This study used several real-time and filter-based aerosol instruments to measure PM2.5 levels in a high-rise residential green building in the Northeastern US and compared performance of those instruments. PM2.5 24-hr average concentrations were determined using a Personal Modular Impactor (PMI) with 2.5 µm cut (SKC Inc., Eighty Four, PA) and a direct reading pDR-1500 (Thermo Scientific, Franklin, MA) as well as its filter. 1-hr average PM2.5 concentrations were measured in the same apartments with an Aerotrak Optical Particle Counter (OPC) (model 8220, TSI, Inc., Shoreview, MN) and a DustTrak DRX mass monitor (model 8534, TSI, Inc., Shoreview, MN). OPC and DRX measurements were compared with concurrent 1-hr mass concentration from the pDR-1500. The pDR-1500 direct reading showed approximately 40% higher particle mass concentration compared to its own filter (n = 41), and 25% higher PM2.5 mass concentration compared to the PMI2.5 filter. The pDR-1500 direct reading and PMI2.5 in non-smoking homes (self-reported) were not significantly different (n = 10, R2 = 0.937), while the difference between measurements for smoking homes was 44% (n = 31, R2 = 0.773). Both OPC and DRX data had substantial and significant systematic and proportional biases compared with pDR-1500 readings. However, these methods were highly correlated: R2 = 0.936 for OPC versus pDR-1500 reading and R2 = 0.863 for DRX versus pDR-1500 reading. The data suggest that accuracy of aerosol mass concentrations from direct-reading instruments in indoor environments depends on the instrument, and that correction factors can be used to reduce biases of these real-time monitors in residential green buildings with similar aerosol properties.

Implications: This study used several real-time and filter-based aerosol instruments to measure PM2.5 levels in a high-rise residential green building in the northeastern United States and compared performance of those instruments. The data show that while the use of real-time monitors is convenient for measurement of airborne PM at short time scales, the accuracy of those monitors depends on a particular instrument. Bias correction factors identified in this paper could provide guidance for other studies using direct-reading instruments to measure PM concentrations.  相似文献

Abstract

The United States Environmental Protection Agency administers several laws and progrms through which it reviews the hazard potential of pesticides and other toxic substances which may present a risk to human health or the environment. The Agency's ability to assess hazard as required by law depends in part on test data developed through testing standards in Agency regulations. In reviewing the Agency's actions in this regard, the courts emphasize the importance of reasoned regulatory decisions. The legal requirements to assess risk and provide reasoned decisions in this regard establish the legal importance of testing guidelines and test data, and indicate that sound test methodology is as important legally as it is scientifically.  相似文献

Crude molluscan lipase was prepared by homogenizing in tris buffer either fresh or lyophilized crystalline styles of Spisula solidissima. Both preparations showed specific activities less than 2% of standard hog pancreatic lipase, and pH and temperature optima of 8.0 and 20°C, respectively. When compared with mammalian hog pancreatic lipase, the clam lipase was found to be the more versatile enzyme on primary wax esters as well as methyl esters. Neither lipase was capable of hydrolyzing the oleate or palmitate esters of the secondary alcohols of glycerol, cholesterol or isopropyl alcohol; however, both showed activity on the oleate ester of isobutyl alcohol, a primary alcohol. S. solidissima lipase, hog pancreatic lipase, and a lipase isolated from the pancreas of the skate Raja erinacea, all demonstrated an inability to hydrolyze the methyl esters of eicosatetraenoic, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids. The lipase-resistant polyunsaturated fatty acid esters are discussed in terms of their role in the lipid biochemistry of marine organisms.  相似文献

Glycerol has been traditionally viewed as the main form of carbon translocated from zooxanthellae to the coelenterate host. Most of this glycerol was postulated to be used by the coelenterate host for lipid synthesis. Recent work suggests that large amounts of photosynthetically fixed carbon is synthesized into lipid in the algae, and then translocated as lipid droplets to the host. These two hypotheses of carbon translocation are not mutually exclusive, but to reconcile them the role of glycerol must be reevaluated. In this study the short term metabolic fate of uniformly labelled 14C-glycerol, 14C-bicarbonate, and 14C-acetate was examined in zooxanthellae and coelenterate host tissue isolated from Condylactis gigantea tentacles. When host and algal triglycerides, synthesized during 90-min light and dark incubations in 14C-bicarbonate and 14C-acetate, were deacylated, more than 80% of the activity was found in the fatty acid moiety. In contrast, triglycerides isolated from zooxanthellae and coelenterate host tissue incubated in 14C-glycerol in the dark for 90 min were found to have more than 95% of their radioactivity in the glycerol moiety. During the 90-min 14C-glycerol incubations in the light, the percentage of radioactivity in the fatty acid moiety of zooxanthellae triglycerides increased to 37%. The percentage of radioactivity in the host tissue triglycerides fatty acid moiety stayed below 5% during the 90-min 14C-glycerol incubations in the light. These results show that neither the zooxanthellae nor the host can rapidly convert glycerol to fatty acid. Radioactivity from 14C-glycerol, which does eventually appear in host lipid, may have been respired to 14CO2, then photosynthetically fixed by the zooxanthellae and synthesized into lipid fatty acid.  相似文献

Survival and reproduction are the two primary life‐history traits essential for species’ persistence; however, the environmental conditions that support each of these traits may not be the same. Despite this, reproductive requirements are seldom considered when estimating species’ potential distributions. We sought to examine potentially limiting environmental factors influencing the distribution of an oviparous reptile of conservation concern with respect to the species’ survival and reproduction and to assess the implications of the species’ predicted climatic constraints on current conservation practices. We used ecological niche modeling to predict the probability of environmental suitability for the alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii). We built an annual climate model to examine survival and a nesting climate model to examine reproduction. We combined incubation temperature requirements, products of modeled soil temperature data, and our estimated distributions to determine whether embryonic development constrained the northern distribution of the species. Low annual precipitation constrained the western distribution of alligator snapping turtles, whereas the northern distribution was constrained by thermal requirements during embryonic development. Only a portion of the geographic range predicted to have a high probability of suitability for alligator snapping turtle survival was estimated to be capable of supporting successful embryonic development. Historic occurrence records suggest adult alligator snapping turtles can survive in regions with colder climes than those associated with consistent and successful production of offspring. Estimated egg‐incubation requirements indicated that current reintroductions at the northern edge of the species’ range are within reproductively viable environmental conditions. Our results highlight the importance of considering survival and reproduction when estimating species’ ecological niches, implicating conservation plans, and benefits of incorporating physiological data when evaluating species’ distributions.  相似文献

We describe a method for the determination of long-lived tin isotopes arising from nuclear fission. The isotopes are extracted from sediments with hydrochloric acid and separated by methylisobutylketone extraction, ion-exchange chromatography, precipitation of cesium hexachlorostannate and ferric hydroxide coprecipitation. The 100 000-year 126Sn was not detected but beta activity consistent with 121mSn (55 year) was found in sediment samples from a location known to be contaminated with fission products.  相似文献

Building codes and standards are enforceable by law, but are recognized as a minimum design basis relative to fire safety. The same system that mandates these codes does not, in a court of law, judge solely by the codes. In civil litigation involving death and injury from a building fire, the jury must evaluate the design based not only on the codes but also on what is reasonable. This paper will examine the civil trial and its impact on engineers, architects involved in building design, and manufacturers who supply materials and products for such buildings. Actual case histories will be cited and recommendations for a greater information feedback from trials to practicing designers and manufacturers will be presented.  相似文献
