Seasonal distribution of physico-chemical characteristics such as rainfall, pH, salinity, temperature, light extinction coefficient, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand and nutrients like total phosphorus, inorganic phosphate, nitrite, nitrate and reactive silicate has been studied at two stations of Uppanar estuary in relation to effluent discharges from SIPCOT industries. There are 44 industries discharges their effluents into Uppanar estuary, which may influence the biota. Nutrient concentrations were higher during monsoon season and low during summer season. The mean concentrations of nutrients were high at station 1 than station 2 due to discharges from industries, coconut husk retting grounds near the station 1. In the present study, the physico-chemical characteristic of Uppanar estuary carried out and variations are discussed.  相似文献

The ever-increasing attention to the environmental impact of leather industry has necessitated the development of enzyme-based processes as potent alternatives to pollution causing chemicals. In this study, a hair saving process is developed for dehairing of skins and hides using a bacterial alkaline protease preparation, completely eliminating the use of lime and sulfide. To evaluate the efficacy of the enzymatic process, comparative studies have been carried out with two controls; a conventional lime-sulfide process and enzyme-assisted process using commercial dehairing enzyme with reduced quantities of lime and sulfide. The developed process requires a shorter duration of 6h for complete dehairing of skins and hides than control groups and also, it avoids the use of silicate carriers since the enzymatic dehairing is carried out by dip method. Histological and scanning electron microscopic analyses of the dehaired pelts obtained from enzymatic process reveal complete removal of hair and epidermis with moderate opening up of fiber structure in both dermis and corium. Moreover, the collagen is not damaged and resulting in a leather of good quality. The developed process has resulted in a remarkable reduction of effluent load in terms of biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solids and total suspended solids. Physicochemical studies conclusively show that the leathers produced by enzymatic process are equivalent to or better than that obtained by control systems. Thus, the developed enzymatic process offers immense potential for greener mode of dehairing of skins and hides in leather industry coupled with environmental excellence.  相似文献

The concentrations of copper in water and sediment samples of Cuddalore coastal area, Tamil Nadu, India were examined. The isolation, characterization, screening, and metal sorption capabilities of copper-resistant bacteria (CURB) also were investigated. Biosorption capabilities and growth time varied among the resistant isolates. All isolates reduced more than 80% of copper from copper-treated broth. However, Bacillus cereus CURB-4 strain absorbed more copper ions (99.9%) than other resistant isolates. Changes in structural group position and synthesis of extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) of CURB-4 strain under copper stress and controlled conditions also were examined. Under copper stress condition, CURB-4 produced more EPS (71 ± 0.6%) compared to control conditions (66 ± 0.4%). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the changes in functional group position of EPS were observed in stressed condition. Overall, synthesis of EPS in bacteria is a protective barrier against environmental stress.  相似文献

In the presented work, the effect of crosslinker geometry on the properties of PVA is reported. The aliphatic (suberic) and aromatic (terephthalic) dicarboxylic acids are used as crosslinker molecules. On the basis of tensile test and thermal properties, it is observed that crosslinking of PVA by suberic acid is more effective than terephthalic acid. The maximum strength measured in crosslinked samples is 32.5 MPa for suberic acid crosslinked PVA which is higher than that of neat PVA (22.6 MPa). Swelling study shows that 8 h crosslinked terephthalic acid (35% w/w) samples have a minimum of 5.4% of water uptake compared to neat PVA, which dissolves readily in water. DTGA shows that the decomposition temperature of crosslinked PVA is 345?°C while neat PVA has a decomposition temperature of 315?°C. FTIR spectroscopy confirms the formation of crosslink ester bond in crosslinked PVA. The crosslinked samples kept for bio-degradation show maximum degradation in terephthalic acid (15% w/w) crosslinked PVA.  相似文献

Bioremediation has become an important method for the restoration of oil-polluted environments by the use of indigenous or selected microbial flora. Several factors such as aeration, use of inorganic nutrients or fertilizers and the type of microbial species play a major role in the remediation of oil-contaminated sites. Experiments were undertaken for bioremediation of oil sludge-contaminated soil in the presence of a bacterial consortium, inorganic nutrients, compost and a bulking agent (wheat bran). Experiments were conducted in glass troughs for the 90-day period. Bulked soil showed more rapid degradation of oil compared to all other amendments. During the experimental period, wheat bran-amended soil showed 76% hydrocarbon removal compared to 66% in the case of inorganic nutrients-amended soil. A corresponding increase in the number of bacterial populations was also noticed. Addition of the bacterial consortium in different amendments significantly enhanced the removal of oil from the petroleum sludge from different treatment units.  相似文献

Developing countries across the world have embraced the policy of high economic growth as a means to reduce poverty. This economic growth largely based on industrial output is fast degrading the ecosystems, jeopardizing their long term sustainability. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has long been recognized as a tool which can help in protecting the ecosystems and aid sustainable development. The Screening guidelines for EIA reflect the level of commitment the nation displays towards tightening its environmental protection system. The paper analyses the screening process for EIA in India and dissects the rationale behind the exclusions and thresholds set in the screening process. The screening process in India is compared with that of the European Union with the aim of understanding the extent of deviations from a screening approach in the context of better economic development. It is found that the Indian system excludes many activities from the purview of screening itself when compared to the EU. The constraints responsible for these exclusions are discussed and the shortcomings of the current command and control system of environmental management in India are also explained. It is suggested that an ecosystem carrying capacity based management system can provide significant inputs to enhance the effectiveness of EIA process from screening to monitoring.  相似文献

The heavy metal concentrations in water and sediment samples were investigated in the tropical Muthupet mangrove ecosystem, southeast coast of India. The results demonstrated that, ranges of metals in water comprise of Cd—0.05 to 3.72; Cu—0.5 to 4.43; Pb—6.31 to 17.87; Zn—0.0 to12.91 ppm and sediment comprises of Cd—0.06 to 0.57; Cu—4.46 to 20.59; Pb—2.90 to 21.35; Zn—4.41 to 39.18 ppm. In all the three sites, heavy metals in sediment exhibited significant higher concentrations compared to water, except Cd. The spatial distribution of metals in water and sediment samples followed a similar pattern except Cd with the preponderance of Zn (75% of total metals) followed by Cu and Pb. Muller’s Geoaccumulation indexes (Igeo) showed Cd is a potent pollutant in the ecosystem and moderately contaminated the study area. The aquaculture and agricultural culture practices follow improper disposal of municipal wastages, and idol immersion activities are the potent metallic sources for heavy metal pollution were identified by performing principle component analysis. In order to protect the ecosystem from further contamination, regular monitoring is needed to in order to control the anthropogenic discharges.

The present study describes the preparation and characterization of leather particulate-polymer composites (LPPCs) from solid wastes (chrome shavings/buffing dusts) generated during leather manufacturing processes. Nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and neoprene rubber were the polymers used at different concentrations. Pretreatment of leather wastes with suitable alkaline reagents enhances the binding efficiency with polymers chosen and the high interfacial bonding prevailing reduces the chromium leaching. Mechanical properties of the resultant polymer composites showed good machinable and nailing properties. Addition of poly vinyl chloride (PVC) further enhances the above said properties. Scanning electron micrograph analyses implies complete blending of components in LPPCs. The composites exhibit good machinable and nailing properties and are easily transformed to shoe heel, shoe sole and shoe last.  相似文献
