evapotranspiration (EQ) in an irrigated wheat field in southcentral Alberta, Canada. The control exercised by surface wetness and root reservoir moisture content in determining the value of the Priestley-Taylor constant a is explored. Also investigated is the relationship between a and the vapor flux fraction ET/(R-G) where ET is the actual evapotranspiration, R the net radiation, and G the soil heat flux. It is shown that evapotranspiration occurred at the potential rate (E*) when the available soil moisture (ASM) within the root zone was ≥3 percent. a varied from 0.84 for a dry soil to 1.49 for a saturated soil. The mean a for E* was 1.24. Surface wetness sustained evapotranspiration at the potential rate when such wetting exceeded 2mm d?1 following a period of prolonged drawdown of soil moisture, α and ET/(R-G) were positively correlated and this correlation strengthened with increasing soil moisture for constant values of the energy partitioning factor s+γ/s where s is the slope of the saturation humidity-temperature curve and γ is the psychrometric constant. ET=EQ when ETI(R-G) lay within the range of 0.59 to 0.82 corresponding to Bowen ratio (β) values of 0.22 and 0.69, respectively.  相似文献

One of the most common methods to dispose of domestic wastewater involves the release of septic effluent from drains located in the unsaturated zone. Nitrogen from such systems is currently of concern because of nitrate contamination of drinking water supplies and eutrophication of coastal waters. The objectives of this study are to develop and assess the performance of a mechanistic flow and reactive transport model which couples the most relevant physical, geochemical and biochemical processes involved in wastewater plume evolution in sandy aquifers. The numerical model solves for variably saturated groundwater flow and reactive transport of multiple carbon- and nitrogen-containing species in a three-dimensional porous medium. The reactive transport equations are solved using the Strang splitting method which is shown to be accurate for Monod and first- and second-order kinetic reactions, and two to four times more efficient than sequential iterative splitting. The reaction system is formulated as a fully kinetic chemistry problem, which allows for the use of several special-purpose ordinary differential equation (ODE) solvers. For reaction systems containing both fast and slow kinetic reactions, such as the combined nitrogen-carbon system, it is found that a specialized stiff explicit solver fails to obtain a solution. An implicit solver is more robust and its computational performance is improved by scaling of the fastest reaction rates. The model is used to simulate wastewater migration in a 1-m-long unsaturated column and the results show significant oxidation of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), the generation of nitrate by nitrification, and a slight decrease in pH.  相似文献

A multicomponent reactive transport model as presented by MacQuarrie and Sudicky [MacQuarrie, K.T.B., Sudicky, E.A., this volume. Multicomponent simulation of wastewater-derived nitrogen and carbon in shallow unconfined aquifers: I. Model formulation and performance, J. Contam. Hydrol.] is applied to a well-studied wastewater plume in a sandy aquifer near Cambridge, Ontario. Domestic wastewater is released into the unsaturated zone via a drain field at a depth of about 0.8 m. The physical transport parameters for the model are obtained by simulating a non-reactive solute, while kinetic input data for the nitrogen and carbon reaction network are obtained from the literature. The model shows that the wastewater-loading rate has little influence on the moisture content in the unsaturated zone, thus oxygen diffusion in the air phase is an important transport mechanism. The model results are in general agreement with the field-determined moisture and oxygen profiles near the drain field. The simulation results show that oxidation of ammonium and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) goes to completion in the 1.5-m distance between the drain field and the water table, and that calcite dissolution limits the pH reduction to about 0.2 units. The model-predicted nitrate concentrations in the core of the plume are in the range of 20-25 mg N/l and are in good agreement with the field data. Overall, the results for the major reactive species from the model simulation agree well with the geochemical data obtained below the drain field and it is concluded that the major physical and biochemical processes have been correctly captured in the current model formulation.  相似文献

To circumvent some of the previous limitations associated with contaminant-monitoring programs, we tested the suitability of the water strider (Hemiptera: Gerridae) as a mercury sentinel by comparing total mercury concentrations in water striders and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) from a variety of stream sites in New Brunswick, Canada. There was a strong association between the two variables across sites (r(2)=0.81, P<0.001) in systems where both atmospheric deposition and a point source (an abandoned gold mine) were likely contributing to ambient mercury levels. In a small stream draining the gold mine tailings pile, water striders had mercury concentrations an order of magnitude higher than those from reference locations. Temporal variation at three southern New Brunswick stream sites was non-significant. These results suggest that water strider mercury levels accurately quantify food chain entry of the element. The use of sentinel species holds great potential for expanding contaminant-monitoring programs.  相似文献

Nitrogen from such systems is currently of concern because of nitrate contamination of drinking water supplies and eutrophication of coastal waters. It has been proposed that adding labile carbon sources to septic distribution fields could enhance heterotrophic denitrification and thus reduce nitrate concentrations in shallow groundwater. In this study, a numerical model which solves for variably saturated flow and reactive transport of multiple species is employed to investigate the performance of a drain field design that incorporates a fine-grained denitrification layer. The hydrogeological scenario simulated is an unconfined sand aquifer. The model results suggest that the denitrification layer, supplemented with labile organic carbon, may be an effective means to eliminate nitrogen loading to shallow groundwater. It is also shown that in noncalcareous aquifers, the denitrification reaction may provide sufficient buffering capacity to maintain near neutral pH conditions beneath and down gradient of the drain field. Leaching of excess dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the denitrification layer is problematic, and causes an anaerobic plume to develop in simulations where the water table is less than 5-6 m below ground surface; this anaerobic plume may lead to other down gradient changes in groundwater quality. A drain field and denitrification layer of smaller dimensions is shown to be just as effective for reducing nitrate, but has the benefit of reducing the excess DOC leached from the layer. This configuration will minimize the impact of wastewater disposal in areas where the water table is as shallow as 3.5 m.  相似文献
